So with that introduction, we are pleased to announce that as of this issue, the gazette formerly known as AllAboutJazz-New York will now be called The New York City Jazz Record. It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. But, echoing Shakespeare’s idea, the change in name Interview: Johnny Mandel will have no impact whatsoever on our continuing mission to explore new worlds 6 by Marcia Hillman and new civilizations...oh wait, wrong mission...to support the New York City and international jazz communities. Little by little, as information tends to accumulate, we discovered that Bill Tole is the brother of singer Nancy Knorr, who works with the Bill Tole as Bill Tole Jimmy Dorsey orchestra directed by Jim Miller. We also found out that Bill has a brother who is also a trombonist, and also works in the west coast studios. We got to know Bill Tole on a one-to-one basis when he led a Tommy Dorsey style orchestra on a spring BBJ cruise on the S.S. Rembrandt. We didn’t know until then that he’d portrayed Tommy Dorsey in a feature motion picture years earlier, assuming the Dorsey mannerisms, and of course playing the Dorsey music. He is a personable, easy-to-know musician who is fully dedicated to just that.... being the best musician he can be.

Not only is the 26th the late trumpeter’s birthday but many of his most enduring works were New York@Night recorded during this month, including the Charlie Parker All-Stars (1948); the 4 Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet’s run in Paris (1949), most of the Workin’, Steamin’ and Relaxin’ triumvirate by the quintet with John Coltrane (1956), Miles Interview: Vince Giordano Ahead and At Carnegie Hall, both with the Gil Evans Orchestra (1957 and 1961 6 by Michael Hittman respectively); and the bulk of Miles in the Sky (1968). Now in May 2008, another chapter to the Miles Legacy will be written with an ambitious concert at Town Artist Feature: George Garzone Hall May 9th, “Miles From India”. A companion concert to a just-released album 7 by Matthew Miller of the same name, the concert brings together musicians who played with the legend throughout his career as well as a number of classical Indian musicians for Label Spotlight: Les Disques Victo what is billed as a “cross-cultural summit meeting”. Our Encore this month, 8 by Kurt Gottschalk guitarist Pete Cosey, is participating in what is sure to be a monumental event. But, as is typical for New York, the happenings don’t stop happening there. Club Profile: Dizzy’s Club Pianist Ahmad Jamal (Cover) brings his trio to Blue Note in a pre-release by Laurel Gross celebration of his first new album in three years, It’s Magic (Birdology-Dreyfus), due out in June.

J^ mwft7 1f 1 a i 0 /Y- / DEVELOPING A GUIDE TO THE TECHNIQUES OF IMITATING SELECTED COMMERCIAL MUSIC STYLES THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF MUSIC By Jeffrey M. King, B. M. Denton, Texas August, 1975 King, Jeffrey M., Developing a Guide to the Techniques of Imitating Selected Commercial Music Style. Master of Music, August, 1975, 285 pp., 55 illustrations, 24 tables, bibliography, 45 titles. The purpose of this study was to develop a guide to help teach commercial music style imitation, Styles selected were ragtime, dixieland, Whiteman, Goodman, Miller, bop, Berry, Presley, Motown, hard rock, horn band, soft rock, straight ahead big band, Ellington, Basie, country rock, bluegrass, Country-Western, Mantovani, Boston Pops, and Love Unlimited Orchestra. Melody, harmony, rhythm, voicing, instrumentation, form, special effects, performance techniques, electronic alteration, and articulation were discussed for each style. A table summarizing each discussion, and an arrangement and recording of the same melody in each style were included, The guide appears successful, judging from commercial writers' estimations, The work will probably aid writers, performers, researchers, and publishers. Similar works could be done on other commercial and ethnic styles. PREFACE The aspiring commercial music arranger/composer faces many obstacles in his preparation for the profession. One of the main problems encountered is locating sources which can provide information about the imitation of com- mercial music styles, The television viewer and radio listener, as wel4. as the movie-goer, are exposed to massive doses of music every time they engage in one of these pastimes.

  • Seldon Powell
1 The TENORSAX of SELDON POWELL Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Feb. 16, 2021 2 Born: Lawrenceville, Virginia, Nov. 15, 1928 Died: New York, Jan. 25, 1997 Introduction: I remember very well our first encounter with Seldon Powell; through the exciting 1956 Atlantic album “Boss Of The Blues” with Joe Turner. We enjoyed his music very much from the start, and realizing the enormous number of recording sessions he had taken part in, we called him a ‘tenorsax potato’, suitable for all jazz dishes. It was meant as an honour. In our opinion, SP did never get the recognition he deserved History: First musical studies at Brooklyn and New York Conservatories 1947-49 and graduated at Juillard 1957. First job with the band of Betty Mays 1949, Tab Smith at Savoy Ballroom 1949 and Dec. 1949 with Lucky Millinder until 1951. Did army service 1951-52 playing in bands in France and Germany where he was stationed. After discharge returned to New York and played with Sy Oliver, Erskine Hawkins, Neal Hefti, Louis Bellson and Don Redman 1952-55. Studied at Juillard. In 1958 he travelled to Europe with Benny Goodman’s band, and then he played briefly with Woody Herman. In the 1960s he worked chiefly for ABC TV but also recorded heavily. His numerous recordings as a studio musician include many made in the late 1960s and early 1970s with soul and soul-jazz musicians, including Groove Holmes (ca. 1973) and sessions in the big bands that accompanied Gato Barbieri (1974) and Anthony Braxton and Dizzy Gillespie (both 1976).

Part 1 of Selected Discography Milt Hinton as Leader or Co-leader Compiled by Ed Berger (1949-2017) - Librarian, journalist, music producer, photographer, historian, and former Associate Director, Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University. It is estimated that between 1930 and 1995, Milt Hinton performed on more than nine hundred jazz record sessions. He made at least as many records, especially during the ’50s and ’60s, that featured hundreds of non-jazz performers, as well as countless jingles and film and television soundtracks. Specific and comprehensive information about Hinton’s recordings outside of jazz is nearly impossible to obtain. A partial list of non-jazz performers with whom he recorded includes: Paul Anka, Pearl Bailey, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Brook Benton, Archie Blyer, Teresa Brewer, Diahann Carroll, the Clancy Brothers, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Sam Cooke, Bing Crosby, Vic Damone, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis Jr., the Drifters, Percy Faith, Eddie Fisher, Connie Francis, Judy Garland, Jackie Gleason, Arthur Godfrey, Eydie Gormé, Skitch Henderson, John Lee Hooker, Lena Horne, Langston Hughes, Mahalia Jackson, Jack Jones, Frankie Laine, Steve Lawrence, Guy Lombardo, Johnny Mathis, Paul McCartney, Bette Midler, the Mills Brothers, Mantovani, Willie Nelson, Patti Page, Leontyne Price, Leon Redbone, Della Reese, Debbie Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Kate Smith, Barbra Streisand, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Bobby Vinton, Dionne Warwick, Roger Williams, Jackie Wilson, and Hugo Winterhalter. The recording location is the New York City area unless otherwise noted. CDs have the same title as the LPs unless otherwise noted. [MH comp] indicates that Hinton was the composer or co-composer of a piece.
