And continuing the theme, pianist Alan Contributing Photographers Broadbent (Interview), playing three nights at Mezzrow, and bassist Michael Bisio (Artist Richarda Abrams, Torben Christensen, Feature), celebrating a new CD at Zürcher Gallery along with other appearances, have both Gary Firstenberg, Yngve Froyen, established themselves in the scenes of one (or more) cities and then relocated to be embraced Peter Gannushkin, Marek Lazarski, by our local community of players. Three songs were reprised from the group’s Sanders and late-period Coltrane. All four musicians debut disc, but most came from the new album, plus a proved themselves masters of knotted form and cover of Hendrix’ ballad “Angel”. Was it jazz? Does it continually wowed, although a bit more elegant matter? It certainly wasn’t what Duke Ellington would simplicity could have been equally breathtaking.

This was shortly before Miles Davis, in a supreme act of self-will, kicked the heroin habit. “Miles told us how he was really hooked on drugs”, says Errol, “that he didn’t dig heroin, and wanted to get off it.” One night Buddle had a choice between hearing the Stan Kenton band with Zoot Sims on tenor, or Charlie Parker, who was in Detroit for one night playing at a black dance.

Twitter " Facebook # Google+ $ Email LEO VAN VELZEN / LEOVANVELZEN.COM Gerry Teekens, founder and proprietor of Criss Cross Jazz, an unassuming Dutch indie label that became a vital repository of recorded jazz from the 1980s onward, died on Oct. 31. He was 83. His death was confirmed by his son, Jerry Teekens, Jr. At the news, tributes poured in from Criss Cross artists old and new, including soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome and guitarist David Gilmore. Formerly a professional drummer, Teekens founded Criss Cross in 1981 with a mission to document swinging, straight-ahead jazz of the highest caliber. At first the roster featured musicians as revered as guitarist Jimmy Raney and saxophonist Warne Marsh, but it grew to include the young and the promising: saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter and Mark Turner, to name but a few, and pianists Orrin Evans, Bill Charlap and Benny Green. In recent years the Criss Cross aesthetic began to broaden, with artists like alto saxophonist David Binney and trumpeter Alex Sipiagin using electronics and synthesizers, moving beyond the strictures of one-take-and-done while still remaining on board with the label.

Something is happening out there. In re - cent years, at the city and at national levels, data are being collected, action plans are being implemented, and “live music offices” are being staffed. The evidence is conclusive. Under the right conditions a vibrant music scene positively affects community and economic development. Link it to tourism and it can really bring in the dollars and jobs. Austin, Nashville, New Orleans, and Berlin are clearly “music cities” where festivals, clubs and the supporting in - dustries provide jobs and attract tourist dollars. Austin has been America’s fastest-growing city for the last nine years.
