In this paper additions to the revision of the western Palaearctic species of the genus Cryptus (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Cryptinae) by ROSSEM (1969) are given. In addition the Cryptus species from Central Asia and from Mongolia are revised. New keys to the species occuring in the western Palaearctic region and in Central Asia as well as in Mongolia are provided. For most species new localities are listed. The following new species are described: Cryptus adversus nov.sp. (Kazakhstan), Cryptus borderai nov.sp. (Spain, Italy), Cryptus dentipropodealis nov.sp. (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Macedonia, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco), Cryptus duoalbimaculatus nov.sp. (Iran, Turkmenistan, Egypt), Cryptus infinitus nov.sp. (Mongolia), Cryptus informis nov.sp. SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV CHOKAN OF WORKS SELECTED SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV Pioneering Ethnographer and Historian of the Great Steppe When Chokan Valikhanov died of tuberculosis in 1865, aged only 29, the Russian academician Nikolai Veselovsky described his short life as ‘a meteor flashing across the field of oriental studies’. Set against his remarkable output of official reports, articles and research into the history, culture and ethnology of Central Asia, and more important, his Kazakh people, it remains an entirely appropriate accolade. Born in 1835 into a wealthy and powerful Kazakh clan, he was one of the first ‘people of the steppe’ to receive a Russian education and military training. Soon after graduating from Siberian Cadet Corps at Omsk, he was taking part in reconnaissance missions deep into regions of Central Asia that had seldom been visited by outsiders. His famous mission to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, which began in June 1858 and lasted for more than a year, saw him in disguise as a Tashkent mer- chant, risking his life to gather vital information not just on current events, but also on the ethnic make-up, geography, flora and fauna of this unknown region. Journeys to Kuldzha, to Issyk-Kol and to other remote and unmapped places quickly established his reputation, even though he al- ways remained inorodets – an outsider to the Russian establishment. Nonetheless, he was elected to membership of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and spent time in St Petersburg, where he was given a private audience by the Tsar. Wherever he went he made his mark, striking up strong and lasting friendships with the likes of the great Russian explorer and geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tian-Shansky and the writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky. -

Strategic Framework for Free Economic Zones and Industrial Parks in the Kyrgyz Republic
Strategic Framework for Free Economic Zones and Industrial Parks in the Kyrgyz Republic Free economic zones that can be transformed into clusters of highly competitive traded firms can contribute significantly to industrial diversification and regional development of the Kyrgyz Republic. This strategic framework outlines strategies and policies for leveraging them to enhance productivity and promote regional development. The framework involves six pillars for integrating free economic zones and industrial parks: (i) using a sustainable development program with a mix of bottom–up and top–down approaches; (ii) enhancing the investment climate by ensuring the development of sound legal and regulatory frameworks, better institutional designs, and coordination; (iii) using a proactive approach with global value chains and upgrading along them by strengthening domestic capabilities; (iv) forming regional and cross-border value chains; (v) developing a sound implementation strategy; and (vi) establishing a sound monitoring and evaluation framework. About the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program The Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program is a partnership of 11 member countries and development partners working together to promote development through cooperation, leading to accelerated economic growth and poverty reduction. Social and ecological aspects of the water resources management of the transboundary rivers of Central Asia PARVIZ NORMATOV Tajik National University, 17 Rudaki Ave, Dushanbe, 734025, Tajikistan [email protected] Abstract The Zeravshan River is a transboundary river whose water is mainly used for irrigation of agricultural lands of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Sufficiently rich hydropower resources in upstream of the Zeravshan River characterize the Republic of Tajikistan. Continuous monitoring of water resources condition is necessary for planning the development of this area taking into account hydropower production and irrigation needs. Water quality of Zeravshan River is currently one of the main problems in the relationship between the Republics of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and it frequently triggers conflict situations between the two countries. In most cases, the problem of water quality of the Zeravshan River is related to river pollution by wastewater of the Anzob Mountain-concentrating Industrial Complex (AMCC) in Tajikistan. In this paper results of research of chemical and bacteriological composition of the Zeravshan River waters are presented. The minimum impact of AMCC on quality of water of the river was experimentally established. Key words transboundary; Central Asia; water reservoir; pollution; heavy metals; water quality INTRODUCTION Water resources in the Aral Sea Basin, whose territory belongs to five states, are mostly used for irrigation and hydropower engineering. These water users require river runoff to be regulated with different regimes. The aim of the hydropower engineering is the largest power production and, accordingly, the utilization of the major portion of annual runoff of rivers in the winter, the coldest season of the year. -
