Star Shines at Shell
May 24, 2014 Star Shines at Shell PHOTO BY YOSHI JAMES Homage to cult band’s “Third” kicks off Levitt series By Bob Mehr The Levitt Shell’s 2014 summer season opened Friday night, with a teeming crowd of roughly 4,000 who camped out under clear skies to hear the music of Memphis’ greatest cult band Big Star, in a show dedicated to its dark masterpiece, Third. Performed by an all-star troupe of local and national musicians, it was yet another reminder of how the group, critically acclaimed but commercially doomed during their initial run in the early 1970s, has developed into one of the unlikeliest success stories in rock and roll. The Third album — alternately known as Sister Lovers — was originally recorded at Midtown’s Ardent Studios in the mid-’70s, but vexed the music industry at the time, and was given a belated, minor indie-label release at the end of the decade. However, the music and myth of Third would grow exponentially in the decades to come. When it was finally issued on CD in the early ’90s, the record was hailed by Rolling Stone as an “untidy masterpiece ... beautiful and disturbing, pristine and unkempt — and vehemently original.” 1 North Carolina musician Chris Stamey had long been enamored of the record and the idea of recreating the Third album (along with full string arrangements) live on stage. He was close to realizing a version of the show with a reunited, latter- day Big Star lineup, when the band’s camp suffered a series of losses: first, with the passing of Third producer Jim Dickinson in 2009, and then the PHOTO BY YALONDA M. -
Hawkwind – 50Th Anniversary Live
All Aboard The Skylark“ zusammen. ‚Born To Go‘, ‚Space Is Deep‘, ‚Spirit Of The Age‘, ‚The Watcher‘, ‚Silver Machine‘ oder die beiden Doppelpacks ‚Assault And Battery / The Golden Void‘ und ‚Master Of The Universe / Welcome To The Future‘. Doch genauso bekommen insgesamt fünf Stücke aus „All Aboard The Skylark“ ihr Recht. -

The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash
SPOOFS The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash In the 1970s, Eric Idle, a former member of the legendary British com- edy team Monty Python, featured a Beatles parody song called “It Must Be Love” on Rutland Weekend Television, his own television show on BBC-2. The song had been written by Neil Innes, who had previously worked with Monty Python and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The song was performed by ‘The Rutles’, a Beatles look-alike band featuring Neil Innes as the John Lennon character, and Eric Idle as the Paul McCartney character (vgl. Harry 1985: 69). In October 1976, the parody was shown on America’s NBC TV’s show Saturday Night Live as a se- quel to the running gag of a Beatles reunion for $3,000. The parody went down so well that Eric Idle and Neil Innes decided to produce a feature program about The Rutles for television. Idle, who was a close friend of George Harrison, was allowed to watch Neil Aspinall’s unreleased do- cumentary about The Beatles, called The Long and Winding Road. Aspi- nall’s film featured a bulk of famous footage of The Beatles, from their first televised performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last group performance on the roof of their Apple business building. Idle u- sed The Long and Winding Road as a model for his fake-documentary about The Rutles and basically re-told the history of The Beatles pro- jected upon this imaginary rock band, adding essential elements of par- ody and the Pythonesque sense of surreal humor. -
On Bach's Bottomby Alex Chilton
On Bach’s Bottom by Alex Chilton Elizabeth Barker Not too many years ago, I stole a rock star’s likeness for my novel and then he asked me on a date. He’s the singer for a band I’ve loved since I was 14, one of the most enduring infatuations of my life. The character I based on him was very minor: my protagonist’s most adored ex-boyfriend, who wore beaded necklaces and ate his ice cream from the pint, with a butter knife instead of a spoon. He existed in flashbacks where kids drank Alex Chilton warm beer on back porches in the New England summertime, Rickie Lee Jones on the Bach’s Bottom radio. In one scene he dragged his finger through the melted frosting of a lemon danish, on a front stoop on a Sunday morning when he and his girl had barely slept and both had 1981 exciting hair, unwashed and ocean-salty. Line Records There wasn’t much point in adding that character to the story. I mostly stole the singer’s likeness so that I could infuse some of his goofball aura into my book. His aura was the exact sunny-yellow of the nucleus of a lemon danish, and I wanted to use him like a filmmaker uses pop songs to siphon off the sentiment of the melody. A few months after I wrote that section of my book, the singer moved to Los Angeles, to my side of town. And it unthrills me to get to this part of the story, because no one ever wants to use the word Twitter when they’re talking about love—but I suppose that’s the reality of the world today. -

Did Wigan Have a Northern Soul?
Did Wigan have a Northern Soul? Introduction The town of Wigan in Lancashire, England, will forever be associated with the Northern Soul scene because of the existence of the Casino Club, which operated in the town between 1973 and 1981. By contrast, Liverpool just 22 miles west, with the ‘the most intensely aware soul music Black Community in the country’, (Cohen, 2007, p.31 quoting from Melody Maker, 24 July 1976) remained immune to the attractions of Northern Soul and its associated scene, music, subculture and mythology. Similarly, the city of Manchester has been more broadly associated with punk and post-punk. Wigan was and remains indelibly connected to the Northern Soul scene with the Casino representing a symbolic location for reading the geographical, class and occupational basis of the scene’s practitioners. The club is etched into the history, iconography, and mythology of Northern Soul appearing in the academic and more general literature, television documentaries, memoirs, autobiographies and feature films. This chapter seeks to explore the relationship between history, place, class, industrialisation, mythology and nostalgia in terms of Wigan, the Casino Club and the Northern Soul scene. It asks the question: did Wigan have a northern soul? This is explored through the industrial and working-class history of the town and the place of soul music in its post-war popular culture. More broadly, it complements the historical literature on regional identity identifying how Northern Soul both complemented and challenged orthodox readings of Wigan as a town built on coal and cotton that by the 1970s was entering a process of deindustrialisation. -
