Non è la prima volta che Arvo Pärt viene ispirato a comporre su testi di Saint Silouan, nel 1991 ha infatti pubblicato i "Silouans Songs" per orchestra, registrati da ECM con il Te Deum, il Magnificat e la Berliner Mass. Il compositore ha interiorizzato profondamente le parole,che, nella lingua slava ecclesiastica, determinano la sostanza e la struttura del brano. Il nome di Adamo è pensato come un termine collettivo, che comprende l'intero genere umano, ma anche ciascuna persona individualmente, la previsione di una tragedia umana come una colpa personale. La prima esecuzione di questo lavoro ebbe luogo nel giugno 2010 a Istanbul proprio sotto la direzione di Tõnu Kaljuste e con l'Estonian Chamber Choir, cioè gli interpreti ideali di cui si avvale questo CD, che comprende anche altri importanti lavori della produzione sacra di Pärt. Fra quelli che il compositore ha rielaborato è da citare il Salve Regina, nella nuova versione orchestrale, tratta dall'originale per coro e organo. "La Finta Giardiniera" è fra le opere meno conosciute della produzione mozartiana, forse anche a causa della sparizione della versione originale rappresentata a Monaco. Nel 1796, quindi postuma, comparve una versione per la rappresentazione a Praga (cantata in tedesco) che presentava un'orchestrazione fortemente arricchita, "sinfonica", tipica dell'ultimo Mozart. René Jacobs si è interrogato su questa versione, detta di Némets, e sulla sua incredibile vitalità nel coniugare senza scrupoli elementi di un'intricata opera moderna a elementi portatori di grandi passioni tipici della farsa. In English, the word was adapted to describe innovative composers, writers, painters, and other artists whose work was so pioneering that it was believed to be in the vanguard of contemporary thinking. Avant-gardism represented a movement to liberate artists from the restraints of tradition, and it often went hand-in-hand with progressive social thinking. T ose who championed avant-garde art tended to applaud social change. T ose who criticized it for rejecting prevailing standards couched their dismay in warnings against moral laxity or political anarchy. In the end, however, all art, traditional or avant-garde, must stand on its merit, inde- pendent of historic infl uences. T e art that outrages one generation often becomes the tradition and homework assignments of the next: the paintings of Paul Cézanne and Pablo Picasso, music of Gustav Mahler and Claude Debussy, and writings of Marcel Proust and James Joyce were all initially considered avant-garde. Two especially promi- nent twentieth-century avant-garde movements gathered steam in the decades follow- ing the world wars, and jazz was vital to both. Sonny Rollins combined the harmonic progressions of bop with the freedom of the avant-garde and sustained an international following. Summary The narrator, a teacher in Harlem, has escaped the ghetto, creating a stable and secure life for himself despite the destructive pressures that he sees destroying so many young blacks. He sees African American adolescents discovering the limits placed on them by a racist society at the very moment when they are discovering their abilities. He tells the story of his relationship with his younger brother, Sonny. That relationship has moved through phases of separation and return. After their parents’ deaths, he tried and failed to be a father to Sonny. For a while, he believed that Sonny had succumbed to the destructive influences of Harlem life. Finally, however, they achieved a reconciliation in which the narrator came to understand the value and the importance of Sonny’s need to be a jazz pianist. The story opens with a crisis in their relationship. The narrator reads in the newspaper that Sonny was taken into custody in a drug raid. He learns that Sonny is addicted to heroin and that he will be sent to a treatment facility to be “cured.” Unable to believe that his gentle and quiet brother could have so abused himself, the narrator cannot reopen communication with Sonny until a second crisis occurs, the death of his daughter from polio.

La tradizione musicologica concorda però nel ritenere che la sua fortuna all’epica della composizione sia stata scarsa e spiega così il fatto che l’autografo sia andato disperso e le parti siano state ritrovate al museo nazionale di Praga solo nel 1961. Prima di tale data non ci sono tracce certe di esecuzioni di questo concerto. Eppure una notizia, seppure vaga, emerge dai giornali inglesi dell’800: il 25 maggio 1856, Piatti eseguì un concerto di Haydn per violoncello e orchestra alla Philharmonic Society. Il critico londinese dell’Illustrated London News che scrive la recensione del concerto non si cura di precisare di quale concerto di tratti, si limita ad annotare che il concerto di Haydn proposto da Piatti, con la sua “usual excellence” è apparso però un po’ “antiquated”.
