The new gigantic Beijing airport in and of itself is a site to see. The newly constructed highway from the airport to downtown made the crowds manageable for the 2008 Olympics. Our friend, Mayor Han of Beijing will ar- range government sponsored facilities tours with po- lice escorts to view all the Olympic sites. We will tour the Bird Cage and the huge Olympic Hall housing the models of all the con- struction. It will take more than a full day to visit the newly con- structed Olympic sites when they are empty. We have so many friends in Beijing who want us to see them that this is a city where we could spend 14 days. WENDENG :: DAYS 3 & 4 Wendeng is located at the eastern tip of Shandong peninsula. Its land area is 1,645 square kilometers and the coastal line is 156 kilometers. Besides, Wendeng is located in the connection of Qingdao (this is the home of the famous Chinese beer of the same name), Yantai and Weihai. Bordering the sea and surrounded by boundless mountains, Wendeng faces to the Republic of Korea and Japan across the Yellow sea. From your hotel window in Wendeng you can see Korea. It has the most hot spring spas in China both in- door and out door. It will be a memory maker here in “SPA City”. This city will visit the USA in March and you will have a chance to meet these government officials. We will stay at the Kunlyu Hotel in Wendeng . 6 YOUR DESTINATIONS FUZHOU :: DAYS 5 & 6 Fuzhou is the home of manufacturers of shoes, and textiles and electronic products. It faces Taiwan and has a ferry service and fre- quent exchanges between these two countries. It is a great place to shop as prices are the best in China and they do not receive the Americans who travel to Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Bei- jing. Fou-Tcheou; also seen as Foochow, Fuchow, Fuh-chau or Hokchew in earlier Western documents is the capital and the largest prefecture- level city of Fujian (福建) province, People's Republic of China. It is also referred to as Rongcheng (榕城) which means "city of banyan trees." It is the capital of the province, and is situated on the north bank of the estu- ary of Fujian's largest river, the Min River, which gives access to the interior and to the neighboring provinces of Jiangxi and Zhejiang.

    About Saigon – Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City is the largest and most dynamic city in Vietnam. It has changed names several times in history. While sources dispute between Vietnamese, Cambodian who controlled the land originally, the name later on was changed to Saigon (Sài Gòn in Vietnamese) in the 1700s by the local Vietnamese, then to Saigon by the French. The most recent change to Ho Chi Minh City came in 1976 after the collapsed of Saigon regime and the country became Reunification. Today, Ho Chi Minh City has an official population of eight to nine million, but in fact the population could be closer to twelve. The city center area (such as district 1, 3), still referred to as Saigon, the whole Ho Chi Minh City is growing at a rate that will equal Tokyo by 2020. Ho Chi Minh City is closed to the equator and has a tropical climate with an average humidity of 75%. Different with Hanoi with four distinctive seasons, in Ho Chi Minh City there are two seasons: wet and dry (sometimes say hot and hotter). If you visit Ho Chi Minh, be prepared for downpours during the wet season and expect daily showers from June to November. The rain does not last long but it could be pouring rain. Ho Chi Minh City life reflects much as the weather: a blend of harmony & chaos. Traffic of the city is heavy and dense, but we can always see locals lounging at street side coffee vendors, content to admire the passing free-for-all.

    CHAPTER ONE Hanoi's Long Century STEIN TéNNESSON The Vietnam War was ``the quintessential conflict in the long history of warfare in our century,'' says Gabriel Kolko, who thinks it was ``virtually preordained'' that the USA would try to attain a vital military success to compensate for its failures in Korea and Cuba. He concedes, though, that ``it was mainly chance that designated Vietnam as the primary arena of trial'' (Kolko, 1994, pp. 419, 436±7). Eric Hobsbawm, the great British narrator of modern history, thinks differently. He finds it ``almost impossible to understand'' why the USA came to embroil itself in ``a doomed war'' (Hobsbawm, 1994, p. 244). Although the two of them differ, they also have some- thing in common: the notion of a short and tragic century. Hobsbawm has even sub- titled his book ``The short twentieth century, 1914±1991.'' Kolko and Hobsbawm's century was full of suffering and lacked a meaningful direction, starting as it did when lights went out in Europe, and ending in bewilderment. ``Darkness'' is Hobsbawm's last word, and Kolko's final sentence reads: ``. a dark night of despair will overcome our world'' (Kolko, 1997, p. 168). From an Asian perspective the twentieth century was long and progressive. The Chinese started their century in 1842, with the Opium War and the loss of Hong Kong, and approached the year 2000 as an almost unified nation enjoying rapid economic growth. The long Vietnamese century began sadly with the French seizure of Saigon in 1859, followed by the ``loss of country'' in the years up to 1884.
