ANNUAL REPORT SEASON 2003-2004 PRESENTATION NIGHT Friday, 7th May 2004 at Pennant Hills Bowling Club Normanhurst Cricket Club Established in 1926 (Foundation Club in HK&HDCA) A DIVISION OF NORMANHURST SPORTS CLUB www.NormoSports.com PRESIDENT’S REPORT I’d like to start by thanking everyone who was involved with the club this year. The coaches, managers, scorers, umpires and spectators, you are what Normanhurst Cricket Club is all about – a community. This season was not too dissimilar to last season. Numbers were fairly static – we lost one junior side (the girls team) but gained a new senior team. One of the most pleasing developments this year is our securing of sponsorship from Pennant Hills Bowling Club. One hundred players and parents took up the opportunity to become members at PHBC which got us over the line as far as their sponsorship criteria was concerned. I’d like to thank PHBC for their support and we are hoping this will be the start of a long relationship between us both. There were some great team and individual achievements this season, which included Premierships by the senior A2 team and junior U/13 Gilchrist team, a rare hat-trick by Simon Krisenthal (U/12 Martyn), Simon Laveau’s stunning 9/21 in A2’s, and Nishad Kulkarni’s 128 in C3’s – his first century in senior cricket. Of course there were many other highlights and you can read about them in the following reports. This season saw us reach two milestones that the Committee has put in place over the past four years: • Our A2’s won the minor premiership, then went on to defeat Galston-Glenorie in the Final, so next season NCC will have an A Grade team, our first since 1997-98. NCC has a proud history in A Grade, having fielded a team in the Association’s top grade in 38 seasons, winning 3 Premierships, including the inaugural title in 1926-27 and as recently as 1995-96. The club can’t wait until Round 1 in 2004-05 ! • This season we had four of last year’s U/16 players move into senior cricket. This has been a weakness in the club in the past and having juniors assist by playing the occasional afternoon game has made the transition to senior cricket so much easier. The children are our future so I hope this trend continues. A special thank you goes to our Committee this year. For all the hours put in both during, but more particularly before and after the season. Special mention should be made of three stalwarts – Nigel Lazarus, for his many hours spent keeping the best website in the association running. Jaye Waldegrave, who as Registrar has that busiest of tasks and not only just at the start of the season. Jaye is also co-ordinating our push for “club playing shirts” which you’ll hear more about at the start of next season. And Bruce Wood, for looking after the juniors this year. Bruce’s enthusiasm and diligence would be hard to match. I wish to thank Graham Skulander and his family for donating a new perpetual trophy for wicket-keeping. The existing Wal Braunack Trophy, which Graham won 4 times, will now revert to an award for fieldsmen only. Finally, many thanks to all of you who have made the effort to come tonight. I’m sure you’ve loved watching your child (or grandchild) enjoy the wonderful game of cricket. If this is your first or tenth season with NCC, I hope it has been an enjoyable experience for you and your family. I hope we’ll see you back again next season. Anthony Maxworthy 2003-2004 COMMITTEE President Anthony Maxworthy Vice-President Bruce Wood (& Junior Co-ordinator) Secretary Robert Darling Treasurer John Corish Registrar Jaye Waldegrave Equipment Officer John Kerr Webmaster Nigel Lazarus Youth Officer Cameron Riddett Archives Officer Bruce Wood 2 VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT ON THE JUNIORS NCC fielded 11 junior boys teams and a Kanga squad in 2003-04 – the same number of boys teams as last season. We had two U/9 (Average), two U/10 (Limited), U/11, two U/12, two U/13, U/14 & U/15, ie. we had at least one team in every age group except the U/16’s. With our current U/15 Lee team moving through to the U/16’s next season, we should have a team in every age group, although our U/11 Ponting team struggled for numbers this year. The NCC Committee recognises the importance of having an U/12 team in 2004-05, so a big effort will be made prior to next season to recruit some more players to fill this team. For the first time in several years, NCC didn’t have enough girls register to field a Girls team. We hope to remedy this situation next season by increased promotion of the opportunities for girls to play cricket with NCC. If any boys playing for the club have sisters interested in cricket, please let me know. All the teams performed creditably and enjoyed their cricket while developing their skills. A special thank you to all the Coaches, Managers, Scorers and other assistants for the hard work and commitment they have shown to make it all possible for the boys. I would particularly like to thank Charles Summers, our Kanga Co-ordinator, for organising a keen group of 23 youngsters each week. I spent a Saturday morning with this group and was impressed with the range of activities undertaken and the active participation of many of the parents. It is vital that these boys get a solid grounding in cricket techniques and develop a love of the game, which hopefully will see them move through the club’s junior age groups in the years to come. The future looks bright for NCC with the number of talented players coming through the juniors. Our U/10 (Limited) teams did very well this season and two NCC teams, U/12 Martyn and U/13 Gilchrist, finished the competition rounds as undefeated Minor Premiers. We also had a club record number of boys (20) selected in HK&HDCA representative teams, mainly in the U/12 – U/14 age groups (see names in this Annual Report). We look forward to seeing these boys and their teams advance through the junior competitions and then into our senior teams in the future. In order to acknowledge outstanding service to NCC juniors, the Committee has agreed to award a medal in future to any players who play continuously from Kangas to U/16 with NCC. In addition, a new perpetual trophy, the Rob Aldersley Memorial Trophy, has been kindly donated by Mrs Calypso Aldersley in memory of her late son, Rob, for outstanding service to NCC junior & senior teams. Both our U/13 sides (Waugh & Gilchrist) qualified for the Semis out of a 13-team competition, which was a great effort. Rain spoilt the U/13 Final, however nothing could be taken away from our club’s victorious U/13 Gilchrist team that was declared “Premiers” for 2003-04. To put this achievement in perspective, NCC has fielded a total of 247 junior teams in 45 separate seasons of HK&HDCA cricket, however this was only NCC’s 4th junior Premiership in our long history. I would like to congratulate the players and everyone involved. One of the stars in the U/13 Gilchrist team, Timm van der Gugten, scored 358 runs at the incredible average of 179.0 (retired five times on 60no – max. score), which enabled him to win the Association’s U/13 Batting Prize and retain the NCC Junior Cricketer-of-the-Year award. Special mention is also warranted for Christy Doran from the U/12 Martyn team, who scored 209 runs @ 104.5 average, as well as taking 12 wickets. The Association holds two ‘show case’ representative matches every year – the U/15 Ross Turner Cup and the U/12 Glenn Hourigan Cup. I am pleased to report that NCC had 4 players in the Turner Cup match – Joel Carter, Brendon Scott, Timm van der Gugten and Simon Fox. NCC also had one player selected in the inaugural Hourigan Cup match – Josh Cole, who top-scored for his team. All our boys performed well, with the two youngest players in the Turner Cup match, U/13 Gee Shield players, Simon Fox (3/24 off 10 overs) and Timm van der Gugten (31 runs) making big impressions on the coaches, selectors and officials at the match. I would like to thank three Committee members who have also contributed a lot towards the running of junior cricket at Normanhurst CC. Jaye Waldegrave does a great job as Registrar, typing up and maintaining all the team lists and resolving queries from parents. Nigel Lazarus spends many hours updating our excellent website, and John Kerr ensures that everything runs smoothly with the equipment in the kits. I also wish to thank Bruce Kimberley, the HK&HDCA Junior Competition Organiser, who again administered the large and successful junior competition. Those who choose to criticise him should realise that he performs this demanding role single-handedly, as affiliated clubs have failed to nominate an official to act as his deputy. Thanks again to everyone who was involved with NCC junior cricket this season. We look forward to seeing you all back playing cricket with Normanhurst CC next season. Bruce Wood 3 CLUB TROPHIES and AWARDS NCC presents the following awards and trophies: • Each new junior starting his or her cricket with Normanhurst is presented with a personalised “plaque”.
