All men whose higher nature has endowed them with a love of truth obviously have the greatest interest in working for pos terity, so that in return for the patrimony pravided for them by their predecessors' labors they may make provision for the patrimony of future generations. Certainly a m an who has re- 1 ceived public instruction would be far from performing his duty if he showed no concern for the public weal, for he would not be a "tree by the streams of waters, bearing his fruit in due season," but rather an erosive whirlpool always sucking in and never returning what it devours. Therefore, as I have often re minded myself of these things and wish not to be charged with burying my talent, I endeavor not only to grow in public use fulness but also to bear fruit by publishing truths that h ave not been attempted by others. For what fruit is there in proving once more a theorem in Euclid, or in trying to show man his true happiness, which Aristotle has already shown, or in defend ing old age as Cicero d id? Fruitless and positively tiresome are such superfluous "works." Among the truths that r emain hidden, though useful, the knowledge of the temporal government of the world is most useful and most unknown, but since this knowledge is not di rectly gainful it has been neglected by all.
