Trombetti Budriesi, Firenze 2006, pp. 143-163 © dell’autore – Distribuito in formato digitale da “Reti Medievali”] Il castello o meglio la domus detta el Bentivoglio, costruita per essere luogo di svaghi e di delizie e segno della posizione e del prestigio raggiunti dal suo proprietario, ha avuto, sin dall’edificazione, anche un altro ruolo, che l’ha caratterizzata nel lungo periodo, diventando, in seguito alla cacciata dei Bentivoglio da Bologna, funzione pressoché unica, che ne ha permesso, tra vicende alterne, la sopravvivenza nel corso di quasi cinque secoli: è stata, ed è rimasta, il centro di una importante e redditizia possessione agricola, dotata di macchine mosse dalla forza dell’acqua. Il percorso che, dalla seconda metà del Quattrocento, ha portato la tenuta di Bentivoglio, tra XIX e XX secolo, con l’ultimo proprietario, il marchese Carlo Alberto Pizzardi, a essere una delle più avanzate aziende agricole italiane, segue, tra gli alti e bassi della produzione agricola della zona e squarci di informazione alternati a silenzi della documentazione, un filo che si dipana attraverso un territorio che, nei secoli, ha mantenuto analoghe caratteristiche, pure attraverso successivi interventi. La famiglia Bentivoglio era entrata in possesso di terre situate a S. Maria in Duno e a Ponte Poledrano, con gli immobili connessi, tra cui i mulini sul canale Navile, nel 1441, quando Niccolò Piccinino, luogotenente generale dei Visconti, donò ad Annibale Bentivoglio, padre di Giovanni II, i beni confiscati alla famiglia Canetoli, come risarcimento per i danni subiti dalla famiglia, in particolare da Antongaleazzo, nella lotta contro la fazione dei Canetoli, che aveva provocato gravi tensioni e scontri a Bologna tra il 1428 e il 14411. -

Anne de France: Art et pouvoir en 1500, acts of a colloquium that took place in Moulins in March 2012, edited by Thierry Crépin-Leblond and Monique Chatenet, contains relatively brief but invaluable chapters stocked with new information and original interpretations. It is divided in two: the first half is dedicated to studies about Anne of France, daughter of Louis XI and sister of his son Charles VIII, and the other half to her patronage and that of other notable, politically active noblewomen--regents and queens--influenced by Anne circa 1500. Throughout the entire volume, the authors seek to indicate ways in which these women’s acts and patronage of art and architecture exhibit some kind of political authority. They unearth documents, explore the visual valence of objects and architecture, and examine literary texts to argue that Anne of France, Margaret of Austria, and Anne of Brittany played a significant role in the history of Europe in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. A major strength of this collection is how authors are deeply engaged with drilling down into the documents to find new material to apply to the questions they pose or offer new interpretations of little-known material. -

Its author was Sir George Hill, who had studied the collection in depth when it was still T in Dreyfus' hands in the Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris. In a prefatory note, Hill observed that 'keenly as Gustave Dreyfus appreciated all his beautiful things, he had a particularly soft place in his heart for the Italian medals, and ... he would have agreed with the German critic who declared that the medallic art was par excellence the art of the Renaissance, the expression of the quintessence of the spirit of that age.' The preface continues with the tribute: 'His was perhaps the finest collection that has ever been in the hands of a private collector - the "perhaps" might be omitted, but that it is difficult to range the great collections in a true perspective.' Thanks to the Kress Foundation, the Dreyfus collection of medals was not dispersed, like so many other medallic collections, but is preserved intact in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, where it bears out Hill's claim to be regarded as the finest private collection of medals ever to have been formed. -

398 Reviews of books Denley observes that the history of the Studio dominates not only the historiography of education in Siena but also the documentary series maintained by various councils and administrators in the late medieval and Renaissance eras. The commune was much more concerned about who taught what at the university level than at the preparatory level. Such an imbalance is immediately evident when comparing the size of Denley’s own two studies. Nevertheless, he has provided a useful introduction to the role of teachers in this important period of intellectual transition, and the biographical profiles will surely assist other scholars working on Sienese history or the history of education. The answer depends, of course, on one’s definition of Renaissance; whether one sees it mainly as an era of rebirth of the arts in imitation of the masters of classical antiquity or not. In Germany, the Romans stayed only in part of what is now the Bundesrepublik Deutschland, while a large Germania Libera (as the Romans called it) continued with her rustic but wholesome customs described by Tacitus as an example to his fellow countrymen. The Roman influence on Germanic lifestyle was limited and transitory and therefore a rebirth of classical antiquity could only be a complicated one. Not even the Italian peninsula had a homogeneous Roman antiquity (and it would be difficult to give precise chronological and geographical definitions of antiquity per se) but in the case of German Renaissance art the potential models needed to be explored in depth and from an extraneous vantage point.
