This was the “Mighty Eighth’s” 78th such mission to Europe since the start of its strategic bombing operations from bases in England in August of the previous year. On this occasion, for the first time, and at least for a part of their journey into the airspace of the Reich, the bombers would enjoy the security and protection of P‑47 Thunderbolt escort fighters. The latter had been fitted with bulky and unpressurized auxiliary fuel tanks that were normally used for ferry flights, but which greatly extended their usual range. Yet even with this extra fuel, the P‑47s could only stay with the bombers for part of their journey. Herein lay a dichotomy. Despite warnings to the contrary from their Royal Air Force (RAF) counterparts, senior staff officers in the USAAF believed in the viability of undertaking future unescorted daylight missions to key targets within Germany. In January 1943 Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt met in Casablanca to determine a plan for Allied victory. -

WDIVE-BCMBING" No praise can be too high for the amazing versatality of the pilots of the VIII Fighter Command, which has excited the notice and commendation of the masters of war flying in the R.A.F. as well as in our own Forces; other groups, however, took it up very soon after the initial attempts and it became a very popular form of outdoor sport for most of our fighter groups long before D-Day. It was the 353rd Fighter Group which pioneered this activity in the 8 Air Force. Dive-bombing their had been done by the Germans in Spain as far back as 1936; "Stuka" was as vicious in looks as in performance. Used again in Poland, Norway, the Lowlands, France and the Battle of Bri- tain, it was of tremendous importance as a morale-destroying factor no less than for its destructiveness. But never before had high altitude fighters been used as dive-bombers. Col. Loren McCollum and his Air Executive Col. Glenn E. Duncan of the 353rd pioneered in this adaptation. It is the irony of fate that on Thanksgiving morning, November 25, 1943, while leading the first of these missions with P-47's, Col McCollum received an unlucky direct hit by flak, his Thunderbolt was stripped of its outer surface and, at the date of writing, his fate is uncertain. In part two, the narrator presents excerpts from conversations between the American and German delegations. Topics discussed include the German scoring system for aerial victories, past and current developments in aerial warfare, and the diplomatic importance of the meeting. Identified speakers include Werner Andres, President of the Luftwaffe Fighter Pilots’ Association; James L. Brooks, President of the American Fighter Aces Association; Eugene A. Valencia, Vice President of the American Fighter Aces Association; Raymond F. Toliver, United States Air Force officer; German fighter aces Walter Krupinski, Gerhard Barkhorn, Erich Hartmann, Adolf Galland, and Georg Eder; and American fighter aces Walker M. “Bud” Mahurin and Hubert Zemke.
