Weekly Newsletter December 28, 2020 Volume 21, Issue 6 Weekly Newsletter T'was 4 sleeps before New Year’s Eve, and all through the town, people wore masks, that covered their frown. The frown had begun way back in the spring when a global pandemic changed everything. They called it corona, but unlike the beer, it didn’t bring good times, it didn’t bring cheer. Airplanes were grounded, travel was banned. Borders were closed across air, sea, and land. As the world entered lockdown to flatten the curve, the economy halted, and folks lost their nerve. From March to July, we rode the first wave, people stayed home, they tried to behave. When summer emerged the lockdown was lifted, but away from caution, many folks drifted. Now it is December and cases are spiking, wave two has arrived, much to our disliking. It’s true Inside this issue that this year has had sadness a-plenty, we’ll never forget the year 2020. It came because of "a chance encounter between a straight athlete and an LGBT photographer. The photographer spoke about how many men felt like him — excluded from sport on the grounds of their sexuality or because there seemed to be no place for them within sport's deeply masculine culture," "Following on from that conversation, a group of mainly straight athletes committed to getting naked for a calendar with a specific message for LGBT+ men: we want to celebrate your sexuality and prove that you are welcome on our team!" Read more The Legacy Of Getting Naked: The Road Not Taken I’ve developed a fascination as of late, or perhaps more accurately, an obsession, with what I’ve labeled as the Legacy Nudist Resorts of America. This crusade of sorts began as a quest to visit the most renowned of these places over the past eight months, while our proclivity to join the ranks of social nudity were suddenly limited by the confines of a road trip. No more bouncing to Croatia or France for Nakation; time to explore our own backyard! I’ve not heard anyone else use the moniker of legacy in regard to naturist establish- ments, and in fact, I’m not quite sure how to define it myself. But I’m most fascinated with those early nudist camps established by (mostly) European pioneers before World War II. I’m thinking the likes of Solair Recreation League in Connecticut, or Skyfarm in New Jersey, or even Lake O’ the Woods Club in Indiana. A dead givea- way to the origin of a place is a name that fails to make any reference to nudi- ty whatsoever, supposedly obfuscating that awkward moment when the monthly newsletter arrived in your mailbox wrapped in brown paper with an innocuous return address. Josh Brolin Poses Nude While Sipping His Morning Coffee In Photo Taken by His Wife Josh Brolin is baring it all. On Tuesday, the 52-year-old actor posted a photo on Instagram of himself posing naked while casually sipping his morning coffee outside of a red RV. In the snap, taken by his wife Kathryn Brolin, the nude Avengers: Endgame star sits on a chair while stretching his feet out to comfortably rest on a table with a beautiful desert backdrop. "At the end of the day a life will judged by how often you were naked,” he captioned the photo. “Nobody told they meant metaphorically.” Josh received an array of entertaining comments on his post. Photographer Lee Jeffries wrote, "Never been so glad to see striped cushions...." "Whoa big guy. What’s happening here ? You do have a nice quad ? said actor Frank Grillo, while director Taika Waititi commented three laughing emojis. Josh and Kathryn, who tied the knot in September 2016, are currently expecting their second child, due this month. The couple already shares 2-year-old daughter Westlyn Reign. The 33-year-old entrepreneur announced her pregnancy in July, sharing a photo of herself baring her baby bump while posing outdoors with Westlyn. "The Brolins are a growin' !!" she wrote on Instagram. Ralf had moved there some years before from Germany with his family. For many Germans, nudity is about as natural as having a beer with a bratwurst. But the Greek culture is more conservative and Ralf adjusted to his surroundings. The beach down the road had a small secluded part behind a rock, and as naturists living under the Mediterranean sun, this was the per- fect spot for the family to go nude sunbathing and skinny dipping without disturbing anyone else. When a local fisherman spotted the family one day and undressed as well, Ralf had an idea. Why not make this small stretch of warm sand a nude beach? He gathered some wood, made one of those typical signs with a crossed-out bikini, and put it in front of the large rock. A new nude beach was born. Until about a week later, when the sign was gone. Ralf didn’t just give up like that and the next day he painted the crossed-out bikini sign on the rock. But once again, not many days later somebody had sprayed graffiti over it. Apparently, someone in town was not all too happy with this new nude beach. • Into Reading, Into Writing Engaging Students with Travel Writing
The Rhetoric of Travel Christine Helfers Mesa Community College For so many of our college students, their exposure to rhetoric and composition is limited to a few required courses and the „standard‟ assignments embedded in the textbooks chosen for such courses. However, writing instructors might consider alternative assignments to promote student success in writing and reading. One rapidly-growing and exciting genre worth studying from a rhetorical perspective is travel writing. Travel writing is a broad term, and may refer to many forms, including newspaper and magazine articles, blogs, webzines, advertising and promotional materials, travel program scripts, and thoughtful travel narratives that explore human nature as well as places. Travel writing topics run the gamut: humorous road trip narratives, exciting outdoor tales, encounters with unfamiliar cultures, and reflections on interesting neighborhood places or unusual destinations far away. Because of this variety, students are sure to find something appealing. Travel writing presents rich possibilities for analysis, interpretation and discussion. Rhetorical concepts such as purpose, occasion, and audience may be vividly demonstrated. Aesthetic, expressive and entertainment purposes of writing are also exemplified in many works of travel literature. Studying travel writing improves composition skills and multimedia communication abilities as well. Students observe, discuss, and employ qualities of effective writing such as well-paced narrative structure and vivid detail. Students are more engaged with writing, as their interest is sparked by lively readings and the opportunity to write about their own experiences. Since travel writing assignments often focus on local sights, students develop a greater “sense of place” about their own communities. What is travel writing? The definitions are hotly debated.

  • Snapshots from the Mother Road”: Travel and Motherhood in Lorraine
Label Me Latina/o Spring 2013 Volume III 1 “Snapshots from the Mother Road”: Travel and Motherhood in Lorraine López’s The Gifted Gabaldón Sisters By Cristina Herrera Everything about this woman, this Felice, amazed Cleófilas. The fact that she drove a pickup. A pickup, mind you, but when Cleófilas asked if it was her husband’s, she said she didn’t have a husband. The pickup was hers. She herself had chosen it. She herself was paying for it. I used to have a Pontiac Sunbird. But those cars are for viejas. Pussy cars. Now this car is a real car. What kind of talk was that coming from a woman? Cleófilas thought. But then again, Felice was like no woman she’d ever met. Can you imagine, when we crossed the arroyo she just started yelling like a crazy, she would later say to her father and brothers. Just like that. Who would’ve thought? (Cisneros “Woman Hollering Creek” 55-56) The epigraph quoted above speaks volumes on the nature of the road trip when embarked upon by Chicanas. In Sandra Cisneros’s well-known short story, “Woman Hollering Creek,” a young Mexican woman named Cleófilas is driven to a bus station in San Antonio, Texas by a Chicana woman named Felice in order to escape a violent marriage and return to her family in Mexico. Cleófilas’s movement away from her husband’s violent home to the more protective space of her family’s home in Mexico, where she will live with a newly-empowered self gained by escaping marital abuse, is powerfully symbolized by means of how this movement is achieved.

ROAD TRIP handbook N INTRODUCTION Overview Road trips have been a classic North American pastime for as long as there have been cars. U.S. Route 66 was one of the first cross-country highways, which allowed for uninterrupted travel from Chicago to Los Angeles from 1926 to 1985. Technological advancements in automobiles during the late 1930s and early 1940s allowed families to migrate westward as well as travel around the country for recreation. The increasing reliability of automobiles during the 1950s contributed to the rapid growth in their popularity, especially for leisure travel. The Trans-Canada Highway was completed in 1971 and allows continuous travel through Canada from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. This highway is over 8,000 kilometres in length, making it one of the longest national highways in the world. Canada and the United States share a 6,417 km long border, making it easy for Canadians to travel to many locations in the northern U.S.. The onset of road trips as vacation resulted from the increase of many businesses that catered to travellers, including roadside motels, restaurants and campgrounds. These services and the improvement in car speeds and comfort have made road trips very popular. Benefits of Travelling By Car Travelling remains one of the top interests for many people, regardless of the number of trips they’ve made in the past. They’re fun and relaxing, and also offer travellers an opportunity for cultural enhancement and mind-enriching experiences. A slow economy can make air or rail travel seem out of reach, but if you drive and rely on camping and other low-cost accommodations, you can reduce the expense of your vacation.
