Abstract This thesis is an introduction to Duna, a language spoken by approximately 25,000 people living in Southern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea. Duna (also known as Yuna) is classified as a member of the Duna-Bogaya subgroup of the Trans New Guinea family. This study is primarily based on work with Duna speakers of the Lake Kopiago region. The thesis provides a basic treatment of phonology, describes the structure of simple sentences, and examines in detail the expression of epistemic assessment (the treatment of a proposition as representing knowledge), a semantic domain that is richly encoded by bound morphemes in the language. Chapter 1 gives background information concerning the Duna lands, people, and language situation. It also describes previous work that has been done on the language, and the nature and sources of the data used in this study. Chapter 2 includes an overview of Duna segmental phonology and gives an account of citation tone contrasts in monomorphemic words. Chapter 3 outlines Duna word classes, including large open lexical classes such as nouns, and smaller closed grammatical classes such as demonstratives. Chapter 4 deals with the structure of the basic clause, describing the different clause types and outlining dominant and pragmatically marked word orders. Nouns and NP structure are treated in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 details NP marking that encodes epistemic positioning, specificity, pairhood, grouphood, semantic role, grammatical relation, and discourse or pragmatic prominence. Chapter 7 analyses complex predicates, for example, those that are composed of a verb and a verb adjunct, or of several verbs in series. The remainder of the thesis focusses on bound morphemes that are added to the predicate of a final clause. Chapter 8 treats markers which specify features of the denoted situation in terms of time or event modality. Chapters 9 and 10 describe evidential markers, information status markers, and epistemic particles, morphemes which attach to a final predicate to express an epistemic assessment of the proposition. Chapter 11 describes the formal and functional features of Duna sentence types and discusses typical implications that certain predicate markers have concerning a speaker’s or addressee’s relationship to the denoted situation. i Acknowledgements Many Duna people in the Lake Kopiago area and in Mount Hagen (Western High- lands Province) have contributed language material and discussion to this work. Andy whipped the bulk of my early chapter drafts into shape, and de- voted much time and effort to his careful reading of a near-final draft of the thesis. His stringent and perspicuous advice has been of immense value to me at every stage of the writing process. Alan Rumsey has conscientiously read even my most off-the-rail writings, and consistently offered wise and sensitive feedback. He has helped me to battle with some difficult organisational problems, and been encour- aging and engaged throughout. My advisor Malcolm Ross contributed significantly to a reworking of Chapters 1-7 with his thoughtful, precise, and clear-sighted comments. Nicholas Evans got stuck into Chapters 8-11 with enthusiasm and incisiveness. I enjoyed our discus- sions and arguments very much, and they were very important in helping me revise the thesis. I began my studies at the ANU in 2003 as a member of an interdisciplinary project ‘Chanted Tales from Highland New Guinea’ (funded by the Australian Re- search Council), of which Alan Rumsey was the lead Chief Investigator. Being a member of this project provided me with some additional funds for fieldwork and translation, and gave me the opportunity to take part in some very stimulat- ing workshops and collaborations. Thanks to Alan and also to Don Niles (Partner iii iv Acknowledgements Investigator on the project) for all their hard work in this regard. The anthropologist Nicole Haley has been working with Duna people since 1994, and was a postdoctoral fellow on the Chanted Tales project. She was in- strumental in making this language study happen, and I have benefited greatly from her experience and hard work. Nicole organised the establishment of the ANU re- search base at Rewapi, introduced me to the people who were pivotal to my study of Duna, and facilitated Kenny Kendoli and Richard Alo’s trips from PNG to Can- berra. I was able to use some recordings that Nicole made in 2003 as part of my data set, and am grateful for this important contribution to my work. The ethnomusicologist Kirsty Gillespie also joined the Chanted Tales project in 2003, and was awarded her doctorate this year for her research into creativity and change in Duna song. She has been an inspiring colleague and a warm and supportive friend. Kirsty made a number of excellent recordings of spoken Duna texts in 2005 (listed in Appendix 1) and made these available for my use. These have greatly added to the richness and quality of data I had available for analysis, and include some of my favourite stories. There are also several language structures and subtleties that I would have missed entirely were it not for Kirsty’s study of song texts while we were in the field. It was great to work together and I look forward to doing so again. I am grateful to my fellow students in the linguistics department at RSPAS, in particular Carol Priestley and Antoinette Schapper, for their reading recommenda- tions, problem-solving suggestions, thought-provoking discussions, and comrade- ship. I only hope I can be half as enlivening and encouraging in Antoinette’s final thesis months as she has been in mine. Creativity and preservation no ken wari, no ken surik don’t be concerned, don’t back away traim na wokim tasol just try and do it The previous three chapters have been concerned with illuminating the continuity of theme, text and function between Duna songs of ancestral and foreign origin, or the endogenous and the exogenous. This chapter will be concerned first with the creative process itself, as it applies to Duna song creation. Both ancestral and introduced song styles display a similar approach to composition, in particular the recycling of melodic material in songs of the same genre, and this compositional process can be seen as another form of continuity. This in turn reveals continuity in what is regarded as a key element of Duna song form: textual innovation. Consequences of this creative approach for the preservation endeavour are considered, before the chapter then turns to the views of the Duna themselves on the maintenance of their own traditions and some of the ways in which they have sought to do this.1 Continuity in creativity: ‘traim na wokim tasol’ The process of creativity is epitomised in the words of one popular song, ‘traim na wokim tasol’ (‘just try and do it’), cited above.2 One must acknowledge, however, that creativity does not start from nothing. Liep (2001:1) describes creativity as something that ‘bursts forth when elements, which were already known but apart, are brought together by inventive people in a novel way’. He goes on to define it as the process whereby ‘something new is produced through the recombination and transformation of existing cultural practices or forms’ (Liep 2001:2) and declares that ‘[e]very creative effort must emanate from familiar forms and methods of production’ (p.

    Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands First compiled by Nancy Sack and Gwen Sinclair Updated by Nancy Sack Current to January 2020 Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands Background An inquiry from a librarian in Micronesia about how to identify subject headings for the Pacific islands highlighted the need for a list of authorized Library of Congress subject headings that are uniquely relevant to the Pacific islands or that are important to the social, economic, or cultural life of the islands. We reasoned that compiling all of the existing subject headings would reveal the extent to which additional subjects may need to be established or updated and we wish to encourage librarians in the Pacific area to contribute new and changed subject headings through the Hawai‘i/Pacific subject headings funnel, coordinated at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.. We captured headings developed for the Pacific, including those for ethnic groups, World War II battles, languages, literatures, place names, traditional religions, etc. Headings for subjects important to the politics, economy, social life, and culture of the Pacific region, such as agricultural products and cultural sites, were also included. Scope Topics related to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawai‘i would predominate in our compilation had they been included. Accordingly, we focused on the Pacific islands in Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia (excluding Hawai‘i and New Zealand). Island groups in other parts of the Pacific were also excluded. References to broader or related terms having no connection with the Pacific were not included. Overview This compilation is modeled on similar publications such as Music Subject Headings: Compiled from Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Subject Headings in Jewish Studies.

ABSTRACT AND KEY WORDS In this thesis, I analyse ways in which relations that build the lifeworld of Fasu people of Haivaro, in the northwest lowlands of the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea, have been and continue to be renegotiated and reconfigured in the context of their engagement with multiple expressions of modernity, in particular with a logging company operating on their land. I show how these transformations entail processes of embodiment, disembodiment and re-embodiment of those relations. The relationships that people develop with the human and non-human beings that populate their environment are diverse and context-dependent. They emerge and consolidate as people engage with that environment and where the latter changes – either abruptly or gradually – so too the relations that built their lifeworld also change. In the years before 1996, several logging and oil companies operated in the Haivaro region. Fasu people engaged with these only sporadically. In 1996, however, a logging company established a base camp 3km northeast of Haivaro and remained there until 2016.

It highlights both positive and negative factors which caused both success and decline in the historical period from the introduction of vernacular literacy to the present, factors such as orthography, motivation, the place of the Huli scriptures and other printed matter, the influence of education in English and the prestige attributed to both English and Pidgin; and will conclude with a comment on the current status and prospects of vernacular literacy in the Elementary Schools. Parallelism and Poetics in Tindi Narratives Sung in the Ipili Language Terrance Borchard and Philip Gibbs Introduction The Ipili people of Enga Province, Papua New Guinea, have traditional tales, called tindi, which may be told either in ordinary spoken style or as long poetic chanted tales. This chapter focuses on the role that is played by parallelism, which manifests itself in the ordered interplay of repetition and variation in the linguistic and poetic form of the sung versions. Before discussing tindi we will first provide some background details concerning the region.1 Ipili is the name of the ethnic group living in the Porgera and Paiela valleys, and is also the name of the language that they speak. As is often found to be the case in Papua New Guinea, the name by which they are known was not coined by the Ipili themselves, but others from outside the region, in this case the Huli to the south. The name they coined, Ibili,2 means ‘salt-people’ in Huli, the Ipili region being known to them as a source for salt. To the people themselves, Ipili refers only to the Porgera Valley. Paiela refers to a different valley on the other side of a high mountain range. The name “Porgera” comes from the Ipili name for the biggest river in the Porgera valley, which flows into the Lagaipa River. The Ipili called it the Poketa River, but the government officers distorted the pronunciation to “Porgera,” and identified the valley on the basis of the biggest river flowing out of it.

INTRODUCTION he Hull of Papua New Guinea are an ethnic group of between sixty and T seventy thousand people, mainly distributed over the Tagali River Basin of the Southern Highlands District (see Figure 1).^ The Hull language, a tone language, is a member of the Enga-Huli-Pole-Wiru family of languages (Wurm 1961). The topography of the Hull area is largely undulating limestone country, dissected by ridges and old volcanic ranges. This allows for the easy migration of people, which produces a homogeneity of culture throughout the entire tribal area,^ The Huh cultivate extensive vegetable gardens, sweet-potato being their dietary staple. Family and kinship ties form the basis for land ownership, and there is no village or commune system. The Huli have no chieftain system of hereditary social hierarchy. A person's talents and achievements determine his wealth and influence. Married couples do not live together in the same house, but occupy separate houses on the same land. As a result of these social characteristics, the Huli tend to be very individualistic in temperament. They are a strong self-assertive people, who regard their culture as being superior to that of their neighbors. They are proud of the beauty of their homeland and are very aware of their history.
