There is not much information about those early settlements, but historians have learned a bit about the Co Loa citadel, which sat on the site of Hanoi somewhere around 200 BC. 8. Today Hanoi is rather unique because it serves as a melting pot for Chinese, French, and Russian architecture. 9. A major expansion that happened in 2009 actually quadrupled the size of the city and doubled the size of the population there. The expansion was made to accommodate the large amounts of traffic in the downtown area. 11. Probably the most popular place to visit in Hanoi is Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, which sits on Ba Dinh Square, which was where Ho Chi Minh officially declared Vietnam's independence from Japan at the end of World War II. 12. The mausoleum houses Ho Chi Minh's body and serves as a shrine to him. 13. Surrounding the mausoleum is an impressive garden where visitors can see an unusual collection of bonsais and other donated plants from all over the country. Throughout the years, Hanoi has changed names several times. When the Chinese ruled Vietnam, the city's name was Long Bien. It was changed to Dong Binh during this time, then Long Do, and finally Dai La Citadel in 866. Dai La became the capital city of Vietnam in 1010 when the first emperor of the Ly Dynasty moved it there. According to folklore, he saw a dragon coming up the Red River there, so he changed the name again to Thang Long, which means "rising dragon" in English. In 1397 the capital was moved away from the area. When the French colonized Vietnam, they moved the capital city back to the site in 1887. This was when the name was finally changed to Hanoi. Subsequently each street has been named after the specific product, which was produced and sold here. Even to this day, this area retains the !essence of life from centuries. From here we continue on to visit Ho Chi Minh; Mausoleum, a large memorial to the Vietnamese leader. Ho Chi Minh’s body is preserved here and the mausoleum is open for people to come and pay their respects. The mausoleum’s design is similar to Lenin’s mausoleum in Moscow. Rows of visitors can be seen on any given day. It is said that Ho Chi Minh stated in his will that he wished to be cremated and to have his ashes buried in the hills of the north, center, and south of Vietnam.
