Nicholson, Jack’s namesake and maybe even his father, a soft little dapper Irishman in glasses. He kept neatly combed what was left of his red hair and had long ago separated from Jack’s mother, their high school romance gone the way of any available drink. They told Jack that John had once been a great ballplayer and that he decorated store windows, all five Steinbachs in Asbury Park, though the only place Jack ever saw this man was in the bar, day-drinking apricot brandy and Hennessy, shot after shot, quietly waiting for the mercy to kick in. -

January 7, 1982: * Presidential counselor Edwin Meese III reads a statement that reverses President Reagan's pre-election stand against the registration of 18-year-old males for a possible future military draft. * The Winter 1982 Consumer Electronics Show begins in Las Vegas, Nevada. While a year earlier the RCA VideoDisc system had been one of the most prominent introductions, at the 1982 show the VHD VideoDisc holds the spotlight with a large display space sporting the slogan "There's More to See on VHD." Other notable video-related introductions include the Technicolor CVC mini-cassette VCR system, the first tubeless consumer video camera, and the first Pioneer LaserDisc player with CX noise reduction. Oscar-Winning 'Heaven Can Wait' Production Designer Dies
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2016 French artist Guillaume Bottazzi works on a large-scale painting above Jourdan Square near the European insti- tutions in Brussels yesterday. —AFP Oscar-winning 'Heaven Can Wait' production designer dies aul Sylbert, a prolific production designer who won an Oscar for his work on Warren Beatty's "Heaven Can PWait," died yesterday at age 88 outside of Philadelphia, producer Hawk Koch said Wednesday. A Brooklyn native and Korean War veteran, Sylbert and his late twin brother Richard Sylbert became some of the most sought-after production designers in the business fol- lowing arts school, working together on Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd" and "Baby Doll." Richard Sylbert, who won Oscars for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and "Dick Tracy" in addition to working on "Chinatown" and "Shampoo" died in 2002 of cancer. Paul Sylbert's career would span over four decades, during which he worked on films like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Kramer vs Kramer," "Blow Out," and "The Prince of Tides," for which he scored another Oscar nomination. He also designed for the New York City Opera Company, wrote and directed the 1971 film "The Steagle" and penned a book about his experiences in Hollywood called "Final Cut." Recently, he was on the faculty of the Film & Media Arts Department of his alma mater Temple University in Philadelphia. Koch, who worked with Sylbert on five films, said "Paul was one of a kind. He was as smart and well-read as anyone I have ever come in contact with, and he was respected by all that knew him. -

SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. How to Use this Guide Entries are grouped by titles of plays and listed chronologically within the group by release/broadcast date. -

Adg Awards Signs Bmw As Title Sponsor of 17Th Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards, Feb
ADG AWARDS SIGNS BMW AS TITLE SPONSOR OF 17TH ANNUAL ART DIRECTORS GUILD EXCELLENCE IN PRODUCTION DESIGN AWARDS, FEB. 2 LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3 -- The Art Directors Guild (ADG) has signed BMW as the exclusive title sponsor of its upcoming 2013 ADG 17th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards Presented by BMW, it was announced today by Thomas A. Walsh, ADG President and Awards Producers Greg Grande and Raf Lydon. In addition to naming rights, the agreement entitles BMW to have a major presence at the event. The Guild’s coveted honorary Lifetime Achievement Award, and event name, will be identified this year as “presented by” BMW”. DesignworksUSA, a subsidiary of the BMW Group, will design the “Lifetime Achievement Award. BMW will integrate its products into the February 2, 2013 awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, by transporting presenters, displaying automobiles on- site and revealing a clip of BMW in film. Table and media sponsorships of the ADG Awards will continue as in the past. “The ADG is honored and delighted to align with the prestigious brand of BMW. Our Guild and their company share a passion for design which makes them a perfect partner for our awards” said Walsh. The ADG Lifetime Achievement Award Presented by BMW, recognizes a production designer for their body of work, and will be announced in the near future. Past recipients of Lifetime Achievement are Production Designers Sir Ken Adam, Robert Boyle, Albert Brenner, Henry Bumstead, Roy Christopher, Stuart Craig, William J. Creber, John Mansbridge, Terence Marsh, Harold Michelson, Jan Scott, Richard Sylbert, Dean Tavoularis and Tony Walton.
