This dissertation discusses film melodrama in its visual, gestural, and aural manifestations. My focus is on the persistence of melodrama and the traces it leaves on post-World War II Italian cinema: from the Neorealist canon of the 1940s to works that engage with the psychological and physical, private, and collective traumas after the experience of a totalitarian regime (Cavani’s Il portiere di notte, 1974), to postmodern Viscontian experiments set in a 21st-century capitalist society (Guadagnino’s Io sono l’amore, 2009). The aural dimension is fundamental as an opening to the epistemology of each film. I pay particular attention to the presence of operatic music – as evoked directly or through semiotic displacement involving the film’s aesthetic and expressive figures – and I acknowledge the existence of a long legacy of practical and imaginative influences, infiltrations and borrowings between the screen and the operatic stage in the Italian cinematographic tradition. In doing so, I challenge the theoretical bias that associates melodrama with a reliance on grandiose theatrical settings, clichéd symphonic soundtracks, Manichean narrative tropes, redundancy and excess. My contribution to the understanding of cinematic melodrama encompasses two main dimensions. First, I show how the melos in films is crucial to the epistemological structure of every film, rather than a separate or ancillary entity. Whereas realist cinema and melodrama are usually regarded as opposites or antagonists, realism in fact relies on melodramatic aural and gestural figures to fashion its reality effects. Wikipedia says: The name "Bollywood" is derived from Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry. However, unlike Hollywood, Bollywood does not exist as a physical place. Bollywood films are mostly musicals, and are expected to contain catchy music in the form of song-and-dance numbers woven into the script. Indian audiences expect full value for their money. Songs and dances, love triangles, comedy and dare-devil thrills are all mixed up in a three-hour- long extravaganza with an intermission. Such movies are called masala films, after the Hindi word for a spice mixture. Like masalas, these movies are a mixture of many things such as action, comedy, romance and so on. Melodrama and romance are common ingredients to Bollywood films. They frequently employ formulaic ingredients such as star-crossed lovers and angry parents, love triangles, family ties, sacrifice, corrupt politicians, kidnappers, conniving villains, courtesans with hearts of gold, long-lost relatives and siblings separated by fate, dramatic reversals of fortune, and convenient coincidences. What has UX and Agile got to do with Bollywood? As a Designer I faced tremendous challenges while moving into an Agile environment. While drowning the sorrows with designers from other organizations I came to realize that they too face similar challenges. This inspired me to explore further into what makes designers sad, what makes them suck and what are the ways in which they can contribute more in an Agile environment.

    GIANNI HAVER "To Rely on Verdi's Harmonies and not on Wagnerian Force." The Reception of ltalian Cinema in Switzerland, 1 939-45 Adopting an approach that appeals to the study of reception means em- phasising an analysis of the discourses called forth by films rather than an analysis of the films themselves. To be analysed, these discourses must have left certain traces, although it is of course difficult to know what two spectators actually said to one another on leaving a cinema in L939. The most obvious, visible, and regular source of information are film reviews in the daily press. Reception studies have, moreover, often privileged such sources, even if some scholars have drawn attention to the lack of com- pliance between the expression of a cultured minority - the critics - and the consumption of mass entertainment (see Daniel 1972, 19; Lindeperg 1997, L4). L. *y view, the press inevitably ranks among those discourses that have to be taken into consideratiorL but it is indispensable to confront it with others. Two of these discourses merit particular attentiory namely that of the authorities, as communicated through the medium of censor- ship, and that of programming, which responds to rules that are chiefly commercial. To be sure, both are the mouthpieces of cultural, political, and economic elites. Accordingly, their discourses are govemed by the ruling classes, especially with regard to the topic and period under investiga- tion here: the reception of Italian cinema in Switzerland between 1939 and 1945. The possibilities of expressing opposition were practically ruled out, or at least muted and kept under control.

    Sanctum 33 1917 a college man wrote some words to be sung to *he tune of an old English hunting song; but both these attempts, while meritorious, lacked something or other that would give a song enduring popularity among the old grads and underclass men. Some telepathic message about this state of affairs must have crossed the Allegheny mountains in the direction of New York, for just before the school year opened Joseph Breil, whom Pitts- burgh and the world knows as the composer of the music for "Intolerance", "The Birth of a Nation", "Cabiria", and other big motion-picture plays, and as the author of a successful grand opera, " The Legend ", was inspired to write as follows to the President of the University : " Back in the middle eighties, in the days of Fathers Power, Griffin, McCabe, Gross, Dangelzer and others, I used to trudge up the Bluff every day to the Pittsburgh College, to get my 'education.' Since then I have developed into a composer of some distinction and am known practically over the world, wherever better music is cultivated. "I am sending you a song of mine; perhaps one of your poets could arrange a text to it, and it could be adopted as the Duquesne University Hymn. I would be pleased to learn that such a thing has been done. " Sincerely yours, "Joseph Carl Breil." It so happens that the new music fits the text sung before the war, without submitting the latter to any fundamental remodeling, and the University will have its wish. The new hymn is the result of the combination.
