INFLUENCE OF OVERSEAS TRAVEL EXPERIENCES ON THE WORLDVIEWS OF U.S. BACKPACKERS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management by Mark Kanning December 2008 Accepted by: Dr. William Norman, Committee Chair Dr. Wesley Burnett Dr. Christa Smith Dr. Greg Hawkins ABSTRACT Backpacking as a type of overseas travel has become a global phenomenon represented by people of various nationalities forming a postmodern dynamic, nomadic global community of travelers influencing, and being influenced by, each other and the locales in which they visit. Typically associated with overseas budget travel, backpacking has become an important component of global travel and tourism. However, research on backpackers from the United States have not been well represented in the travel and tourism literature. Recent publication has called for research to be conducted on backpackers originating from around the world including the United States. This dissertation addresses the issue. The purpose of this study was to explore the process through which worldviews were perceived to be influenced through the overseas travel experiences of backpackers from the United States. Grounded theory was used in answering the question of how are the worldviews of backpackers from the United States perceived to be influenced through their travel experiences because it is designed to understand processes of which little existing knowledge exists. The dissertation provides the process at both descriptive and conceptual levels. In-depth interviews of 22 individuals from the United States were conducted covering their travel careers, the planning of their journeys, the journey itself, and the return home. Throughout their journeys participants perceived that their worldviews were influenced by their experiences and this dissertation identified the process through which their worldviews were perceived to have been influenced. Freedom was the core emergent category that all other concepts and categories were drawn back to. Freedom from society, freedom to ii take risks, freedom to explore the unknown, freedom to be mobile, and the freedom to become aware of other worldviews were all at the core of the backpacking experience. Influencing of worldviews was perceived to be the result of freedom to travel in an unstructured manner requiring risk, openness, mobility, discomfort, dependency, time, patience, and vulnerability. The backpacking experiences of the participants occurred through freedom from societal constraints empowering them to take risks leading to opportunities for interactions leading to awareness of others worldviews. Through awareness of others worldviews the participants became conscious of their own worldviews through exposure to differences and similarities. Interactions with local residents and fellow backpackers challenged their existing worldviews creating a level of awareness they deemed would not have existed without those experiences. The results are limited to the participants and cannot be generalized to the general backpacker population or the backpackers from the United States. The contribution of this dissertation is three-fold: a.) it contributes to understanding the process of influencing worldviews through backpacking, b.) it creates transparency of the backpacking experience by backpackers from the United States, c.) the dissertation provides a base from which future backpacker studies focusing on backpackers from the United States can be instigated.     The Rhetoric of Travel Christine Helfers Mesa Community College For so many of our college students, their exposure to rhetoric and composition is limited to a few required courses and the „standard‟ assignments embedded in the textbooks chosen for such courses. However, writing instructors might consider alternative assignments to promote student success in writing and reading. One rapidly-growing and exciting genre worth studying from a rhetorical perspective is travel writing. Travel writing is a broad term, and may refer to many forms, including newspaper and magazine articles, blogs, webzines, advertising and promotional materials, travel program scripts, and thoughtful travel narratives that explore human nature as well as places. Travel writing topics run the gamut: humorous road trip narratives, exciting outdoor tales, encounters with unfamiliar cultures, and reflections on interesting neighborhood places or unusual destinations far away. Because of this variety, students are sure to find something appealing. Travel writing presents rich possibilities for analysis, interpretation and discussion. Rhetorical concepts such as purpose, occasion, and audience may be vividly demonstrated. Aesthetic, expressive and entertainment purposes of writing are also exemplified in many works of travel literature. Studying travel writing improves composition skills and multimedia communication abilities as well. Students observe, discuss, and employ qualities of effective writing such as well-paced narrative structure and vivid detail. Students are more engaged with writing, as their interest is sparked by lively readings and the opportunity to write about their own experiences. Since travel writing assignments often focus on local sights, students develop a greater “sense of place” about their own communities. What is travel writing? The definitions are hotly debated.

According to the World Tourism Organization report, business travel accounts for 13% of the international tourism market (UNTWO 2019). Yet, business travellers have received little attention in tourism research. In response to this gap in tourism scholarship, the present study provides a phenomenological portrayal of subjective experiences of frequent international business travellers (FIBT). The main goal of this exploratory study is to shed light on the unique features and consequences of business travel experiences, especially with respect to the following aspects: . Hall [a]Introduction The contribution of aviation to climate change is, with a global share of just 2 per cent of emissions of CO 2 (see chapter 2, this volume), often regarded as negligible. This perspective ignores, however, the current and expected growth in air traffic, as well as its socio-cultural drivers. Aviation is a rapidly growing sector, with annual passenger growth forecasts of 4.9 per cent in the coming 20 years (Airbus 2008) In a carbon-constrained world with the ambition to reduce absolute levels of greenhouse gas emissions and limited options to technically achieve these (see chapter 13, this volume), the growth in air traveller numbers thus indicates an emerging conflict (see also chapter 4, this volume) Moreover, it becomes increasingly clear that aviation is an activity in which comparably few people participate. With regard to international aviation, it can be estimated that only about 2-3 per cent of the world’s population fly in between any two countries over one consecutive year (Peeters et al 2006), indicating that participation in air travel is highly unequally distributed on a global scale. The vast majority of air travellers currently originate from industrialized countries, even though there are some recent trends, particularly in China and India, showing rapid growth in air travel (cf. UNWTO 2007) There is also evidence that air travel is unevenly distributed within nations, particularly those with already high levels of individual mobility. In industrialized countries there is evidence of a minority of highly mobile individuals, who account for a large share of the overall kilometres travelled, especially by air.

In Sandra Cisneros’s well-known short story, “Woman Hollering Creek,” a young Mexican woman named Cleófilas is driven to a bus station in San Antonio, Texas by a Chicana woman named Felice in order to escape a violent marriage and return to her family in Mexico. Cleófilas’s movement away from her husband’s violent home to the more protective space of her family’s home in Mexico, where she will live with a newly-empowered self gained by escaping marital abuse, is powerfully symbolized by means of how this movement is achieved.
