I believe that this is because the Buddha’s basic approach was to prescribe a different treatment for every spiritual ailment, much as a doctor prescribes a different medicine for every medical ailment. Thus his teachings were always appro priate for the particular suffering individual and for the time at which the teaching was given, and over the ages not one of his prescriptions has failed to relieve the suffering to which it was addressed. Ever since the Buddha’s Great Demise over twenty-five hundred years ago, his message of wisdom and compassion has spread throughout the world. -

The Therīgāthā, an anthology of 73 poems found in the Pali canon, is an example of such an asseveration, composed by theris (women elders of wisdom or senior disciples), some of the first Buddhist nuns who lived in the time of the Buddha 2500 years ago. The gathas (songs or poems) impart significant details concerning early Buddhism and some of its integral elements of mental and spiritual development. -

Introduction Transgender and intersex people, and at times other LGBTIQA+ people, have been ex- cluded from ordination as a Buddhist monastic in the Theravāda tradition. This exclusion is the result of what I will show is an erroneous reading of several Pali terms–paṇḍaka and ubhatob yañ janaka–in the monastic disciplinary code (Vinaya Piṭaka) of the Theravāda tradition. -

Charles Muller The primary method of teaching Buddhism in universities up to now has been through the study of Buddhist texts, philosophy, and the history of its transmission. Although alternative approaches to the study of Buddhism were being taken up when I entered graduate school thirty years ago, I was discouraged from investigating them, being advised that such approaches fell outside of the “real” study of Buddhism. While much has changed since I entered graduate school, we continue to place greater emphasis on these facets of Buddhism than Buddhism as a “lived” tradition. This lack of balance in our teaching almost guarantees that we will also pass along long-standing misconceptions about the tradition. While the study of texts, philosophy, philology, and such will always be central to the field, increasingly students want to know about Buddhism as it is lived and understood by practitioners, historical and contemporary, monks and nuns, and the laity. While the anthropology of Buddhism has grown as a field, it does not appear to be well represented in the texts we use to teach. Thus, this volume goes far in filling this lacuna in our teaching resources by presenting a series of biographies of Buddhists that demonstrates the way in which they try and live their livesas Buddhists. -

It is designed to survey and analyse the teachings of the Bodhisattva ideal and its gradual development in selected Buddhist scriptures. The main issues relate to the evolution of the teachings of the Bodhisattva ideal. The Bodhisattva doctrine and practice are examined in six major stages. These stages correspond to the scholarly periodisation of Buddhist thought in India, namely (1) the Bodhisattva’s qualities and career in the early scriptures, (2) the debates concerning the Bodhisattva in the early schools, (3) the early Mahayana portrayal of the Bodhisattva and the acceptance of the six perfections, (4) the Bodhisattva doctrine in the earlier prajhaparamita-siltras\ (5) the Bodhisattva practices in the later prajnaparamita texts, and (6) the evolution of the six perfections (paramita) in a wide range of Mahayana texts. -
Responses to the 5 Points for the UK Siladharas
Responses to the 5 Points for the UK Siladharas Perspective from an anonymous Siladhara on receiving the 5 Points -- one shared by most others -- but who have found the atmosphere sufficiently intimidating that it has generated a lack of possibility for them to respond publically in a way authentic to their experience. “I have been a Theravadan nun for a number of years. I love the Sangha with my whole Being and monastic life is like breathing to me. I never had any difficulties or problems with being a woman. I really enjoy it, and could see the advantages and limitation of it, as with any conditions. While spending some time in the East, I was deeply shocked by the way women are treated there even now. Coming back to the West and still sensitive from this discrepancy, to my distress I realized that a similar attitude unconsciously suffuses the whole monastic structure even in the West. Being a nun in this environment has become increasingly more and more challenging. I have been trying to do my best to transform this pain/dukkha and desperately trying to understand this suffering and find peace. It has been an on-going process for the last few years. With our most senior monks being critical and upset with the nuns in public and in private last year and then introducing these 5-points, it has became even more confusing and unbearable. I cannot help feeling I am judged and discriminated about, just on the condition of having a female birth this lifetime. It does not make any sense to me. -

I had never talked about this before. During the talk, a young woman in the zendo began to cry. Every now and then I would glance her One Worldwide Nettwork: way and wonder what was happening: Had she lost a child? Ended a relationship? She cried and A Report cried. I wondered what was triggering these unstoppable tears? The following day Nyogen Sensei mentioned to me that she was still crying, and he had gently Newsline asked her if she could tell him why. “It just had not occurred to me,” she said, “that a woman could be a Buddha.” A few years later when I met her again, the emotions of that moment suddenly surfaced. -

We have spoken of the ksantis or Patiences (vi. 25d) and of the jndnas or Knowledges (vi. 26b), of samyagdrsti or Right Views (vi. 50c) and of samyagjndna or Right Knowledge (vi. 76c). Are the Patiences actually Knowledges, and isn't Right Knowledge identical to Right Views? la. The pure Patiences are not a type of Knowledge.2 The eight types of pure Patience which form part of the Path of Seeing (dbhisamaydntika, vi. 25d-26c) are not, by their nature, knowledge;3 for, at the moment of patience, the defilement of doubt, which each Patience abandons, is not already abandoned. But Knowledge is certain: it is produced when doubt is abandoned These eight types of Patience are Seeing, because, by their nature, they are examination.4 In opposition to the pure Patiences which are Seeing and are not Knowledge, lb. The prajnd of destruction and of non-arising is not seeing.5 The knowledge of destruction (ksayajndna) and the knowledge of Non-Arising {anutpadajrlana, vi. 67a-b)—when they constitute Bodhi—are not Seeing, because they do not include examination, and because the intention of inquiry is not in them.6 1088 Chapter Seven lc. All other pure prajnd is both one and the other. Besides the Patiences and the two Knowledges named above, pure prajnd is at one and the same time both seeing and knowledge, for it includes examination, and is therefore seeing; it is free from doubt, and is therefore knowledge.
