John Lennon – Steel and Glass - Walls And Bridges ‘74 Much like “How Do You Sleep” three years earlier, this is another blistering Lennon track that sets its sights on Allen Klein (who had contributed lyrics to “How Do You Sleep” those few years before). The Beatles - Revolution 1 - The Beatles 2 The first song recorded during the sessions for the “White Album.” At the time of its recording, this slower version was the only version of John Lennon’s “Revolution,” and it carried that titled without a “1” or a “9” in the title. Recording began on May 30, 1968, and 18 takes were recorded. On the final take, the first with a lead vocal, the song continued past the 4 1/2 minute mark and went onto an extended jam. It would end at 10:17 with John shouting to the others and to the control room “OK, I’ve had enough!” The final six minutes were pure chaos with discordant instrumental jamming, plenty of feedback, percussive clicks (which are heard in the song’s introduction as well), and John repeatedly screaming “alright” and moaning along with his girlfriend, Yoko Ono. Ono also spoke random streams of consciousness on the track such as “if you become naked.” This bizarre six-minute section was clipped off the version of what would become “Revolution 1” to form the basis of “Revolution 9.” Yoko’s “naked” line appears in the released version of “Revolution 9” at 7:53. -

First, the story of Frank Zappa and Herb Cohen’s eccentric labels is known mainly among cult circles. Much of the music discussed is extremely rare, so most viewers would find this film an eye-opening history lesson in a rather obscure chapter of rock. Second, while there was useful commentary from music historians, the heart of the film were the interviews with many of the actual participants including members of the GTOs, Alice Cooper, and Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band. However, the story for Strange Fruit: The Beatles' Apple Records is rather different and much more complex. After all, Apple had four head chefs named John, Paul, George, and Ringo with other key players like Beatle compatriots Peter Asher, Mal Evans, and Neil Aspinall. While the Zappa and Beatles projects were almost exactly concurrent (essentially from 1968 to the mid-70s), Apple Records had a very high profile indeed. -

The Apple Label With the Capitol Logo When Apple label introduced itself to the world in 1968, the brand featured a label design from the Gene Mahon agency. Reportedly, Neil Aspinall of Apple contacted Gene Mahon personally and told him that they would like for Mahon to shoot photographs of apples. His idea was to have a full apple on one side with no writing whatsoever, and a sliced apple on the other side containing all of the information about the record. With the way that the laws were written, EMI were reluctant to cram all of the information onto one label (which might also pose logistical problems on an album label). Mahon selected Paul Castell to take the photographs. Some apple photos later, and the famous Apple record label was born. The rim area around the label was left blank, to allow each EMI affiliate the ability to print whatever manufacturing information they desired (or what might be required by law). The art department at Capitol Records decided to keep the print to a minimum. At the bottom of the sliced side, they placed the words “Mfd. by Apple Records, Inc.” That was all that needed to be said. A few months later, Capitol decided to mark the labels differently for artists who had contracts with Capitol. At the time, this basically meant the Beatles themselves, whose singles were numbered as part of the Capitol series (in the 2000s). Records that were from artists whose discs were in the Apple series (the 1800s) and who had contracts through Apple alone would continue to be marked with “Mfd. -

Great singing voice is essential, as she must be able to sing effortlessly in many styles and vocal registers. Sings everything from opera to pop to scatting. Gets angry easily. SIR ROBIN (Tenor/Baritone, 30s-40s) – A Knight of the Round Table. Ironically called "Sir Robin the Brave," though he couldn't be more cowardly. Joins the Knights for the singing and dancing. Also plays GUARD 1 and BROTHER MAYNARD, a long-winded monk. A good mover. SIR LANCELOT (Tenor/Baritone, 30s-40s) – A Knight of the Round Table. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate discovers his "softer side." This actor MUST be great with character voices and accents, as he also plays THE FRENCH TAUNTER, an arrogant, condescending, over-the-top Frenchman; the KNIGHT OF NI, an absurd, cartoonish leader of a peculiar group of Knights; and TIM THE ENCHANTER, a ghostly being with a Scottish accent. -

PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW Patto, apart from being one of the finest (purely subjective, of course) bands this country ever produced, were not blessed with good fortune. Forever on the verge of making it really big, they broke up after six years of knocking on the door and finding no-one home. Subsequently, two of their number died while the other two were involved in a terrible car smash which left one with severe physical injuries and the other with severe mental problems. Drummer John Halsey is now the only Patto member who could possible give us an interview. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall are both gone, while bassist Clive Griffiths apparently doesn't even recall being in a band! Despite bearing the scars of the accident (Halsey walks with a pronounced limp), John was only too pleased to submit to a Terrascopic grilling - an interview which took place in the wonderful Suffolk pub he runs with his wife Elaine. Bancroft and I spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the Halseys, B & B'd in the shadow of a 12th Century church cupboard and returned to London the next morning with one of the most enjoyable interviews either of us has ever done. John Halsey: I started playing drums because two mates who lived in my road in North Finchley (N. London), where I'm from, wanted to form a group. This was years and years ago, 1958, 1959. Me, with a microphone inside me guitar that used to go out through me Mum's tape recorder, and if you put 'Record' and 'Play' on together, it'd act like an amplifier. -

After that he collaborated with me on many productions - first as film editor, then as director - for over twenty-five years. We became a sort of Ant-and- Dec-Behind-the-Camera." He was a man of great talent and enormous charm. Someone who could be relied on to come up with the goods with the least amount of fuss. In all the time I worked with him we rarely had a disagreement. It was a very happy and fruitful partnership." Andrew was educated at Eton - a fact that he played down all his life. He never used his school- ing as a stepping stone to anything … he made his way in life the way he wanted. Simply. Gen- tly. However, during his time at Eton he directed a stage production of T. S. Elliot’s “Murder in the Cathedral”. This was well received, and it resulted in him securing a place at the Oxford Play- house. There then followed work at the Century travelling theatre - an incredible set-up present- ing plays from a set of lumbering wagons trailing from town to town all over the North of England. Here he did anything and everything associated with being an ‘Assistant Stage Manager and Small Parts’." In the 1960s he decided to change course, and became a film editor at Associated Redi$usion. -

WRITING ASSIGNMENT Record Review You are going to write a record review of an album that is deemed significant in Rock Music. A list of groups/artists can be accessed by clicking on link below http://www.rollingstone.com/ news/story/5938174/the_rs_500_greatest_albums_of_all_time Criteria: Title Page Name, word count, course number, section number, etc. Introduction: Write a biography of the group you're critiquing. This should include the year the group/artist began recording, a list of and year of recordings, billboard chart positions, and any awards, Grammys, etc. www.allmusic.com is a great source for biographical information. Section 1 You will need to include all of the specifics of the recording, record label, producer(s), year, and dates of recording. Listen to the album several times as if you were a record critic and write an overview of the album, i.e. style of music, mood, highlights, lowlights, etc. Here are some things to consider: Is there a unifying theme throughout the album? Are there contrasting themes? If so, what are they? Is there enough variety musically in your opinion? What is it about this album in particular that makes it stand out? Section 2 Pick four songs and discuss them in more detail. Discuss your likes and dislikes as we have in relation to the journal entries in class but you will need to go into more detail. Discuss any other elements you find compelling, i.e., imagery from the lyrics or lack thereof, the use of and/or role of instrumentation, tempos, solos, vocals, etc. Section 3 Summarize your experience.
