Biyoloji ve Çevre Bilimi eğitimi alan Uzuner, Türkiye' de Hacettepe Üniversitesi ve ODTÜ' de, ayrıca Norveç, ABD ve Finlandiya'daki üniversitelerde çalışmalarda bulundu. Kitapları 1992'den bu yana Türkiye'de Ulusal En İyi Satış listelerinde yer almaktadır ve dört ayrı dilde yayımlanmıştır. Remzi Kitabevi için yabancı edebî yayımlar konusunda editörlük yaptı ve şu anda Alfa-Everest Yayınları için yabancı edebî yayımlar konusunda edebî danışmanlık yapmaktadır. Balık İzlerinin Sesi romanı ile 1993 yılında Yunus Nadi Roman Ödülü' ne lâyık görülen Uzuner, Kumral Ada Mavi Tuna romanı ile 1998 yılında İstanbul Üniversitesi Yılın Romanı ödülünü aldı. Son dönemde Kumral Ada Mavi Tuna adlı romanı, Mediterranean Waltz adı ile İtalya, Yunanistan ve İsrail'de yayımlandı. Ayrıca İngiltere'de kısa öykülerden oluşan A Cup of Turkish Coffee adlı kitabı yayımlandı.1996 yılında University of Iowa tarafından onursal akademisyen yazar seçildi. Kuzey Afrika, Kuzey Amerika ve Avrupa' da uzun yıllar geçiren Buket Uzuner, şimdi İstanbul' da yaşamaktadır. Buket Uzuner was born in Ankara in 1955. She studied molecular biology and graduated from Hacettepe University. After completing her study on environmental science at Bergen University and Michigan University, she worked as a research assistant at Tampere Technical University in Finland, and Middle East Technical University, Turkey. Uzuner won Yunus Nadi Prize for her novel “The Sound of Fishsteps (Balık İzlerinin Sesi)” in 1993. Her novel “Mediterranean Waltz (Kumral Ada- Mavi Tuna)” was awarded the Best Novel of 1998 by the University of Istanbul. Her books have been translated into eight languages. Uzuner has been presented as an honorary fellow writer by the University of Iowa since 1996. In 2004, she received an award of appreciation from the senator of Middle East Technical University. She has travelled widely in North Africa, North America and Europe. Currently, Uzuner lives and works in Istanbul. The Sound of Fishsteps by Buket Uzuner. Your Custom Text Here. Buket Uzuner is a Turkish writer with a large number of novels to her name. She is an intrepid traveler and environmentalist whose activism ranges from nuclear power to freeing dolphins. She talks to Dan Bloom about her works and the connections between literature and environmentalism. This interview was first published in the 5511hour. Dan: You have heard a little about my promotional work with the rising new literary genre that's been dubbed cli-fi. As a Turkish novelist who tackles environmental issues and a global eco-critic and intellectual on a par with such luminaries as Margaret Atwood and Amitav Ghosh, do you think novels about climate change issues like Barbara Kingsolver Flight Behavior can help change public attitudes about the very real risks of future global warming impact events? Buket: I think “cli-fi” is an ingenious term, and my admiration of it may come from a selfish reason because “cli-fi” -- in some way -- summarizes most of my literary work of 25 years. As my very first novel Two Green Otters was related to the Turkish Green Party, my eco-dystopian novel Sound of Fishsteps and the latest novels Nature Quartet (a tetrology) are dealing with climatic and environmental issues. That could be one of the reasons why I fell in love with the term “cli-fi” at first sight! And, thank you for putting my name up there with one of my literary heroes, Margaret Atwood, along with other notable writers Barbara Kingsolver and Amitav Ghosh whose novels are significant in the cli-fi literary genre. And, yes, I do think novels, basically stories , are the best key to open the locked consciousness and blurred conscience of adult Sapiens. Stories are the finest way to search deep inside of one’s soul and let her/him digest the new and/or old but forgotten lessons. Maybe that’s why all monotheist holy books are full of stories in order to explain to the believers what is moral and immoral? Yet, very similar fantastic stories can be found in all mythologies in different cultures and traditions while mythologies are considered “dead-religions” by some researchers like Joseph Campbell. Stories are capable of making us understand ourselves and the planet because they teach us to emphathize with “the others”. And nature, all trees, seas, earth, all animals, air, even bacterias and viruses are “the others” beside the minorities and misfits on this planet. In my humble opinion human civilization started to destroy his home; the planet after starting to play the role of the “lords of nature.” Dan: And is Flight Behavior translated into Turkish now, and what is its title in Turkish? Buket: Such a happy coincidence! Yes, several of Barbara Kingsolver’s books were already translated into Turkish but Flight Behavior is not yet to be. Right now my Turkish Publisher Everest Co. is in touch with her copyright agency and hopefully the novel will be soon published in Turkish. We have different ideas for Turkish titles for Flight Behavior My suggestion is Butterflies

Feminist speculative fiction begun to be produced in the West in the 1960s and 70s, roughly, whereas in Turkey, the production begun as late as the 1990s, which corresponds to the revival of women’s movement in Turkey after the 1980s.

    TURKISH PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION REPORT ON FREEDOM TO PUBLISH TURKEY (JUNE 2012-2013) REPORT ON FREEDOM TO PUBLISH (June 2012 – June 2013) Lawsuits and Investigations against Books, Books Pulled Off the Shelf There was a case opened against Mehmet Baransu claiming that in his book Karargah (Headquarters), he has ‘’made certain information public that should have been kept secret’’ and ‘’attempted to influence the judiciary’’, in violation of Turkish Penal Code (TCK) 336 and 288. Baransu proved to be innocent on May 7, 2012 from the lawsuit where his sentence could have ranged from a year and a half to six years. Kemal Dal and Hıdır Altun, DTP and BDP administrators, were sentenced to prison due to the allegation that they were doing propaganda for an illegal organization with books of Abdullah Öcalan, violating Anti Terror Law (TMK) 7/2. Dal and Altun were arrested in front of the door of a shipping company’s shop in Izmir, Bornova when they were picking up packages of books, under the allegation that these packages comprised of illegal print media; then, they were released. Izmir Prosecution Office decided to confiscate 30 packages of books that arrived to shipping company because there was a precedent case from Siirt Lower Criminal Court, where it was decided that 2970 books would be confiscated which included Abdullah Öcalan’s plea to European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and books that included his other pleas published by Aram Publishing such as Uygarlık, Maskeli Tanrılar ve Örtük Krallar Çağı (Era of Civilization, Masked Gods and Covered Kings), Kapitalist Uygarlık, Maskesiz Tanrılar ve Çıplak Krallar Çağı (Era of Capitalist Civilization, Unmasked Gods, Naked Kings) and Özgürlük Sosyolojisi (Sociology of Freedom).

    ANNUAL UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA UNDERGRADUATE CONFERENCE ON SLAVIC AND EAST/CENTRAL EUROPEAN STUDIES 2015 STUDENT ABSTRACTS Colton Hennick [email protected] Portland State University "Georgian-Accented Russian" Given the current political tensions between the United States and Russia, students of Russian on federally funded programs such as the Critical Language Scholarship and Boren scholarship have been sent to post-Soviet republics to study instead of Russia. One such country is Georgia, where the CLS program was held for the summer of 2014. According to the survey conducted by the Caucasus Research Resource Center, “the percentage of the respondents in Georgia with high Russian proficiency is consistently around 70%.” Given the high percentage of proficient Russian speakers in Georgia, it is important to understand whether their Russian differs from Contemporary Standard Russian as this is the kind of Russian students might encounter while studying in places like Georgia. Focusing on the accented speech of a number of native Georgian speakers, I will examine the features that separate Georgian-accented Russian from Contemporary Standard Russian including: the placement of stress, softening of hard consonants, and lack of vowel reduction. I will also discuss the ways in which the same speaker exhibits variable accent patterns depending on the context of the conversation.
