Artie Shaw, 1910-2004: Last Great Musician of the Big Band Era
12 May 2012 | MP3 at voaspecialenglish.com Artie Shaw, 1910-2004: Last Great Musician of the Big Band Era AP Artie Shaw playing the clarinet in 1941 DOUG JOHNSON: I'm Doug Johnson with PEOPLE IN AMERICA in VOA Special English. Today we tell the story of a musician who led one of the most popular American bands during the nineteen thirties and forties. His name was Artie Shaw. Listen for a few minutes to one of his many hit songs. This one is called "Frenesi." Artie Shaw plays the clarinet. (MUSIC) On December thirtieth, two thousand four, Artie Shaw died after a long sickness. He was ninety-four years old. He was the last great musician and bandleader of what has been called the "Big Band Era." Some of the others were Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. In the nineteen thirties and nineteen forties Artie Shaw was one of the most popular musicians and bandleaders in the United States. Just a few notes from his clarinet could start people dancing. His music sold millions of records. It still is difficult to listen to an old Artie Shaw recording and not tap your foot in time with the music. Or want to dance. Or sing along with his great sound. 2 Listen to Shaw on the clarinet and his band play part of a song recorded in Hollywood, California in nineteen forty. It is called "Summit Ridge Drive." (MUSIC) Artie Shaw was born in New York City in nineteen ten. His name was Arthur Arshawsky. His parents were poor immigrants who had come to the United States from Eastern Europe. -
Randy Aldcroft 2 JAZZ DUETS for Tenor & Bass Trombones Volume II Randy Aldcroft 1
These duets were written for the intermediate and advanced student interested in playing jazz. The range of notes gets higher and the duets get harder with each volume. The chord changes are included to help learn the structure and chord progressions, and so the duets may be played with a rhythm section if desired. Learn a little piano so you may visualize and hear the chord structures and follow their patterns. “Roll” those 8th notes. Keep the duets “swinging”. - Randy Aldcroft 2 JAZZ DUETS for Tenor & Bass Trombones Volume II randy aldcroft 1. q=128 > ° œ ˙ œ > œ œ œ > ? b3 Œ Œ œ bœ Œ Œ Œ nœ œ bœ Œ Œ Trombone b 4 F7 B¨7 F7 B¨7 - 3 j 3 3 j 3 ? b3 ‰‰ œ ‰‰ œ Œ Bass Trombone ¢ b 4 œ œ œ œ ˙ ™ œ œ œ œ œ ˙ ™ œ œ 5 > > ™ > nœ> ™ - > ™ bœ> ™ > ™ ° nœ œ œ œ bœ> ™ ˙ ™ ˙ ™ œ œ ˙ œ œ ˙ ? bb Œ ‰ F7 B¨7 EØ7 A7(b9) D‹7 BØ7 E7(b9) AØ7 > D7(b9) > > > œ> ™ b-œ > ™ œ ™ > ™ ? b ™ œ #˙ ™ nœ œ ˙ ‰ œ #˙ ¢ b ˙ ™ œ œ ™ nœ œ > > ° 13 nœ> ™ œ ™ #œ> ™ nœ> ™ b˙ ™ ˙ ™ œ œ ˙ œ bœ> ? bb Œ Œ A¨Ø7 > ™ D¨7(b9) G¨Œ„Š7 C7(b9) F7 B¨7 bœ> ™ bœ > > j 3 3 j 3 ? b œ ™ œ ™ b˙ ™ nœ œ œ ‰ ‰ ¢ b œ œ œ œ ˙ ™ œ œ œ œ œ 3 19 > > ™ > ° nœ œ œ œ œ bœ> nœ œ œ œ bœ> ™ ˙ ™ ˙ ™ œ œ ˙ ? bb Œ Œ Œ Œ F7 B¨7 - F7 B¨7 EØ7 A7(b9) D‹7 > > > ? b œ Œ œ ™ œ #˙ ™ nœ œ ˙ ¢ b ˙ ™ œ ˙ ™ œ œ ™ nœ œ Copyright © 2015 Randy Aldcroft - All Rights Reserved Published and Distributed by Cherry Classics Music www.CherryClassics.com 14 Aldcroft - Jazz Duets Vol. -

History of the Drum Set
History of the Drum Set The drum set is as American as baseball, hotdogs, and apple pie. The instrument as it currently exists has seen a great deal of evolution and development. From its infancy at the start of the 20 th century to the innovations that are currently taking place, it has developed into the most visible and widely used instruments in the percussion family. Late 1800’s Brass bands were the most common type of instrumental ensemble in the United States in the later half of the 19 th century. Every town in America had bandstands were concerts were held and perhaps the reason for their existence can be attributed in part to the Civil War. Every military unit had its own squad of musicians, usually formed according to locality. Occasionally some bands stayed together after the war, while others disbanded. Each brass band consisted of two or more drummers that played snare, bass, and cymbals. In addition to marching parade commitments, these bands sometimes moved “indoors” entertaining patrons in concert providing music for occasions such as picnics and town socials. When these groups moved inside, the standard instrumentation was cut down somewhat for practical reasons. Because of this, the need for two or more drummers decreased and resourceful inventions began to flourish. The concept of one drummer playing two or more rhythms was made possible through the creation of the snare drum stand and bass drum pedal. Before the snare stand, drummers would hang the drum from their shoulder with a strap or sling, or position the drum on a chair. -
