Located in Bihar, India, near the site where the Buddha attained enlightenment, the centre of learning at Nalanda was a major hub for educational and intellectual exchange and the creation and dissemination of knowledge among Asian societies from the fifth to the twelfth centuries CE. It received students from across Asia, stimulated intellectual, scientific, and religious dialogues, and dispatched missionaries and scholars to the leading Buddhist centres of Asia. Later generations have called this centre of learning “Nalanda University” and described it as the world’s first educational institution of higher learning. When after an eight hundred year existence it was destroyed by an act of war, Nalanda lived on for another eight hundred years only in the shared cultural memory of India and Asian countries. It stood as a living symbol of a time of an inter connected Asia, of an Asia that did not then define itself against the paradigms of the emergent and monolithic model of higher education that holds sway today. Uncomfortable though this fact may be, what we have to accept today is faultlines created by the overwhelming force of multiple colonialisms—across Asian countries—that have altered the way we establish universities and has given to us today, what can only be decribed unflatteringly, as an imitative Asian model of the university. -

Theravada, which means “Way of the Elders,” is the earliest form of institutionalized Buddhism. It’s a style based primarily on talks the Buddha gave during his forty-six years of teaching. These talks were memorized and recited (before the internet, people could still do that) until they were finally written down a few hundred years later in Sri Lanka, where Theravada still dominates – and where there is also superb surf. In the US, Theravada mostly man- ifests through the teaching of Vipassana, particularly its popular meditation technique, mindfulness, the awareness of what is hap- pening now—thoughts, feelings, sensations—without judgment or attachment. Just as surfing is larger than, say, Kelly Slater, Theravada is larger than mindfulness. It’s a vast system of ethics and philoso- phies. That said, the essence of Theravada is using mindfulness to explore the Buddha’s first teaching, the Four Noble Truths, which go something like this: 1. Life is stressful. 2. Our constant desires make it stressful. 3. Freedom is possible. 4. Revisiting the Past through Virtual Reconstruction: The Case of the Grand Monuments of Paharpur, Bangladesh Md Mizanur Rashid Hafizur Rahaman (International Islamic University Malaysia) (National University of Singapore) This study aims at developing a virtual model of the lost architecture of the Buddhist Monastery of Sompur Mahavihara in Paharpur, Bangladesh. The eighth-century monastery is one of the earliest examples of monumental architecture in Bengal and in 1985 its ruins were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the very discovery of its ruins the monument drew the attention of architectural historians of South and Southeast Asia because of its unique architectural features and strategic location in space and time. The monument’s architecture, however, is scantily doc- umented, because after a millennium of amnesia first-hand resources are unavailable. The archi- tectural historian’s main sources are therefore the fragmentary archaeological remains, literary evidence, and epigraphic records. This study attempts to develop a virtual model of Sompur Ma- havihara that can accommodate different contesting narratives regarding its architecture. It looks into history in a dynamic way and uses virtual reconstruction as a flexible tool to reconstruct the lost monument. The aim of this paper is therefore twofold. First, it develops a methodological framework for retrieving and commemorating both tangible and intangible aspects of the monastery, perusing a critical theoretical construct, and then applies this knowledge to elaborate a conjectural virtual reconstruction. Second, it presents an online interactive platform that was created to collect pub- lic comments and contributions on the past culture and history of Sompur Mahavihara, so as to reinvent and renew the previous model. -

The research area for this investigation is Northeastern Thailand, colloquially known as Isan. Three ethnic communities were purposively selected to comprise the research populations. These were the Tai Korat of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Tai Khmer of Buriram Province and Tai Lao of Ubon Ratchatani Province. Data collection tools were basic survey, participant and non-participant observation, structured and non-structured interview, focus group discussion and workshop. Results show that there are two major groups of Buddhist temple murals in Isan: those depicting ancient culture and customs painted prior to 1957 and contemporary murals painted after 1957. For the most part, murals are found on the walls of the ubosot and the instruction halls of the temples. The objectives of mural paintings were to worship the lord Buddha, decorate the temples, provide education to community members and maintain historical records. -

Recording the West: Central Asia in Xuanzang’s Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions Master’s Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Laura Pearce Graduate Program in East Asian Studies Ohio State University 2018 Committee: Morgan Liu (Advisor), Ying Zhang, and Mark Bender Copyrighted by Laura Elizabeth Pearce 2018 Abstract In 626 C.E., the Buddhist monk Xuanzang left the Tang Empire for India in a quest to deepen his religious understanding. In order to reach India, and in order to return, Xuanzang journeyed through areas in what is now called Central Asia. After he came home to China in 645 C.E., his work included writing an account of the countries he had visited: The Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions (Da Tang Xi You Ji 大唐西域記). The book is not a narrative travelogue, but rather presented as a collection of facts about the various countries he visited. Nevertheless, the Record is full of moral judgments, both stated and implied. Xuanzang’s judgment was frequently connected both to his Buddhist beliefs and a conviction that China represented the pinnacle of culture and good governance. Xuanzang’s portrayal of Central Asia at a crucial time when the Tang Empire was expanding westward is both inclusive and marginalizing, shaped by the overall framing of Central Asia in the Record and by the selection of local legends from individual nations. The tension in the Record between Buddhist concerns and secular political ones, and between an inclusive worldview and one centered on certain locations, creates an approach to Central Asia unlike that of many similar sources. -
