My Dear Friends, Well, so far it has been a questionable year. It is not only the matter of the coronavirus but of the weather. I mean we are in the middle of April and we are still getting snow showers! I realize that we live in Michigan but even the birds do not know what to do with this stuff. Now, having said that, I would like to share with you a few things that are on my mind. The first thing is the issue of peoples’ live versus the economy. I realize that both are very important. I also know that you cannot divorce one from another. However, in that marriage, lives have to be the priority. This is why I cannot understand the Governor of Georgia this past week saying some- thing to the effect that the economy is more important than lives. I never thought that I would hear something from that from a supposed leader. This is just like one of the pseudo television doctors saying two weeks ago that we should just reopen the schools and accept that 23% of the children would probably die. I realize that we are in the midst of something that we have never seen before but where have our values gone? I want to get back to work the same as everyone else. Yes, I do know people who are at the end of their rope without having an income to pay the bills, health care coverage to protect their families and a sense of worthlessness because they cannot do anything to protect their loved ones. Being a priest does not separate you from being a human being. In fact being a priest makes you more sensitive to these problems because you see them every day in some form if you are a part of your people and care about them. We are going to get through all of this! This nation has gotten through many things that challenged us to the enth degree. What about the Depression, World Wars 1 and 2, Ebola, H1N1, 9/11 and a few other things? Each and every time we have encountered and been faced with something of this nature we not only came through it, we became stronger because of it. This is because we are who we are, Americans, and with the grace and help of God and each other. A true leader is someone who not only says this but who honestly believes it. It would be nice if we had more true leaders and fewer talkers. How can anyone actually say that the economy is more important than life and that losing 23% of our children is acceptable? This gets me to another issue. Everyone is asking where will we be when we get through this. I have a better question. Who will we be when, in fact, we do get through all of this? Having invested so much of ourselves in protecting our loved ones by listening to the doctors, scientists and true leaders by quarantiningourselves, keeping a safe distance from one another and being patient, the issue is not where will we be but who will we be. What will we have learned? The world will never be quite the same. What Page 2 St. Peter Parish, Mount Clemens about all of the technology we have been forced to use? Eventually the motherhouse sent 1600 Nuns to more than 100 schools across Metropolitan Detroit and various states. 1870, Pastor Rev. Camillus Maes (1869-1871) opened the first parochial school here at St. Peter Parish. Rev. Maes asked the IHM for help teaching the 80 students enrolled in the school. The IHM agreed, provided the school be named after our Blessed Mother. Three IHM sisters traveled to Mt. Clemens by canoe. By the mid-1920s, there were 19 IHM Sisters teaching at St. Mary School. During 1928-1929 Mt. Clemens was growing, so a new Catholic Church, St. Louis church and school was opened. Three 3 IHM nuns were re-assigned to the new school.

As a public-school alumnus, I have no memories of Catholic school except during my First Communion Catechism, but I enjoy listening to my friends who attended Catholic school; they each have their fond memories of Nuns. Along with these stories, many have made-up names for their various Nun- teachers. Perhaps you have your favorite Nun names and stories. This ‘nun-names’ humor gave rise to a song by a Sacred Heart alumnus Thom Sharp, a comedian and actor, with his 1970 hit, “They Don’t Make Nun Names Like That No More.”

My family takes pride in having an IHM Sister in our family. My Aunt Elmyra received her call to service when my grandfather was very ill. Elmyra prayed to God for her father’s healing and promised God that if He would heal her father, she would become a Nun. God granted her prayer and she joined the Immaculate Heart of Mary sisters. “… as my Father has sent me, so I send you.” John 20:21. Sister Elmyra returned to our Lord in 2012 and our Pastor, Father Mike Cooney officiated at her funeral here at St. Peter Church.

“… One nation, under God…” The Immaculate Heart of Mary played an indirect part in our Pledge of Allegiance to include a reference to God. The ‘Pledge’ originated on Columbus Day in 1893 with no reference to God. In 1951 the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus voted to include ‘under God’ at their meetings of the Fourth Degree of the Knights. In 1952, copies of this resolution were sent to the President of the United States, the Vice President and both houses of Congress. The resolution was introduced to Congress by MI Congressman Louis C. Rabaut. The resolution was adopted by both houses of Congress and signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower on Flag Day, June 14, 1954. Congressman Rabaut’s family included three IHM sisters and Jesuit Priest Dermott Rabaut.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and our concern for the health and safety of our children and volunteers, we will not be able to host a Vacation Bible School (VBS) week this year. This was a very hard decision to make but we feel that it is in the best interest for everyone involved. We look forward to VBS 2021. What’s New on New Street: SVdP Update Well, the week of April 13th was a typical spring Michigan-weather week. The SVdP volunteers were sheltered from the rain and snow under the tent, but the wind was brutal. But the weather did not stop our neighbors-in-need from driving by to pick up a couple days of groceries.

As we thought would happen, the number of neighbors using the pantry has steadily increased as many of those who are employed lost a second or maybe third weekly paycheck. With the rush to file for unemployment benefits, the system has been overloaded with applicants which has delayed many from receiving relief.

While the number of needy is increasing, the number of generous, loving parishioners is also increasing. We have been blessed with cash, checks and donated food from our Our St. Vincent de Paul Society St. Peter’s family, as well as from neighbors who drive up with is still open to serve our donations for which they’d like to remain anonymous. neighbors in need. Christian Stewardship: A Way of Life Putting the Eucharist into

Action: A Disciple’s Response An encounter with Jesus is at the heart of our Christian journey, just as it was for those on their way to Emmaus. But that encounter is not the end. After we have encountered the Lord, we must remember this encounter as the source of our life and witness. In addition to encounter and grateful remembrance, we must give witness to our experience of the saving love of God in Christ Jesus. This is true even when we don’t feel prepared or seem to have all the answers. Encounter. Grateful remembrance. Joyful witness. It might seem overwhelming. The question we might have the tendency to ask ourselves is: How can we do more? But it’s not the first step. Our first call as Catholic Christian stewards or missionary disciples isn’t necessarily to do more. Our first call is to be more. What does that mean? We need to build a foundation in Christ; first and foremost, by becoming a people of prayer. Too often our contemporary world is skeptical, distrustful and hostile toward prayer. Many struggle to find the value and effectiveness of prayer, especially when confronted by human brokenness, tragedy and violence. Appeals to prayer can be interpreted as inauthentic: “But it doesn’t’ do anything.” We aren’t asked to choose between prayer and action – As Catholic Christian stewards, we know that’s a false dichotomy. Rather, we are called to make prayer the root of our action. Mother Teresa was a great example of this. She spent an hour every day praying before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. She made it part of the Rule of Life for all Missionaries of Charity. When asked why they took this precious time for prayer, especially when there were so many practical demands on their time and energy, she ex- plained: “because we find that through our daily holy hour our love for Jesus becomes more intimate, our love for each other more understanding, and our love for the poor more compassionate.” In the story of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42), Jesus reminds Martha that being with Him is what matters more than what- ever tasks we may have to face. The Martha in each of us needs to recognize that being in communion with God in prayerful contem- plation comes first. When we have listened attentively to Jesus’ words, our solidarity with others will be more profound. To be missionary disciples/Catholic Christian stewards, we have to remain attentive to these two interrelated dimensions of our Christian journey. “(W)ithout prayer all our activity risks being fruitless and our message empty. Jesus wants evangelizers who proclaim the good news not only with words, but above all by a life transfigured by God’s presence” (The Joy of the Gospel, 259). Although we are following a truth when committing ourselves to a stewardship way of life or becoming a missionary disciple, it does not mean that we do not have a difficult time of it. Truth does not make the journey easier. It just makes it worthwhile.

So this week, let’s pray. Listen to what God is calling you to do and then do it.
