I IE story of how Dr. Howarth and I became resi T dents of the parish of Downe, Kent— Darwin’s parish— and interested in its affairs, both ancient and modern, begins at No. 80 Wimpole Street, the home of a distinguished surgeon, Sir Buckston Browne, on the morning of Thursday, September 1, 1927. On opening The Times of that morning and running his eye over its chief contents before sitting down to breakfast, Sir Buck ston observed that the British Association for the Ad vancement of Science—of which one of the authors of this book was and is Secretary— had assembled in Leeds and that on the previous evening the president had delivered the address with which each annual meeting opens. -

PREFACE account of the Saxon Cathedral at Canterbury, and of the Saxon Saints buried therein, was written primarily for new THISmembers of Archaeological Societies, as well as for general readers who might desire to learn something of its history and organiza- tion in those far-away days. The matter has been drawn from the writings of men long since passed away. Their dust lies commingled with that of their successors who lived down to the time when this ancient Religious House fell upon revolutionary days, who witnessed its dissolution as a Priory of Benedictine Monks after nine centuries devoted to the service of God, and its re-establishment as a College of secular canons. This important change, taking place in the sixteenth century, was, with certain differences, a return to the organization which existed during the Saxon period. -

Alcenius had designs on a publication treating of the Anglo-Saxon coins found in Finland, and to this end he compiled a list of the same. One part of this list containing most of the coins of Aethelred, along with a short introduction, was printed already, but owing to some cause or other the issue of the essay was discontinued some time before the death of the author. Although the original list has not now been found fit for use, 'the investigations of Mr. Alcenius have anyhow been of good service for the composition of this paper. The list now appears in a revised and also completed form. Further on in this essay short descriptions of the coin types have been inserted before the list of the coins of each king, and there has been an attempt made to a chronological arrangement of the types. Mr. Alcenius also tried to fix the relative and absolute chronology of the coins of Aethelred, but I regret to say that I could not take the same point of view as he as to the sequence of the types. -

For the first time, a single king laid claim to the whole of Britain (Holland 3). Athelstan was the first king to claim the title Rex totius Britanniae (King of all Britain). He succeeded to the throne in 924, captured York from the Danes in 927 and invaded Scotland in 934. In 937 Athelstan met an alliance of the Norse, the Scots and the Strathclyde Britons in The Battle of Brunanburh and emerged victoriously. It was this battle that unified all of England for the first time and “forged a political map of the future that remains with us [in modernity], arguably making The Battle of Brunanburh one of the most significant battles in the long history not just of England, but of the whole of the British Isles” (Livingston 1). Athelstan reigned until his death in 939. Athelstan’s reign marked a pivotal period in the history of Britain and yet Athelstan is one of the most scarcely-recorded late Anglo-Saxon kings, both before and after the Norman Conquest. -

A New Type for Archbishop Wulfred
343 Miscellanea occasionally they were struck entirely in lead—further evidence of the great scarcity of copper. A practical result of this modification of my former opinion is that the probable burial dates of late hoards (c. 470, c. 500, and c. 550) in the lists of hoards appended to my various papers should be put back some years (say, to c. 450, c. 470, and c. 500 respectively). These re- marks do not apply to the Richborough Radiate hoard (" Richborough IV") and must be modified in the case of the Bermondsey hoard, which should be put back from c. 500 to c. 450. PHILIP V. HILL A NEW TYPE EOR ARCHBISHOP WULFRED WULFRED was Archbishop of Canterbury from 805 to 832 and as was the custom in those days he had an issue of coins struck at the Canter- bury mint in his name. This particular coin of his (Fig. above) is of a hitherto unpublished type and until recently was thought to be the only one in existence, but there was another in the Ryan sale (lot 595, bought by the British Museum) differing slightly in minor details (PL. A, 1). Both coins are unfortunately chipped. The type was unknown to Ruding and Hawkins. The obverse bears a facing tonsured bust of the archbishop within an inner circle with the legend WLFR.EDI [AR]CHIEPI*C0PI. This is a similar obverse to that which Brooke classifies in English Coins as Group 3, no. 4, presumed to have been issued from 825 to 832; in other words towards the end of Wulfred's term of office. -

The Cloister and Beyond: Regulating the Life of the Canonical Clergy in Francia, from Pippin III to Louis the Pious Stephen Ling Submitted for the degree of Ph.D School of History (2015) University of Leicester 0 For Lucy. 1 Abstract Stephen Ling: The Cloister and Beyond: Regulating the Life of the Canonical Clergy in Francia, from Pippin III to Louis the Pious. Frankish ecclesiastics exerted great effort in defining and regulating the life of the canonical clergy between the reigns of Pippin III and Louis the Pious. Church councils and assemblies convened by Carolingian kings, such as the Synod of Ver (755) and the Council of Aachen (816), sought to impose order. These councils distinguished between three interrelated groups: the secular clergy, the canonical clergy and monks. Separating the lives of these orders was no easy task, as there was siginificant debate over the definition of each group. In response to these queries and admonitions, bishops regulated the life of the clergy in their diocese. Notably, Chrodegang of Metz (d. 766) produced the first extant rule for canons. This text has attracted much historiographical attention and is often seen as providing the basis for the influential Canonical Institute produced at the Council of Aachen (816). This thesis examines the interplay between central attempts to establish the norms of the life of canons and local response to such efforts. Focusing on the latter demonstrates the variety of appraoches taken towards the regulation of the clergy in this period and concludes that the significance and impact of Chrodegang’s Rule has been overstated. -
How Lyminge Parish Church Acquired an Invented Dedication
ANTIQUARIANS, VICTORIAN PARSONS AND RE-WRITING THE PAST: HOW LYMINGE PARISH CHURCH ACQUIRED AN INVENTED DEDICATION ROBERT BALDWIN For more than a century, the residents of Lyminge, on the North Downs in East Kent, have taken for granted that the parish church is dedicated to St Mary and St Ethelburga. Yet for many centuries before that, it was known as the church of St Mary and St Eadburg. The dedication to St Mary, the Virgin, is ancient and straightforward to explain, for it appears in the earliest of the surviving charters forLyminge dated probably to 697. 1 The second part of the dedication, whether this is correctly St Ethelburga or St Eadburg, is also likely to pre-date the Norman Conquest for both are clearly Anglo-Saxon names. But the uncertainty over the dedication invites investigation to understand who the patron saint actually is and the cause of the change, which is an unusual event by any standards. At first sight, St Ethelburga is apparently also easy to explain. Although there were a number of St Ethelburgas, the one traditionally connected with Lyminge was Queen LEthelburh2, daughter of LEthelberht I, King of Kent, and widow of Edwin, King of Northumbria. The story of her marriage to Edwin, his conversion to Christianity and the beginning of the conversion of Northumbria in the 620s was recorded by Bede, writing around a century later.3 AfterEdwin's death in battle in 633, Bede noted that LEthelburh returned to Kent where her brother Eadbald had become king. Other sources4 recounted that the king allowed his sister to retire to his estate at Lyminge where she established a 'minster'5 and subsequently died in 647.6 A dedication to St Ethelburga makes sense in the historical context ofLyminge. -

Season 1, Episode 5: The Nordic Cross Flag: Crusade and Conquest April 22, 2020 Show Transcript Welcome back to another episode of Why the Flag?, the show that explores the stories behind the flags, and how these symbols impact our world, our histories, and ourselves. I’m Simon Mullin. On the last episode, we discussed the Y Ddraig Goch – the red dragon flag of Wales – and the deep historical and mythological origins of the red dragon on a green and white ground. We traveled back nearly 2,000 years to the Roman conquest of Britannia and the introduction of the dragon standard to the British Isles by the Iranian-Eastern European Sarmatian cavalry stationed at Hadrian’s Wall. We explored how the dragon was adopted by the Roman army as a standard, and after their withdrawal from Britannia, its mythological rise as the symbol of Uther Pendragon and King Arthur, and then its resurrection by Henry VII – whose 15th Century battle standard closely resembles the flag of Wales we see today. National mythology plays a significant role in shaping our identities and how we see ourselves as a community and as a people. And, as we found in episode 4, these mythologies are instrumental in shaping how we design and emotionally connect to our national flags. We’re going to continue this theme about the cross-section of history, mythology, and national identity on the episode today as we discuss the rise of the Nordic Cross, a symbol that shapes the flags of all eight Nordic and Scandinavian countries today, and rules over nearly 28 million citizens speaking 15 distinct languages. -
