Thinking in Buddhism: Nagarjuna’s Middle Way 1994 Jonah Winters About this Book Any research into a school of thought whose texts are in a foreign language encounters certain difficulties in deciding which words to translate and which ones to leave in the original. It is all the more of an issue when the texts in question are from a language ancient and quite unlike our own. Most of the texts on which this thesis are based were written in two languages: the earliest texts of Buddhism were written in a simplified form of Sanskrit called Pali, and most Indian texts of Madhyamika were written in either classical or “hybrid” Sanskrit. Terms in these two languages are often different but recognizable, e.g. “dhamma” in Pali and “dharma” in Sanskrit. For the sake of coherency, all such terms are given in their Sanskrit form, even when that may entail changing a term when presenting a quote from Pali. Since this thesis is not intended to be a specialized research document for a select audience, terms have been translated whenever possible,even when the subtletiesof the Sanskrit term are lost in translation.In a research paper as limited as this, those subtleties are often almost irrelevant.For example, it is sufficient to translate “dharma” as either “Law” or “elements” without delving into its multiplicity of meanings in Sanskrit. Only four terms have been left consistently untranslated. “Karma” and “nirvana” are now to be found in any English dictionary, and so their translation or italicization is unnecessary. Similarly, “Buddha,” while literally a Sanskrit term meaning “awakened,” is left untranslated and unitalicized due to its titular nature and its familiarity. -

The research area for this investigation is Northeastern Thailand, colloquially known as Isan. Three ethnic communities were purposively selected to comprise the research populations. These were the Tai Korat of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Tai Khmer of Buriram Province and Tai Lao of Ubon Ratchatani Province. Data collection tools were basic survey, participant and non-participant observation, structured and non-structured interview, focus group discussion and workshop. Results show that there are two major groups of Buddhist temple murals in Isan: those depicting ancient culture and customs painted prior to 1957 and contemporary murals painted after 1957. For the most part, murals are found on the walls of the ubosot and the instruction halls of the temples. The objectives of mural paintings were to worship the lord Buddha, decorate the temples, provide education to community members and maintain historical records. -

Komponen lingkungan yang digambarkan pada panel relief dan menarik untuk dikaji, salah satunya adalah penggambaran tanaman pada relief. Tanaman merupakan salah satu elemen penting untuk menunjang kehidupan manusia pada masa lalu khususnya pada masa perkembangan Hindhu/ Buddha periode Jawa Tengah. Indentifikasi tanaman dapat dilakukan dengan pengamatan langsung. Setelah tanaman dapat diidentifikasi jenisnya maka konteks pengambaran tanaman berperan penting dalam menentukan kondisi lingkungan dimana tanaman tersebut tumbuh. Apabila ditarik pada masa kini, maka indentifikasi tanaman dan klasifikasi konteks penggambaran tanaman dapat bermanfaat dalam pelestarian lanskap budaya Kawasan Strategis Nasional Borobudur. ABSTRACT The relief story of Borobudur Temple and Mendut Temple is a depiction of the Old Javanese environment of the 8th-10th century CE. The environmental components depicted in the relief panels are interesting to study, one of which is the depiction of plants in relief. Plants are one of the important elements to support human life in the past, especially during the Hindu-Buddhist period of Central Java. Plants identification can be done by direct observation. After the plants can be identified, the context of plant propagation plays an important role in determining the environmental conditions in which the plants grow. -

Pendabuluan Sebagaimana telah ditegaskan oleh Soekmono dalam disertasinya yang berjudul Candi Fungsi dan Pengertiannya, candi adalah bangunan suci tempat pemujaan dewa. Candi melambangkan mahameru, yaitu gunung yang menjadi pusat alam semesta. Bangunan candi yang biasanya terdiri atas tiga bagian, yaitu kaki, tubuh, dan atap melambangkan tiga dunia, yaitu bhurloka, bhuwarloka, dan swarloka (Stutterheim, 1937: 245; Boechari, 1978: 13). Disebutkan dalam kitab Manasara-<;ilpa~astra -- kitab yang berisi aturan-aturan pembangunan kuil di India -- bahwa sebelum suatu bangunan kuil didirikan maka arsitek pendeta (sthapaka) dan arsitek perencana (sthapati) harus lebih dahulu menilai kondisi dan kemampuan lahan yang akan dijadikan tempat berdirinya bangunan suci tersebut (A chary a, 1993: 13-21; Kramrisch, 1946: 3-17; Mundardjito, 1993: 13). Kitab tersebut juga menerangkan bahwa lahan tempat berdirinya suatu bangunan kuil dinilai sangat tinggi, bahkan lebih penting dari bangunan suci itu sendiri (Mundardjito, 1993: 239). Peninggalan sejarah dan purbakala merupakan bukti otentik sebagai bentuk nyata yang menyimpan makna dan nilai-nilai luhur. Kini, sebagai bangsa yang sedang membangun sangat memerlukan hal tersebut sebagai sumber inspirasi untuk bertindak ke depan mencapai cita-cita bangsa. Buddhism is believed to be the era or the span of the earliest Buddhism growth in the region. Buddhism begins primarily and originally from Southeast Asia and from South Asia. In the early days of Buddhism, trade and trade in goods are investigated and distributed. Contrary to numerous studies of the expansion of Islam and Christianity, there seems to have been little interest in expanding Buddhism, which represents the third largest religion in the world in terms of numbers. Whereas in the case of the Cūḷasīhanāda-sutta and its parallels the debate situation involved a challenge to the Buddha’s disciples, in the case at present under examination the Buddha himself is challenged by the debater Saccaka, whom the texts introduce as a follower of the Jain tradition.
