The popularity of blues music in Basel is ever-growing, with audiences of all ages flocking to the increasing number of small and large venues inviting world-class blues artists to the Basel area. On its 10th anniversary, the Blues Festival Basel was officially recognized by the Blues Foundation Memphis, Tennessee, and the annually awarded Swiss Blues Award has become prestigious—not only in Switzerland, but also in the birthplace of blues music, where one award now sits in the Chicago living room of blues talent and Basel native Sam Burckhardt. Currently in its 17th year, the Blues Festival Basel for 6 days will feature international stars from the world of blues, as well as talent from the local blues scene. The Volkshaus in Kleinbasel is the perfect venue for this style of music with club-table seating in the front section, regular seating in the middle, and a standing-room area by the bar where drinks can be enjoyed throughout the concerts. The evening concerts start at 20:00, doors open at 19:00, and tickets can be purchased through Ticketcorner. Prices range from CHF 41.20 for standing-room tickets to CHF 71.80 for the best seats and CHF 91.90 for reserved-table seating with service. Der Teufel mit den Drei Goldenen Haaren (The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs) April 6, 7, and 17 Theater Basel will be the location for this musical theater based on the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale entitled “Der Teufel mit den drei goldenen Haaren.” This is the timeless story of a young man who pursues his chosen path with boldness and courage. He is born the golden child in a hopeless kingdom where the leaves on the golden apple trees have died and the fountain of wine has dried up. The lucky child, who is thought to be the only hope to restore the kingdom to its former prosperity, grows up with the desire to marry the princess. Out of fear, the king decides to get rid of him by sending him on a mission to hell, to bring back the devil’s three golden hairs. But his unwavering belief in his own abilities and luck give the young man the strength to travel to the darkest places and meet impos- sible tasks with confidence. For this tale about the confidence in one's own self, young composer Stefan John Hanke created a multi-layered music that portrays the optimism and exuberance of the lucky child but resonates at times with grim and ironic tones. Yesterday’s Tin and Enamel Advertising Signs April 16 – October 9 For approximately half a century—at a time when advertisement was designed to last—tin and enamel advertising signs adorned façades and walls. These signs have helped write a chapter of advertising history and represented some of the most outstanding designs of international commercial art. From approximately 1890 up until their functional de- cline in the 1950s, bright enamel signs were impressive, colorful fea- tures in the bleak, industrial towns of that time. The advertising topics were varied, even then: lighting, fuel, coffee, body care, beer, alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, food, and much more. Swiss Army Knife Factory Delémont, JU What could be more Swiss than chocolate, cheese, and Swiss Army knives? Swiss Army knives are wonderful and practical little icons of Switzerland that come in hundreds of different models, many available International in a variety of colors. The Wenger company, located in Delémont, and Victorinox, located in Ibach, have both made Swiss Army knives since the late 1800s. The School production, which started as a contract they received from the Swiss Army to produce knives, turned into a world-wide commodity, with mil- lions sold every year. However, the business of making Swiss Army Rheinfelden knives suffered a tremendous blow following the terrorist attacks in 2001, when changes in airport security regulations made it impossible to carry the small pocket knives in carry-on luggage. This diminished the sales of Swiss Army knives at duty-free shops and in stores in gen- eral. The crisis led to the acquisition of Wenger by Victorinox in 2005, branding the Wenger knives as “Genuine Swiss Army Knives” and the Victorinox knives as “Original Swiss Army Knives.” As a result, Wenger started to introduce changes in its product line to distinguish itself from its now sister’s products. In 2013, Wenger and Victorinox merged into one brand, with all production now taking place in the Wenger factory in Delémont. (Wenger’s watch and licensing business, however, continue as separate brands.) The new Victorinox/Wenger Swiss Army knife models are branded as Victorinox and are now called the “Delémont Collection.” Since the merger, 56 new Swiss Army knives have been introduced, which have the requisite blades, drivers, files, wrenches, punches, openers, and pliers, but may also include nail clippers, scis- sors, rulers, tiny compasses, and even cigar cutters on some of the models. After years of construction activities and street closures impeding traffic, the new building will finally be inaugurated this April. At the same time, the main building of the Kunstmuseum, which has been closed for the past 14 months for extensive renovations, will also celebrate its re-opening. MUBA April 15–24 The MUBA, the largest and oldest public exhibition in Switzerland turns 100 this year! The fair was organized for the first time in 1917 under the name “Schweizer Muster- messe” (Swiss Industries Fair)—a trade fair representing all sectors of the Swiss econ- omy. It was the mother of all trade fairs from which many more specialized fairs were spawned, including the watch and jewelry show, “BASELWORLD;” the fair of the wood- processing industry, “Holz;” the construction fair “Swissbau;” and the garden fair “Giar- dina,” just to name a few. The MUBA, the name adopted as an abbreviation from MUster- messe BAsel, has been held annually in the early part of the year for the last 100 years, and despite its many changes and expansions, it is still considered the largest of its kind in the country, attracting more than 130,000 visitors last year. So for the 100th time, the MUBA this year will bring us exciting products and services to look at, learn about, sample or taste, play with, order, buy, and/or simply enjoy. You can find everything from home furnishings, art, appliances, renovations, clothing, leather, jewelry, wines, and food to innovations and design, sports, recreation, vacation, nature, international wares, activities, and so much more. There will be daily activities, such as cooking and fashion shows, autograph session with FC Basel stars, and sports activities. Besides his documentary comics journalism, Sacco stuns audi- ences with satirical works, both text and image, that are a parody questioning the excesses of today's society. In this conversation, topics such as his journalistic work, images of war and violence, and the role of his attitude towards political caricature will be discussed. Volunteering at Lange Erlen The Tierpark (animal park) at Lange Erlen is a non-profit organization that houses many animals for the public to visit daily, free of charge. It has been kept alive through the generous sponsorship and donations of the members of a supporting organization, the Erlen-Verein, which also includes a youth program. Chil- dren ages 11–16 are welcome to volunteer for this “Erlen-Kids” program. On Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons, the kids can come from 14:00–17:00 and care for the ponies, donkeys, and goats by cleaning the stables, grooming and brushing the animals, and accompanying them on walks in the park. Additionally, the Erlen-Kids run the popular pony rides for young children on Sunday afternoons, all under supervision of an adult volunteer or zookeeper. Erlen-Kids need to volunteer for a minimum of four after- noons per month. In return, they learn about the behavior and proper care and handling of the animals. The kids acquire a unique bond of love and trust with the animals, which is a tremendous reward and confidence booster in itself.
