Bull. Soc. vaud. Sc. nat. 88.2: 247-255. Several morphotypes of Neophyllites from the Odoghertyceras/Choristoceras minutus beds of the New York Canyon (Gabbs Valley Range, Nevada) are described for the first time. The presence of these forms in North America allows a much better correlation of this stratigraphie interval with the coeval beds in North-West Europe. In addition, we discuss the age of the negative ô'3C anomalies located around the Triassic-Jurassic boundary in England, Hungary and Canada. We demonstrate that the first two are located in Rhaetian sediments and the latter is located above the Triassic- Jurassic boundary. Introduction During the last few years we have published several papers giving increasingly more precise data about the stratigraphie distribution ofbivalves and ammonites around the Triassic-Jurassic boundary in the New York Canyon (Gabbs Valley Range, Nevada) area: these data are summarised in Figure 1. r~ri -L-J i—r | Psiloceras pacificum, Nevadaphyllites compressus Choristoceras minutus, Psiloceras marcouxi, P. cf. pacificum i deweveri Odoghertyceras Neophyllites spp JUR. | P.tilmanni P.spelae, Juraphyllites Choristoceras C.crickmayi, Arcestes gigantogaleatus I sp.n. Neophyllites in the New York Canyon sections 249 The goal of the present paper is to describe new material referable to Neophyllites from the sections at New York Canyon, a potential stratotype of the Triassic-Jurassic boundary. The presence of such forms allows us to correlate precisely between our region and the Euro-boreal and Tethyan sections where the lower Hettangian is well represented. These Neophyllites were collected from the C. minutus-O. deweveri beds. Palaeontology Four crushed specimens were collected in sections 2 (bed L-20) and 6 (bed M-3) described by Guex (1995; see also Guex 1982, Guex et al. 1998 and Taylor & Guex 2000, 2001). They are described below. Suture lines of our specimens are unfortunately not preserved. However we show that from purely morphological and biometrical points of view, that they can be referred to Neophyllites with reasonable confidence (see Fig. 3). Neophyllites aff. biptychus Lange (Fig. 2c) 1941 N. biptychus n.sp. Lange, PI.II fig.l 1941 N. biptychus intermedius n.subsp. Lange, PI.II. fig.2 Description Our specimen is complete and small. Its coiling is evolute and it shows straight, rectiradiate to prorsiradiate, irregularly bifurcated ribs. Biometrie data compiled from Lange's (1941) measurements show that the complete specimen lies well within the range of variability of Neophyllites from Germany. Neophyllites sp. Specimen of fig. 2a shows finely ribbed whorls in the umbilical part of the section and a smooth body chamber, and the second shows weak ribbing on the body chamber (Fig. 2b). Biometrie data compiled from Lange's (1941) measurements, show also that the specimens lie well within the range of variability of the German Neophyllites. 250 J. Guex, A. Bartolini and D. Neophyllites in the New York Canyon sections 251 Correlation with the biostratigraphic data from NW Europe Bloos (1999) and Bloos and Page (2000) published fundamental results on the distribution of the Hettangian psiloceratids from England and Germany, demonstrating that the oldest representative of this group belongs to Psiloceras erugatum and to various species of the genus Neophyllites. These forms are clearly older than the P. planorbis and P. psilonotum group. Neophyllites described in the present paper are also older than the first abundant Psiloceras from Nevada belonging to the P. pacificum group and it seems reasonable to correlate these levels with the NW European Neophyllites beds. However, our data prove that the oldest Psiloceras (i.e. P. spelae and the first representative of P. tilmanni) occur at a much lower stratigraphie level, located about 6 meters below the beds with Choristoceras minutus and Odoghertyceras. The equivalent beds in Europe are entirely lacking in ammonoids. The negative 513C excursions in Europe and Canada Hesselbo et al. (2002) suggested that the 513C negative anomaly reported from Queen Charlotte Island (Ward et al. 2001), Hungary (Palfy et al. 2001) and England (Hesselbo et al. 2002) could be used as marker for the Triassic-Jurassic boundary. However, the Hungarian occurrence is within the range of the conodont Misikella, and several meters below the disappearance of a rhaetian Rhacophyllites (identified as Psilocerasl in Palfy et al. 2000 and 2001) and the English occurrence is below the local extinction of conodonts (Hesselbo et al. 2002, Fig. 2 and 4). According to Swift (1989) and Warrington and al. (1994) these conodonts are found in several localities and are clearly not reworked. We note that everywhere in the world, conodonts disappear before the first appearance of Psiloceras and are diagnostic of triassic sediments. In other words we believe that these two negative anomalies are located below the Triassic-Jurassic boundary in these 2 regions.

WIMBLEDON3 Key words: Ammonoidea, Ataxioceratidae, Himalayitidae, Neocomitidae, Upper Tithonian, Le Chouet, South-East France. Abstract. The aim of this paper is to document the ammonite fauna of the upper part of the Late Tithonian collected at the key section of Le Chouet (Drôme, SE France). Emphasis is laid on new and poorly known Ataxioceratidae, Himalayitidae and Neocomitidae from the upper part of the Tithonian. Among the Ataxioceratidae, a new account on the taxonomy and relationship between Paraulacosphinctes Schindewolf and Moravisphinctes Tavera is presented. Regarding the Himalayitidae, the range and content of Micracanthoceras Spath is discussed and two new genera are introduced: Ardesciella gen. nov., for a group of Mediterranean ammonites that is homoeomorphic with the Andean genus Corongoceras Spath, and Pratumidiscus gen. nov. for a specimen that shows morphological similarities with the Boreal genera Riasanites Spath and Riasanella Mitta. Finally, the occurrence of Neocomitidae in the uppermost Tithonian is documented by the presence of the reputedly Berriasian genera Busnardoiceras Tavera and Pseudargentiniceras Spath. A newly discovered fossil cephalopod jaw apparatus that may belong to Permian representatives of the Endocochlia is described. Permorhynchus dentatus n. gen. n. sp. is established on the basis of this ~ apparatus. The asymmetry of jaws in the Ectocochlia may be connected with the double function of the ventral jaw apparatus, and the well-developed, relatively large frontal plate of the ventral jaw should be regarded as a feature common to all representatives of ectocochlian cephalopods evolved from early Palaeozoic stock. Distinct features seen in the jaw apparatus of Upper Pcrmian cndocochlians include the pronounced beak form of both jaws and the presence of oblong wings on the ventral mandible. o Cephalopoda. jaw. operculum. aptychus, anaptychus, Permorhynchus n.gen.• evolution. Swiss J Palaeontol (2020) 139:9 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13358-020-00210-y Swiss Journal of Palaeontology RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access First record of non-mineralized cephalopod jaws and arm hooks from the latest Cretaceous of Eurytania, Greece Christian Klug1* , Donald Davesne2,3, Dirk Fuchs4 and Thodoris Argyriou5 Abstract Due to the lower fossilization potential of chitin, non-mineralized cephalopod jaws and arm hooks are much more rarely preserved as fossils than the calcitic lower jaws of ammonites or the calcitized jaw apparatuses of nautilids. Here, we report such non-mineralized fossil jaws and arm hooks from pelagic marly limestones of continental Greece. Two of the specimens lie on the same slab and are assigned to the Ammonitina; they represent upper jaws of the aptychus type, which is corroborated by fnds of aptychi. Additionally, one intermediate type and one anaptychus type are documented here. The morphology of all ammonite jaws suggest a desmoceratoid afnity. The other jaws are identifed as coleoid jaws. They share the overall U-shape and proportions of the outer and inner lamellae with Jurassic lower jaws of Trachyteuthis (Teudopseina). We also document the frst belemnoid arm hooks from the Tethyan Maastrichtian. The fossils described here document the presence of a typical Mesozoic cephalopod assemblage until the end of the Cretaceous in the eastern Tethys. • Paleontological Research of the Mesozoic in Uie Central Zone And
Západně Karpaty • séria paleontológia (1) • P. 7—23 • GÚDŠ • Bratislava • 1975 Miloš Rakús Hettangian ammonites from the Strážovská hornatina Mts. (West Carpathians) 1 plate (CIV), 10 text-figs, Slovak summary The thorough geological — paleontological research of the Mesozoic in uie central zone and particularly in the Strážovská hornatina mountains resulted in detailed knowledge of the Hettangian Ammonites. Conse quently, a summarizing report may be presented on the ammonites. The first, and for considerable time the only published report on the Hettangian Ammonites was that by D. Stúr (1868, p. 378) from the loca lity Rakytov (the Velká Fatra mountains), viz A. psilonotus laevis (Q u .) = Psiloceras psilonotum (Quenstedt). Unfortunately, the find has not been repeated so far. Still I suppose that in this case its presence might be regarded as probable, since: a) the species Psiloceras psilonotum is a typical, easily identifiable form, and it is almost impossible to mistake it for another species; b) on the locality Rakytov are well-developed se quences of the Upper Triassic (the Rhaetic) to Lower Liassic. Both they yielded rich fauna of lamellibranchiates, so the presence of the Hettan gian may be taken for sure there. In the sixties (M. Rakús in M. Mahel 1962; V. Andrusovová —D. Andrusov 1968) published were some reports on the finds of the Hettangian Ammonites from the central zone. In the central zone of the West Carpathians, most Hettangian Ammonites come from the Strá žovská hornatina mountains (Central Slovakia). Other finds are from these localities: — the vicinity of Cierna Lehota (text — fig. 1); — Kozinec (text — fig. 2); — Trencianska Teplá.

  • Assessing the Record and Causes of Late Triassic Extinctions

N.W., Albuquerque, NM 87104, USA c Astrogeology Team, U.S. Geological Survey, 2255 N. Gemini Rd., Flagstaff, AZ 86001, USA Abstract Accelerated biotic turnover during the Late Triassic has led to the perception of an end-Triassic mass extinction event, now regarded as one of the ‘‘big five’’ extinctions. Close examination of the fossil record reveals that many groups thought to be affected severely by this event, such as ammonoids, bivalves and conodonts, instead were in decline throughout the Late Triassic, and that other groups were relatively unaffected or subject to only regional effects. Explanations for the biotic turnover have included both gradualistic and catastrophic mechanisms. Regression during the Rhaetian, with consequent habitat loss, is compatible with the disappearance of some marine faunal groups, but may be regional, not global in scale, and cannot explain apparent synchronous decline in the terrestrial realm. Gradual, widespread aridification of the Pangaean supercontinent could explain a decline in terrestrial diversity during the Late Triassic. Although evidence for an impact precisely at the boundary is lacking, the presence of impact structures with Late Triassic ages suggests the possibility of bolide impact-induced environmental degradation prior to the end-Triassic. Widespread eruptions of flood basalts of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) were synchronous with or slightly postdate the system boundary; emissions of CO2 and SO2 during these eruptions were substantial, but the contradictory evidence for the environmental effects of outgassing of these lavas remains to be resolved.
