This dissertation discusses film melodrama in its visual, gestural, and aural manifestations. My focus is on the persistence of melodrama and the traces it leaves on post-World War II Italian cinema: from the Neorealist canon of the 1940s to works that engage with the psychological and physical, private, and collective traumas after the experience of a totalitarian regime (Cavani’s Il portiere di notte, 1974), to postmodern Viscontian experiments set in a 21st-century capitalist society (Guadagnino’s Io sono l’amore, 2009). The aural dimension is fundamental as an opening to the epistemology of each film. I pay particular attention to the presence of operatic music – as evoked directly or through semiotic displacement involving the film’s aesthetic and expressive figures – and I acknowledge the existence of a long legacy of practical and imaginative influences, infiltrations and borrowings between the screen and the operatic stage in the Italian cinematographic tradition. -

The Jew as Dangerous Other in Early Italian Cinema, 1910-1914 Gerwyn Glyn Owen 2014 A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film Studies School of Creative Studies and Media Bangor University ii Abstract My thesis examines imagery of the Jew in four Italian silent films: Il mercante di Venezia (Gerolamo Lo Savio, 1910), L’Inferno (Francesco Bertolini, Adolfo Padovan, Giuseppe de Liguoro, 1911), Quo Vadis? (Enrico Guazzoni, 1913), and Cabiria (Giovanni Pastrone, 1914). The thesis deconstructs this filmic imagery and traces its history back to medieval and Renaissance representations of the Jew. This process reveals connections between traditional anti-Jewish ideologies and the moving images of early Italian cinema. In so doing, my thesis demonstrates that there is a powerful relationship between the socio-political and religious discourses that were in circulation before the First World War in Italy and the presence of anti-Semitic stereotyping in these films. While Dante’s reception and his transformation into a cultural authority have traditionally been investigated from the point of view of the Commedia, I argue that these lyric anthologies provide a new perspective for understanding how the physical act of rewriting Dante’s poems in various combinations and with other texts has shaped what I call after Foucault the Dante function” and consecrated Dante as an author from the Middle Ages to Modernity. The study of these lyric anthologies widens our understanding of the process of Dante’s canonization as an author and, thus, as an authority (auctor & auctoritas), advancing our awareness of authors both as entities that generate power and that are generated by power. -

Its main objective is to analyze gender and placemaking practices in an ensemble of films, addressing these practices on a symbolic level. The main argument of the article is that the way gender and migrant roles were conceived in the Italian Neorealist and New Migrant Cinema was based on the intention to challenge certain stereotypes characterizing the understanding of national identity and ‘otherness’. The article presents how the roles of borgatari and women function as devices of reconceptualization of Italy’s identity, providing a fertile terrain for problematizing the relationship between migration studies, urban studies and gender studies. Special attention is paid to how migrants are related to the reconceptualization of Italy’s national narrations. The Neorealist model is understood here as a precursor of the narrative strategies that one encounters in numerous films belonging to the New Migrant cinema in Italy. The article also explores how certain aspects of more contemporary studies of migrant cinema in Italy could illuminate our understanding of Neorealist cinema and its relation to national narratives. -

Vecoli ha segnalato quindici anni fa (An Inter-Ethnic Perspective on American Immigration History, «Mid-America», LXXV, 1993, pp. 223-235), la dimensione comparativa rappresenta un approccio poco praticato negli studi sui gruppi etnici in generale e sullo studio delle migrazioni italiane in particolare. Sebbene nel frattempo sia indubbiamente cresciuto il numero delle monografie che hanno confrontato l’esperienza italiana negli Stati Uniti con quella di altre minoranze in questo stesso Paese, al di là dei tentativi di sintesi complessive sulla cosiddetta «diaspora» italiana nelle svariate terre di destinazione restano ancora quantitativamente esigue le ricerche che hanno paragonato la presenza italiana in società differenti sull’esempio del lavoro di Samuel L. Baily sugli italiani a Buenos Aires e New York nei decenni tra l’inizio dell’emigrazione di massa e lo scoppio della Prima guerra mondiale (Immigrants in the Lands of Promise, Ithaca, NY, Cornell University Press, 1999).
