  • New and Poorly Known Perisphinctoidea (Ammonitina) from the Upper Tithonian of Le Chouet (Drôme, SE France)
Volumina Jurassica, 2014, Xii (1): 113–128 New and poorly known Perisphinctoidea (Ammonitina) from the Upper Tithonian of Le Chouet (Drôme, SE France) Luc G. BULOT1, Camille FRAU2, William A.P. WIMBLEDON3 Key words: Ammonoidea, Ataxioceratidae, Himalayitidae, Neocomitidae, Upper Tithonian, Le Chouet, South-East France. Abstract. The aim of this paper is to document the ammonite fauna of the upper part of the Late Tithonian collected at the key section of Le Chouet (Drôme, SE France). Emphasis is laid on new and poorly known Ataxioceratidae, Himalayitidae and Neocomitidae from the upper part of the Tithonian. Among the Ataxioceratidae, a new account on the taxonomy and relationship between Paraulacosphinctes Schindewolf and Moravisphinctes Tavera is presented. Regarding the Himalayitidae, the range and content of Micracanthoceras Spath is discussed and two new genera are introduced: Ardesciella gen. nov., for a group of Mediterranean ammonites that is homoeomorphic with the Andean genus Corongoceras Spath, and Pratumidiscus gen. nov. for a specimen that shows morphological similarities with the Boreal genera Riasanites Spath and Riasanella Mitta. Finally, the occurrence of Neocomitidae in the uppermost Tithonian is documented by the presence of the reputedly Berriasian genera Busnardoiceras Tavera and Pseudargentiniceras Spath. Klug et al. Swiss J Palaeontol (2020) 139:9 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13358-020-00210-y Swiss Journal of Palaeontology RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access First record of non-mineralized cephalopod jaws and arm hooks from the latest Cretaceous of Eurytania, Greece Christian Klug1* , Donald Davesne2,3, Dirk Fuchs4 and Thodoris Argyriou5 Abstract Due to the lower fossilization potential of chitin, non-mineralized cephalopod jaws and arm hooks are much more rarely preserved as fossils than the calcitic lower jaws of ammonites or the calcitized jaw apparatuses of nautilids. Here, we report such non-mineralized fossil jaws and arm hooks from pelagic marly limestones of continental Greece. Two of the specimens lie on the same slab and are assigned to the Ammonitina; they represent upper jaws of the aptychus type, which is corroborated by fnds of aptychi. Additionally, one intermediate type and one anaptychus type are documented here. The morphology of all ammonite jaws suggest a desmoceratoid afnity. The other jaws are identifed as coleoid jaws. They share the overall U-shape and proportions of the outer and inner lamellae with Jurassic lower jaws of Trachyteuthis (Teudopseina). We also document the frst belemnoid arm hooks from the Tethyan Maastrichtian. The fossils described here document the presence of a typical Mesozoic cephalopod assemblage until the end of the Cretaceous in the eastern Tethys. ACTA PALAEONTOLOGICA ROMANIAE V. 5 (2005), P. 49-65 FROM THE THESAURUS OF THE MUSEUM COLLECTIONS. I. LIASSIC AMMONITES FROM MUNTEANA (SVINIŢA ZONE, SOUTHERN CARPATHIANS, ROMANIA) John H. CALLOMON1 and Eugen GRĂDINARU2 Abstract: The taxonomy of the Liassic ammonites from Munteana (Sviniţa Zone, South Carpathians, Romania) collected by Răileanu (1953), with some subsequent additions, preserved in the collections of the Department of Geology in the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, University of Bucharest, is reviewed. The most important elements are represented by the Liparoceratidae. These include forms hitherto unknown, described now as Liparoceras carpathicum sp.nov. [M] and Aegoceras carpathicum sp.nov. [m]. These liparoceratids reveal the presence of a sharply-constrained biohorizon in the Liassic deposits of Munteana of Pliensbachian, Late Carixian age (Davoei Zone) and provide an important palaeobiogeographic reference-point in the region of the Carpathians. The Liassic ammonite fauna from Munteana in Răileanu's collection illustrates the value of the fossils that are locked in museum collections, waiting to be described. ABSTRACT - Fu1 and Fu2 faunas, represented by the spathic lumachella horizons of the Grilli Quarry (Furlo Pass, Umbria- Marche Apennines), contain two highly biodiversified assemblages. They follow chronologically the “Venturi ’78” bed from the Pallareto Quarry (Catriceras catriense bioevent), which is considered the first post-Sinemurian record to be found in the Apennines: as a whole, these three faunas characterize the lower part of the Early Pliensbachian (Carixian) in our area. The material collected at the Furlo Pass enabled us to recognize an unexpected wealth of forms, including some completely new taxa. Within the Psiloceratida (order comprising the taxa traditionally placed in the Lytoceratina and Ammonitina), the new family Holcolytoceratidae is proposed here for Audaxlytoceras together with Holcolytoceras. Among the Eoderoceratoidea, we describe the new species Omoderoceras latispira (a Paramicroderoceratinae with monospinate inner stage, formerly found in the “Venturi ’78” bed), and we note the discovery of the first Apennine ammonoid ascribable to Apoderoceras.

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS May 15, 1970 Paper 47 SIGNIFICANCE OF SUTURES IN PHYLOGENY OF AMMONOIDEA JURGEN KULLMANN AND JOST WIEDMANN Universinit Tubingen, Germany ABSTRACT Because of their complex structure ammonoid sutures offer best possibilities for the recognition of homologies. Sutures comprise a set of individual elements, which may be changed during the course of ontogeny and phylogeny as a result of heterotopy, hetero- morphy, and heterochrony. By means of a morphogenetic symbol terminology, sutural formulas may be established which show the composition of adult sutures as well as their ontogenetic development. WEDEKIND ' S terminology system is preferred because it is the oldest and morphogenetically the most consequent, whereas RUZHENTSEV ' S system seems to be inadequate because of its usage of different symbols for homologous elements. WEDEKIND ' S system includes only five symbols: E (for external lobe), L (for lateral lobe), I (for internal lobe), A (for adventitious lobe), U (for umbilical lobe). Investigations on ontogenetic development show that all taxonomic groups of the entire superorder Ammonoidea can be compared one with another by means of their sutural development, expressed by their sutural formulas. Most of the higher and many of the lower taxa can be solely characterized and arranged in phylogenetic relationship by use of their sutural formulas. INTRODUCTION Today very few ammonoid workers doubt the (e.g., conch shape, sculpture, growth lines) rep- importance of sutures as indication of ammonoid resent less complicated structures; therefore, phylogeny. The considerable advances in our numerous homeomorphs restrict the usefulness of knowledge of ammonoid evolution during recent these features for phylogenetic investigations.

  • (AMMONOIDEA) the Hypothesis of Sexual Dimorphis
ACT A PAL A EON T 0 LOG I CAP 0 LON ICA Vol. 21 1 976 No 1 WOJCIECH BROCHWICZ-LEWINSKI & ZDZISLAW ROZAK SOME DIFFICULTIES IN RECOGNITION OF SEXUAL DIMORPHISM IN JURASSIC PERISPHINCTIDS (AMMONOIDEA) Abstract. - The recent studies on perisphinctids have shown repeated occurrence of peristomal modifications and thus their limited reliability as a sign of ceasing of shell growth. Moreover, they have shown a trend to disappearance of the lappets at larger shell diameters. New evidence for the occurrence of the lappets on small-sized "macroconchs" is given and the transition from "micro-" to "macroconchs" seems possible. It is concluded that the perisphinctids may represent a new type of dimor phism not encountered in other groups of ammonites and that the Makowski-Callo mon hypothesis of the sexual dimorphism is not so universal as it was considered to be. The criterion of identity of inner whorls may be applied in the systematics of ammonites without making reference to the dimorphism as it was applied by Neumayr (1873) and Siemiradzki (1891). INTRODUCTION The hypothesis of sexual dimorphism in ammonites, put fOll"ward in the XIX C., revived and attracted much attention thanks to the papers by Ma kowski (1962) and Callomon (1963). The premise for differentiation of the dimorphism was the cooccurrence of two groups of ammonites differing in the ultimate shell size, ornamentation of outer whorl(s) and the type of pe ristomal modifications and displaying identical or practically indistinguis hable inner whmls (Makowski, 1962; Callomon, 1963, 1969; and others). The dimorphism was interpreted as sexual in nature.

© Biologiezentrum Linz, download unter www.biologiezentrum.at Cephalopod evolution: A new perspective – Implications from two Early Cretaceous ammonoid suborders (Northern Calcareous Alps, Upper Austria) A . L U K E NE DE R Abstract: The status of two Early Cretaceous ammonoid groups from Upper Austria (Northern Calcareous Alps) is examined with respect to the evolution of their shape as well as to their morphology and environmental preference. The Valanginian Olcoste- phanus guebhardi (Verrucosum Zone, 137 mya) shows the evolutionary separation of sex in two different environments and has adapted its shape to the somewhat different environmental conditions. The heteromorph Barremian ammonoid Karsteniceras tern- bergense (Coronites Zone, 124 mya) is shown to have evolved during times with intermittent oxygen-depleted conditions associa- ted with stable, salinity-stratified water masses. Based on lithological and geochemical analysis combined with investigations of trace fossils, microfossils and macrofossils, an invasion of an opportunistic (r-strategist) Karsteniceras biocoenosis during unfavou- rable conditions is assumed. Both examples are chosen to demonstrate evolutionary trends in the Early Cretaceous which can be observed in the cephalopod group as a whole. Key words: Evolution, ammonoids, palaeobiology, Northern Calcareous Alps, Early Cretaceous. Introduction phological change and therefore appears as a new evo- lutionary trend. Geodiversitas 29 (1) : 87-117. They represented Lower Pliensbachian. Keywords: Veľká Fatra Mts., ammonites, Pliensbachian, Liparoceratidae. Z nálezov boli opísané Becheiceras (Liparoceras) bechei (SOWERBy), Liparoceras (Becheiceras) gallicum SPATH , Androgynoceras maculatum (yOUNG, BIRD), Androgynoceras capricornus (SCHLOTHEIM), Androgynoceras cf. capricornus (SCHLOTHEIM), Vicininodiceras sp. a Oistoceras sp., ktoré reprezetujú spodný pliensbach. Kľúčové slová: Veľká Fatra Mts., ammonites, Pliensbachian, Liparoceratidae. Introduction one of the rich ammonite fauna in Slovakia come from adnet formation (the aF) of krížna nappe. ammonites from the aF in these mountains were found in the mid-19th to 20th century (Štúr, 1859; Štúr 1868; andrusov, 1931; rakús, 1964; Peržel, 1967).
