Fraser and Caitlin, two American teenagers living on an American military base in , develop a beautifully unique friendship over the course of a scorching hot summer whilst attempting to carve out their own place in a complex world. When Fraser arrives at the base with his mother Sarah (Chloë Sevigny) and her partner Maggie (Alice Braga) he finds it hard to adjust to his new environment, often feeling lost and alienated. He soon befriends Caitlin, who has lived there with her family for some time and is the most beautiful girl on the base. Her father, knowingly or not, raised her as a tomboy doing the kinds of things that he perhaps would have done with the son he always wanted. As Caitlin approaches womanhood she begins to doubt the way she sees herself in the world, questioning her own identity. This new friendship between Fraser and Caitlin will provide them both with a chance to discover themselves, their desires and the world beyond the regimented lifestyle of the base. Alongside this intensely personal journey, the war in Afghanistan marches on with its own implications for everyone. Fraser and Caitlin’s journey will conclude with one final adventure. As the pair head to a larger city filled with opportunity, they find freedom from convention and can live the lives they chose with unwavering support from one another. EPISODES EPISODE 1 14-year-old Fraser moves to Italy from New York when Sarah, one of his two mothers, is promoted to the rank of Colonel on an American military base in Veneto, Italy. He gets to know a group of young people on the base, and they invite him along to the beach, where he notices fourteen-year-old Caitlin. That same evening, Fraser sees Caitlin wearing men’s clothing. He decides to follow her to a bar, where he sees her flirting with an Italian girl.

EPISODE 2 Caitlin is talking to her boyfriend Sam about her problems when she gets her first period. This throws her into considerable turmoil. When she gets home, she discusses it with her father, but things between them cool as a result of her emerging femininity. We find out that Caitlin noticed Fraser in the bar where she flirted with the Italian girl. In the days that follow, she avoids him. But Fraser lets her know he is on her side by sending a gift of men’s clothes to her house.

EPISODE 3 Caitlin and Fraser spend more and more time together, talking about their sexuality and gender identity, which neither of them can seem to label. Together they watch videos of F-to-M transsexuals. Sam splits up with Caitlin but she is not bothered. She decides to pretend to be in a relationship with Fraser. Meanwhile, one of Fraser’s mothers, Maggie, seems to be growing fond of Caitlin’s mother. Fraser feels a strong attraction for a young major called Jonathan; so much so he even feels a pang of jealousy when he sees him dancing with his mother Sarah at a party.

EPISODE 4 During a paintball game Danny, Caitlin’s brother, and Sam turn on Fraser. Meanwhile, Caitlin manages to win the game by stealing the flag from the rival team; she even manages to beat twenty-something Craig, a soldier Danny is good friends with. Craig is about to be sent off on a mission and his girlfriend, Valentina, is very upset so the group organises a last- minute wedding. Afterwards, they throw an improvised wedding party in an abandoned villa. During the reception, Caitlin tackles Craig for having “treated her like a girl”. The next day, Craig leaves for Afghanistan.

EPISODE 5 Caitlin has a date with Giulia, the girl she flirted with when she was dressed as a boy. She is worried and asks Fraser for help; he tries to reassure her, but Caitlin wants Fraser to cut her hair off so she looks more like a man. When they are on their date, the girls kiss; Giulia confesses to Caitlin that she has known she was a girl all along. Caitlin feels awkward, and ends up running off. By chance, Fraser bumps into Jonathan at the cinema. They have a long conversation, and Fraser feels increasingly attracted to him.

EPISODE 6 Caitlin has been grounded for cutting off her hair. Over the weekend her father takes her out hunting with him. Richard tries to patch things up with her, but the chasm between them is growing wider. Meanwhile Fraser is spending even more time with Jonathan: the two go off on a trip together to visit the tomb of the unknown soldier, after which they have dinner together. Caitlin opens up to Sarah about the idea of changing sex. Sarah is supportive, but Caitlin doesn’t know how to broach the subject with her father.

EPISODE 7 Craig is killed in Afghanistan when a bomb goes off. At the funeral Richard, Caitlin’s father, blames Sarah out loud for Craig’s death. In the meantime Caitlin is drawn back again to her ex, Craig’s brother, Sam. Craig’s friends go for a drink in his honour, in the villa where they held the wedding party. Sarah finds out about Maggie’s relationship with Caitlin’s mother; she has the girl’s family transferred to Chicago.

EPISODE 8 Caitlin is packing her bags before moving to Chicago when Fraser suggests that they sneak off to a concert together in Bologna, a city neither has visited. While they are trying to hitch a lift, Fraser meets a boy called Luca. Over the course of the evening Fraser and Caitlin are separated, Fraser sharing a kiss with Luca and Caitlin with a girl. When Caitlin suddenly decides to escape the concert for home, Fraser leaves Luca to find her. The series ends on a note of youthful promise as the pair choose each other, running through the streets of this new city together, filled with hope for their future.
