Appendix I Dances and Ceremonies Performed by Bosavi People Aside from Gisaro, the people of Bosavi perform five other types of dances and ceremonies: Ilib Kuwc, Sæbio, Kcluba, Heyalo, and Iwc. Ilib Kuwc Ilib Kuwc is not a full-scale ceremony but a kind of celebratory dance performed in the longhouse during the day by one to four men to project an exciting atmosphere for some significant event. The dancers are costumed as in Heyalo and Kcluba with characteristic arched-frame headdresses of white cockatoo feath- ers with palm-leaf streamers (fasela), and they wear springing rattles of crayfish claws in their waistbands at the back. Dancers usually position themselves two at each end of the longhouse facing the interior and bounce back and forth in short hops across the hall from side to side beating hand drums (ilib). There is no singing, and the dancers make no effort to coor- dinate their motion or drumming. As in all Bosavi ceremonies, each performer is withdrawn and does not address or relate to his audience. When a dancer tires, he turns around to face the end of the hall and rests for a while. Members of a longhouse community may perform Ilib Kuwc among themselves to mark a noteworthy occasion such as a 225 226 / APPENDIX I successful raid or the preparations to receive a ceremonial party of guests. In the latter case, the dancers customarily move into the houseyard to greet the arrival procession, and the arrivals in turn lead out of the forest with their own Ilib Kuwc dancers. -

Creativity and preservation no ken wari, no ken surik don’t be concerned, don’t back away traim na wokim tasol just try and do it The previous three chapters have been concerned with illuminating the continuity of theme, text and function between Duna songs of ancestral and foreign origin, or the endogenous and the exogenous. This chapter will be concerned first with the creative process itself, as it applies to Duna song creation. Both ancestral and introduced song styles display a similar approach to composition, in particular the recycling of melodic material in songs of the same genre, and this compositional process can be seen as another form of continuity. This in turn reveals continuity in what is regarded as a key element of Duna song form: textual innovation. Consequences of this creative approach for the preservation endeavour are considered, before the chapter then turns to the views of the Duna themselves on the maintenance of their own traditions and some of the ways in which they have sought to do this.1 Continuity in creativity: ‘traim na wokim tasol’ The process of creativity is epitomised in the words of one popular song, ‘traim na wokim tasol’ (‘just try and do it’), cited above.2 One must acknowledge, however, that creativity does not start from nothing. Liep (2001:1) describes creativity as something that ‘bursts forth when elements, which were already known but apart, are brought together by inventive people in a novel way’. He goes on to define it as the process whereby ‘something new is produced through the recombination and transformation of existing cultural practices or forms’ (Liep 2001:2) and declares that ‘[e]very creative effort must emanate from familiar forms and methods of production’ (p. -

In advising it’s acceptance of the Convention, the Government of PNG joined other signatories in committing to, amongst other things, as far as possible to: 1. “adopt a general policy that aims to give the cultural and natural heritage a function in the life of the community and to integrate the protection of that heritage into comprehensive planning programs’; 2. undertake 'appropriate legal, scientific, technical, administrative and financial measures necessary for the identification, protection, conservation, presentation and rehabilitation of this heritage'; 3. refrain from 'any deliberate measures which might damage, directly or indirectly, the cultural and natural heritage' of other Parties to the Convention, and to help other Parties in the identification and protection of their properties.” UNESCO In accordance with Article 11 (1) of the Convention, in 2006 PNG formally nominated seven identified areas for Tentative Listing. -

The Bragge Collection – Library The Bragge Collection features two intimately connected components – more than 600 material culture artefacts collected and documented by Laurie Bragge, and his library containing various resources, which he has used extensively to write his multi-volume history of the Sepik. The material artefacts in the Bragge Collection are curated by the Discipline of Anthropology, Material Culture Collection (College of Arts, Society and Education), and housed in The Cairns Institute on the Cairns Campus. To enquire about these items, please contact Professor Rosita Henry ([email protected]). The library component of the Bragge Collection is the personal research library of the donor, Laurie Bragge. It consists of published and unpublished materials, all utilised in the production of his history of the Sepik. This listing is of the published materials. There are over 500 publications covering a range of subjects pertaining to Papua New Guinea and the donor’s research interests. The subjects used in the library listing have largely been assigned by the donor and include PNG Pacific & World History, Primitive Art, Religion and Sepik Anthropology. ONLY IN MENTAWAI Unique Primate Vocalisations and Songs in an Isolated Indonesian Island Group [Received 28th November 2016; accepted 29th July 2017 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.11.2.10] Linda Burman-Hall University of California, Santa Cruz <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: Biogeographical isolation has produced a unique rainforest biome and indigenous culture in Mentawai. While its huge surf is famous worldwide, Mentawai’s ecology and peoples remain comparatively unstudied. Alhough Mentawai evolved almost as many endemics as the Galápagos, its hunter-horticulturalists are surprisingly unrelated to Sumatran peoples. This study explores gibbon vocalisations and traditional animist beliefs and songs about gibbons and other primates in Mentawai’s three southern islands and makes a case to document and preserve this intangible cultural heritage. The most important of Mentawai's six endemic primates is the Kloss’s gibbon (Hylobates klossii, locally called bilou), a small, black, monogamous, singing ape. The bilou plays a significant role in the traditional animist cosmology of Mentawai: simultaneously considered a changeling human, a rainforest spiritual guardian and a resource for shamanic healing, at times the bilou spirit can also be an evil trickster or harbinger of death. Deep in the rainforests, mated female bilou sing solo or “duet” melodiously with each other along mutual territorial boundaries. While deforestation and modern hunting endanger all Mentawai primates, humans still imitate the bilou, and elderly (Si)Kerei (shaman) again can perform the endangered animist heritage of bilou songs. Abstract This thesis is an introduction to Duna, a language spoken by approximately 25,000 people living in Southern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea. Duna (also known as Yuna) is classified as a member of the Duna-Bogaya subgroup of the Trans New Guinea family. This study is primarily based on work with Duna speakers of the Lake Kopiago region. The thesis provides a basic treatment of phonology, describes the structure of simple sentences, and examines in detail the expression of epistemic assessment (the treatment of a proposition as representing knowledge), a semantic domain that is richly encoded by bound morphemes in the language. Chapter 1 gives background information concerning the Duna lands, people, and language situation. It also describes previous work that has been done on the language, and the nature and sources of the data used in this study. -

INTRODUCTION he Hull of Papua New Guinea are an ethnic group of between sixty and T seventy thousand people, mainly distributed over the Tagali River Basin of the Southern Highlands District (see Figure 1).^ The Hull language, a tone language, is a member of the Enga-Huli-Pole-Wiru family of languages (Wurm 1961). The topography of the Hull area is largely undulating limestone country, dissected by ridges and old volcanic ranges. This allows for the easy migration of people, which produces a homogeneity of culture throughout the entire tribal area,^ The Huh cultivate extensive vegetable gardens, sweet-potato being their dietary staple. Family and kinship ties form the basis for land ownership, and there is no village or commune system. The Huli have no chieftain system of hereditary social hierarchy. A person's talents and achievements determine his wealth and influence. Married couples do not live together in the same house, but occupy separate houses on the same land. As a result of these social characteristics, the Huli tend to be very individualistic in temperament. They are a strong self-assertive people, who regard their culture as being superior to that of their neighbors. They are proud of the beauty of their homeland and are very aware of their history. -
