In Basel, this is always met with the whirring sounds and flashing lights of November 2014 Volume 3 Issue 3 the rides, not to mention the screams of thrill-seeking ride-goers, as Basel’s Herbstmesse (Fall Fair) graces our city’s squares.     § 16.2 Christian Research Associations Page 1 he real beginning of the various Christian research organisations which flourished across the Western world at the end T of the 20th century and early 21st century was in the 1960s, a little behind the secular market research world which had its tentative start in the 1930s, but only really got under way in the 1950s after the War ended. Christian research organisations started through a manager in an aeronautical engineering company in Los Angeles in the late 1940s, who began to feel the Lord calling him into full-time service in the early 1960s. Accordingly Edward Dayton, always abbreviated to Ed, attended Fuller Theological Seminary and then began to ask questions such as, “Who is applying management theory and practice to Christian organisations?” Given the opportunity by his friend Ted Engstrom, the long-serving Vice President of World Vision (WV), to take a room in his Los Angeles office, Ed did so, and over the course of the next year (1967) began an organisation called Missions Advanced Research and Communications Centre (abbreviated to MARC, with one C, not two, at the end). Over the next few years, under Ed’s influence, MARC expanded. He led it to develop in three broad areas: !He began to research the Christian populations of many countries, initially those in which World Vision was working, updating and extending the work previously done by Sir Kenneth Grubb and others published in the World Christian Handbook in 1957, 1962 and 1968; !He began suggesting that mission agencies move away from the old “comity” arrangement whereby one particular mission would be primarily responsible for evangelism and Christian community work in a given area or country, to the concept of working with particular groups of people; !He began helping Christian organisations with management theory and ran courses on subjects like Time Management.

    Kate Scally ENG 252 12/29/06 Theatre in England Journal 2 Wicked By Stephen Schwartz 12/29/06 As soon as you step onto the street where the musical Wicked is playing, you start to experience the stunning visual effects of the show. The sparkling lights are the first things that catch your eye. The large, neon green sign on the building casts a garish glow on everyone’s face, literally turning each person green. Before audience members even enter the theater, they are exposed to the idea of green people; this makes it easier to sympathize with a non-traditional, green heroine. This effect is just the first in a long line of effects which help to create the visually stunning experience that is Wicked. This “razzle dazzle” aspect begins with the lights outside and continues as you enter the lobby. On one side, a wall of green and pink t-shirts and souvenirs looms, while on the other side the bar sells neon green and pink drinks. I found it amazing that the show’s visual effects begin before the actual show. This seemingly exaggerated use of glitz and glamour fits in with a major theme of the musical—the use of and conceptions surrounding appearances. This theme, a major one for fairy tales, is skillfully employed. Elphaba, also known as the “Wicked Witch of the West” is a green woman whose color foreshadows her eventual rebellion and expulsion from society, while Glinda, known as “Glinda the Good Witch,” appears beautiful, nice, and popular, but in reality is shallow and cowardly.

Building on inherent compatibilities between jazz and flamenco, a generation of versatile Spanish musicians has synthesized the two genres in a wide variety of forms, creating in the process a coherent new idiom that can be regarded as a sort of mainstream flamenco jazz style. A few of these performers, such as pianist Chano Domínguez and wind player Jorge Pardo, have achieved international acclaim and become luminaries on the Euro-jazz scene. Indeed, flamenco jazz has become something of a minor bandwagon in some circles, with that label often being adopted, with or without rigor, as a commercial rubric to promote various sorts of productions (while conversely, some of the genre’s top performers are indifferent to the label 1). Meanwhile, however, as increasing numbers of gifted performers enter the field and cultivate genuine and substantial syntheses of flamenco and jazz, the new genre has come to merit scholarly attention for its inherent vitality, richness, and significance in the broader jazz world.
