For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] The elY low House revisited Abstract Martin Sharp's Yellow House represents a transitional phase in the countercultural movement within Australia, from the peace and love Utopian ideals of the Sixties through to the disenchantment and technological changes of the Seventies. Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's similarly titled building and aborted artist community in the south of France during the 1880s, and the British Arts Lab movement of the late 1960s, a 3-storey Victorian era terrace building in Sydney was transformed into a work of art, living museum, experimental art gallery and performance space, under the liberating and libertine guidance of Martin Sharp - an artist who had experienced some of the extraordinary cultural changes taking place in London and Europe between 1966-69. The eY llow House was a unique expression of the counterculture's disparate elements through a redundant example of the built environment, namely a former art gallery and guest house facing the threat of demolition. Art and architecture fused with lifestyle and culture within a veritable rabbit warren of rooms and performance spaces. Though innately ephemeral, the venture succeeded, during its relatively short period of existence between May 1970 and March 1973, in providing an expressive outlet for a disparate group of counterculture artists, performers and commentators. -

Februar 2020 Der Winterschlaf des Fasnachtsbären neigt sich dem Ende zu. Am kommenden Donnerstag um 20.00 Uhr ist es soweit: er wird geweckt und aus dem Käfigturm befreit. Das närrische Treiben erhält Einzug in die Gassen der Berner Altstadt. Die fünfte Jahreszeit bringt mit Guggen, Schnitzelbank-, Theater- und Kostümgruppen Leben und Heiterkeit in die Bundeshauptstadt. Das Fasnachtsfieber kursiert vom Donnerstag bis Samstag in Bern und viel Musik von Guggen ist in den Gassen, auf den Bühnen Schmiedenplatz, Rathausgasse, Münsterplatz, im Narrentempel und in den Restaurants und Keller zu hören. „Bärebefreiig“ als Beginn am Donnerstag Das Vorhängeschloss am Käfigturm wird entfernt und der Fasnachtsbär wird aus dem Winterschlaf geweckt. Das Spektakel kann ab 20.00 Uhr mitverfolgt werden. Wir hoffen, die umliegenden Restaurants und Geschäfte folgen unserer Bitte, dafür das Licht und die Leuchtreklamen auszu- schalten. Denn das Ganze kommt bei Dunkelheit besser zur Geltung. Der Donnerstagabend bietet aber noch weitere Möglichkeiten, das Narrentreiben zu geniessen: und zwar mit der Schnitzelbank Soirée, F-Impuls auf dem Münsterplatz und der Vernissage mit Gugge in der Rathausgasse. „WIUDE WESCHTE“ und noch viel mehr am Freitag Am Freitagnachmittag stehen die Kleinsten und Kleinen im Mittelpunkt. Der Kinderumzug und die Kinderfasnacht rund ums Münster finden statt und sind für alle Teilnehmenden ein freudiges Spektakel. Abends geht es mit dem mystischen Fackelumzug in der unteren Junkerngasse, begleitet von wirbelnden Trommlern, weiter. Die Häxefasnacht findet dieses Jahr wiederum beim Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen statt. -

Verso 2009. p. 44 Artist Statement In my artistic work, I explore, how photographic images become a (tangible) poetic space of care, thought and agency by examining their materiality and framing through de-/reconstruction and entanglements of still and moving images: Images become handled, touched, treated and embodied, they expand in time and space and—in a self-critical attempt—depict and overwrite themself. Through fragmentation elements re-compose to a bigger picture and engage in a playful reflection about when and how an image touches its spectators. In my practice, images transfom through various media, remain in motion and take shape as process-oriented installations, assemblages, work groups, fragmentary essayistic layouts or videos and refer directly or indirectly to each other. Von der «Cloakenfrage» zur Schwemmkanalisation Die Abwasserentsorgung in der Stadt Bern 1850–1900 Ruth Stalder 1. Einleitung Anfang Februar 1870 informierte Stadtschreiber Ernst Wyss in einem Arti- kel im «Bund», dass seit einigen Jahren ein Streit über zwei neue Abortsys- teme im Gang sei: «Das eine ist das sogenannte Schwemmsystem, in einem grösseren Theil der eigentlichen Stadt von Alters her durch Cloaken (sog. Ehgräben) bereits eingeführt. Dieses System, beziehungsweise der theilweise mangelhafte Zustand der sich daran knüpfenden Aborteinrichtungen, wird von einem Theile derjenigen Männer, welche sich vornehmlich mit sanitari- schen Studien und Bestrebungen abgeben [...] heftig bekämpft und als un- zweckmässig und verderblich geschildert und dafür die Einführung des Ton- nen- oder Kübelsystems [...] als einzig rationellen und nach jeder Richtung besten angesehenen Systems lebhaft befürwortet.» Weiter hielt Wyss der Le- serschaft die Handlungsbereitschaft des Gemeinderates vor Augen: «Wir können nun aber mit Bestimmtheit versichern, dass die Gemeindsbehörden das Studium der Canalisations- und Cloakenfrage mit vollem Ernst an die Hand genommen haben, dass dieses Studium auch schon weit vorgerückt ist, und der Gemeinderath in nicht allzu ferner Zeit im Falle sein wird, Be- schlussesanträge an die Gemeinde formuliren zu können.»1 Im Gegensatz zu heute war um 1870 die Entsorgung der Fäkalien durch eine unterirdische Schwemmkanalisation noch keine Selbstverständlichkeit, sondern stand mit anderen Lösungsansätzen im Wettstreit. Die wissen- schaftlichen Lehrmeinungen über die medizinisch und hygienisch richtige Fäkalienentsorgung waren ebenfalls noch nicht gefestigt. Worum es bei der «Canalisations- und Cloakenfrage» in der Stadt Bern genau ging, weshalb die Frage nach dem richtigen Entsorgungssystem gerade im Jahr 1870 be- sonders heftig diskutiert wurde und welchen Entscheid die Gemeinde fällte, zeigt der vorliegende Artikel.2 Mit der Zunahme der Stadtbevölkerung ergaben sich für die Stadt Bern verschiedene Versorgungs- und Entsorgungsprobleme.
