The site was excavated from 2004 to 2009 during the summer field season with help from the University of Saskatchewan Department of Archaeology and Anthropology field school and the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society field school. A Master of Arts thesis dealing with the first three years of excavation entitled The Dog Child Site (FbNp-24): A 5500 Year Multicomponent Site on the Northern Plains was completed by Cyr (2006). A focus on the 2007 to 2009 field seasons has been undertaken in this thesis. Artifacts including projectile points and pottery recovered from the site as well as radiocarbon dates confirm the presence of six occupation levels. Five different projectile point series or complexes are associated with the six occupation levels including: Plains Side-Notched, Prairie Side- Notched, McKean series, Oxbow complex, and Mummy Cave series (Gowen). The Mummy Cave series at the site encompasses two of the occupation levels identified. Due to the rich Gowen cultural level at the site the opportunity to study this cultural occupation in more detail became the focus of the second research program. The Hypsithermal is a period of increased complexity and debate on the Plains. This thesis focuses on the 7500 to 4500 years B.P. time frame during which Mummy Cave series cultural occupations are present. The archaeological remains recovered from the Gowen occupation at the Dog Child site suggest the utilization of a broader subsistence base rather than a sole focus on utilizing and consuming bison. Comparison of other sites from this time period indicates that the Dog Child site may be unique in the number of specimens and taxa represented by the excavated faunal assemblage. From this analysis a wealth of new archaeological data including insight into Hypsithermal subsistence patterns and paleoenvironmental studies can be observed. ii Acknowledgements Numerous people are responsible in the completion of this project. Since I have access to some obscure articles, I thought it might be useful to put this information where others can get at it. Comments in brackets [ ] are my own comments, opinions, and critiques, and not everyone will agree with them. The thoroughness of the annotation varies depending on when I read the piece and what my interests were at the time. The many articles from atlatl newsletters describing contests and scores are not included. I try to find news media mentions of atlatls, but many have little useful info. They were all in three-ring folders, and I thoroughly enjoyed following the development of many things like rules,bending masts, weight discussions; and also personalities and successes. It seems to me that you have a wealth of material right in your own office already written Which many people would enjoy reading. Some of it could simply be reprinted. Some ideas or controversies could be rewritten and re-presented. History of many facets could be traced. You might consider getting copies made of the most active subjects (like how to put a wooden deck on a fiberglass hull; best methods and tools used for measuring hulls; how to put fiberglass cloth on a wooden hull; how to rebuild an old wooden hull; etc) and then furnish these at slight cost when enquiries are made on the subject.

Black Principal Investigator Colorado Historical Society with a contribution by Bruce Wahle Denver Chapter Colorado Archaeological Society Sponsored by Colorado Historical Society Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification Denver, Colorado Colorado State Permits #2004–21, 2005–6, 2006–41 October 2007 Abstract During the 2004–2006 field seasons, an archaeological survey was conducted east of Sanford, Colorado as part of the training available in the Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification (PAAC). The project thus used volunteers largely from the Colorado Archaeological Society (CAS) already enrolled in PAAC, supervised and trained by the Assistant State Archaeologist from the Colorado Historical Society. The inventory was completed on about 907 acres of the Pike’s Stockade State Historic Monument (PSSHM) in Conejos County, Colorado. The study tract encompassed a low shrubland environment on and around a volcanic mesa named Sierro del Ojito, bordering the wooded floodplain of the Conejos River, at elevations of 2,296–2,495 m. This area was intensively surveyed primarily to train PAAC volunteers in archaeological inventory and mapping methods. In addition, this portion of southern Colorado had been the subject of relatively little archaeological research interest, and the PSSHM—as a regional property of the Colorado Historical Society—made a logical choice for a PAAC survey project. As a result of the survey a total of 37 sites and 26 isolated finds (IFs) were recorded, including both American Indian and non-Indian materials. Historic period non-Indian sites comprise a rather diverse mix of artifact scatters, cairns, fences, stone enclosures, and rock inscriptions related primarily to ranching and recreational activities.
