In order to encourage as many students as possible to apply, I made it a point to create an application process that is easy and simple. I have also created a schedule spanning eight days that is varied, stimulating, and fun. We are delighted to partner with David Kim to offer the world of orchestral music a place for musical and spiritual refreshment. We are thrilled to have you join us for this adventure in world-class music making. This overview book is designed to give you a sense of what it will be like to be a participant. It includes the details of what the audition process will look like, what it will be like to be a student in the summit, and the overarching goals we have for this year. It is our pleasure and commitment to serve you as best we can in providing an exceptional place and experience for artistic challenge and growth. –Dr. Benjamin Harding Dean, School of Music, Cairn University -2- Ages of Participants We are accepting auditions and applications from students aged 15 and up until May 1, 2018. Please note that participants will be divided into two tracks: High School College/Post College Private lessons Private lessons Masterclasses Materclasses Faculty recitals Faculty recital Student concert Student recital String quartet reading session Professional photo shoots Preparing for youth orchestra and college auditions Professional development sessions College application seminar String quartet reading session Faculty testimonies and workshops Resumé seminar Bow rehairs Mock auditions Chin and shoulder rest consulting Faculty testimonies and workshops Philadelphia sightseeing Bow rehairs Yoga classes Chin and shoulder rest consulting Philadelphia sightseeing Yoga classes These tracks are designed so that participants can interact with faculty and their peers at an age- appropriate level. The Audition and Application Process We want to make auditioning and applying to the summit as easy as possible. Simply visit our audition page here cairn.edu/davidkim/apply, fill out the simple application, and upload your video. Auditions will be competitive, recruiting students at a high level of playing for both tracks. We would like to see a video recording of the exposition of the first movement from a concerto (no cadenza) and a contrasting solo work. No accompaniment, please. We are expecting that the video be made by using a smartphone, tablet or another everyday technological device. We will begin accepting applications and audition videos on January 15, 2018. We will not accept applications or audition videos after May 1, 2018. -3- Tuition Tuition for the eight-day summit is $1,000. Please note that merit-based financial aid may be awarded. These merit-based scholarships will be based on the audition and application. Inquiries for financial aid can be sent to [email protected]. Tuition price includes the cost of housing. Day-rate tuition is $800 (no housing and limited meals). A $100 deposit is due by April 1, 2018. Payments can be made online at cairn.edu/davidkim/apply. Room and Board All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for the week will be provided by the Institute. A continental breakfast will be available in the dorm facility each morning, and lunch and dinner will be held in the Furman Dining Commons. Room & board includes a single occupancy room in Heritage Hall on Cairn’s campus. Transportation while at the Summit Cairn University will provide all local transportation services for students during the summit. Transportation can also be provided to the airport at the conclusion of the summit. We will outline that possibility in the acceptance email and make appropriate arrangements.
