The Global As the Postcolonial: Desire, Identity, and Liminality in Indian Rock
International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 3106–3123 1932–8036/20160005 The Global as the Postcolonial: Desire, Identity, and Liminality in Indian Rock SANGEET KUMAR1 Denison University, Ohio, USA This essay uses the concept of desire to reinfuse existing conversations about the postcolonial condition and its relationship with globalization. The essay uses the Indian uptake of the seemingly alien cultural practice of rock music to understand the confluence of vestigial structures of colonialism and a globalizing subjectivity that challenge unified notions of a national identity in India. By exploring media coverage of rock and testimony from musicians, the essay unravels the liminal spaces of destabilized identities and fragmented subjectivities that mark the global postcolonial condition. In doing so, it illuminates the role of structures, past and present, in shaping cultural desire and determining affective responses to global culture. Keywords: desire, postcolonial condition, globalization, rock, India Introduction Popular cultural practices are imbued with messages that scholars have historically read as political (Bennett, 1999; Hebdige, 1979; Fiske, 2010). This essay seeks to understand the ongoing sociocultural changes in India and the transformations within notions of its national identity through a close study of the cultural formation of rock music in India. Globally feted for joining the league of fast- growing nations, including the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, and China; Armijo, 2007), the narrative of India’s economic growth in the decades since globalization has been both affirmed and challenged (Drèze & Sen, 2013; Pal & Ghosh, 2007). Although the economic consequences of the emergence of BRICs nations have been much studied (Baskaran & Muchie, 2008; Jadhav, 2012; Mallick & Sousa, 2013), the transformations in their social and cultural realms resulting from their embrace of global capitalism, which this essay analyzes, are just as deserving of analysis. -

1 Annotated Atlatl Bibliography John Whittaker Grinnell College version June 20, 2012 Introduction I began accumulating this bibliography around 1996, making notes for my own uses. Since I have access to some obscure articles, I thought it might be useful to put this information where others can get at it. Comments in brackets [ ] are my own comments, opinions, and critiques, and not everyone will agree with them. The thoroughness of the annotation varies depending on when I read the piece and what my interests were at the time. The many articles from atlatl newsletters describing contests and scores are not included. I try to find news media mentions of atlatls, but many have little useful info. There are a few peripheral items, relating to topics like the dating of the introduction of the bow, archery, primitive hunting, projectile points, and skeletal anatomy. Through the kindness of Lorenz Bruchert and Bill Tate, in 2008 I inherited the articles accumulated for Bruchert’s extensive atlatl bibliography (Bruchert 2000), and have been incorporating those I did not have in mine. Dawe/ Bennett, Berg. 2nd DRAFT 1. Introduction What roles does the guitar play, and what meanings does it convey in India? 1 These are not easy questions to answer, since the instrument has spread into many different musical genres, in various geographical regions of the subcontinent. This chapter is nonetheless an attempt, in response to those questions, to sketch out the main features of guitar culture in India. I see it as a kind of snapshot: partial, blurred and lacking fine definition perhaps, but offering a perspective that more focused and tightly-framed studies could not. My account is based on a few weeks’ travel in India, 2 concentrating on the main metropolitan cities of Chennai, Mumbai, Calcutta and Delhi – although it also draws on the reports of many inhabitants of these cities who have migrated from other regions, particularly those rich in guitar culture such as Goa and the north-eastern states. -

ABSTRACT This thesis introduces the reader to rock music in Durban from 1963 to 1985, tracing the development of rock in Durban from rock'n'roll to hard core punk. Although the thesis is historically orientated, it also endeavours to show the relationship of rock music in Durban to three central themes, viz: the relationship of rock in Durban to the socio-political realities of apartheid in South Africa; the role of women in local rock, and the identity crisis experienced by white, English-speaking South Africans. -

Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute. -
