CALLOMON1 and Eugen GRĂDINARU2 Abstract: The taxonomy of the Liassic ammonites from Munteana (Sviniţa Zone, South Carpathians, Romania) collected by Răileanu (1953), with some subsequent additions, preserved in the collections of the Department of Geology in the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, University of Bucharest, is reviewed. The most important elements are represented by the Liparoceratidae. These include forms hitherto unknown, described now as Liparoceras carpathicum sp.nov. [M] and Aegoceras carpathicum sp.nov. [m]. These liparoceratids reveal the presence of a sharply-constrained biohorizon in the Liassic deposits of Munteana of Pliensbachian, Late Carixian age (Davoei Zone) and provide an important palaeobiogeographic reference-point in the region of the Carpathians. The Liassic ammonite fauna from Munteana in Răileanu's collection illustrates the value of the fossils that are locked in museum collections, waiting to be described. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS June 15, 1973 Paper 62 THE INFLUENCE OF THEORETICAL IDEAS ON AMMONITE CLASSIFICATION FROM HYATT TO TRUEMAN D. T. DONOVAN University College, London, England ABSTRACT The origins of the theory of recapitulation as applied to the evolution of fossil groups are examined. The theory is shown to have originated independently at least three times, with L. Agassiz and Hyatt, Müller and Haeckel, and S. S. Buckman, respectively. Hyatt further introduced the idea of cycles of evolution whereby many independent lineages underwent similar changes. Buckman, like Hyatt before him, applied recapitulation and cyclic evolution to prob- lems of the systematics of Jurassic ammonites. He recognized, however, that recapitulation was imperfect and that some stages of phylogeny were often omitted from ontogeny, especially when a more direct development was thereby produced. Buckman's application of recapitulation was accompanied by extreme taxonomic splitting. Trueman applied the theory of recapitulation to the Lower Jurassic family Liparo- ceratidae and reconstructed nine lineages each evolving front capricorn to sphaerocone form. This interpretation was later challenged by Spath. Trueman and Williams later attempted to use the theory to elucidate the family Echioceratidae but were unable to trace any lineages. Pavlov and Spath opposed the universal application by certain paleontologists of recapitulation theory and drew attention to sequences of fossils which did not support it. Their views were supported by biological critics of the theory. The theory was abandoned by English ammonite workers by the end of the 1920's. INTRODUCTION This paper is intended as an introduction to count of the ideas of Hyatt and his school or of the accompanying systematic revision of genera their effect on ammonite systematics, which was in the Lower Jurassic ammonite family Echiocera- extensive and often disastrous. -

Twenty Five species of ammonites representing fifteen genera from Pliensbachian rocks of the Spatsizi Group are described and their stratigraphic ranges in the thesis area determined. The Spatsizi fauna is comprised primarily of ammonites of Tethyan aspect and also contains elements endemic to the East Pacific faunal realm. -

ABSTRACT - The ammonite assemblages found in the spathic Fu3 shell beds (lumachellas) of the Grilli Quarry (Furlo Pass, Umbria- Marche Apennines, central Italy) supplement the previous studies on the early Pliensbachian (Carixian) in this area, allowing to obtain a quite varied taxonomic, biostratigraphic and paleobiogeographic framework. The abundant documentation of the three lumachellas forming the Fu3 fauna (Fu3a, Fu3b1 and Fu3b2) belongs to the second Apennine biozone of the early Pliensbachian: this unit was formerly indicated as Miltoceras sellae Taxon Range Biozone, but here is redefined in a formally more correct way as Miltoceras Interval Biozone. Among the several ammonites collected, many new taxa are described: the new species Miltoceras furlense (family Coeloceratidae, subfamily Coeloceratinae), the new genus Spiniclaviceras for the new species S. spirale (family Coeloceratidae, subfamily Dubariceratinae), the new genus Paramorphites with the new species P. acutiventris (family Polymorphitidae, subfamily Polymorphitinae), and the new genus Sphenoacanthites (family Sinuiceratidae) instituted for the Tunisian forms erroneously reported as Gorgheiceras costotuberculatum and G. -
The Lower Jurassic of Europe: Its Subdivision and Correlation

The Lower Jurassic of Europe: its subdivision and correlation Kevin N. Page The Lower Jurassic Sub-system comprises four stages, in chronological order, the Hettangian, Sinemurian, Pliensbachian and Toarcian. Each stage is subdivided into a sequence of ‘standard zones’ (= chronozones) and subzones – each correlated primarily on the basis of its ammonite fauna. A further increase in stratigraphical resolution is available by the use of intra-subzonal units known collectively as ‘horizons’. The close link between ammonites and chronostratigra- phy means that faunal provincialism may determine which zonal framework, and therefore which subdivision of the Lower Jurassic, applies in different regions of Europe. Such provincialism is of minor importance in the early Jurassic (Hettangian – Lower Pliensbachian) but increases sig- nificantly in the Upper Pliensbachian and into the Toarcian where at least three ammonoid fau- nal provinces are distinguishable. The standard zonal schemes for each relevant faunal area are discussed here, with greatest emphasis being placed on the Northwest European Province, which is characteristic of much of northern Europe throughout most of the Early Jurassic. Intra-subzonal units have only been described in certain regions for parts of the Lower Jurassic but where recog- nisable these are introduced. Keywords: Europe, Lower Jurassic,
