Year 7 Technology Snibston Visit

On Wednesday 25th June 71 students from year 7 had a brilliant day out at the Snibston Science and Technology Park in Coalville. During the day they experienced and worked through a series of exhibitions, many of which were interactive with a key focus on the technology behind the developments which many take for granted. The students also took part in a colliery tour where they experienced the winding house, operations rooms and most importantly the explosives store ! The Snibston staff repeated throughout the day how well behaved our students and the high level of Q&A on the tours. An enjoyable day for all. Many thanks for the support of the CTK staff on the day as well to Mr Baxter, Miss Pennant, Mr Johnson and Mr Stack.

Girls’ Football News July 2014

We re-launched the Girls’ football team this year and matches have been very sporadic! However we have had a very strong core of girls who have come every Tuesday after school to train. Their skills have really im- proved this year and are developing into great footballers. Next year we have been entered into the county and national Cup so are very excited about competing in non-friendly matches. The team will be a combined Years 8 & 9 team with room for a few talented Year 7s too! Unfortunately this year ended on a sour note, as our final game was our only loss of the season against a very well established Carlton Le Willows side. Well done to the girls and especially to Anais Keeling and to Nia Kirwan-Thomas, who will be our Captain and Vice-Captain respectively; trials for the team will be in September.

The sun was shining and the coaches started everyone off with some warm up activities that were fun and introduced everyone to the sport of cricket. The morning was spent practising the skills and working as a team, everything paid off in the afternoon when the real games began. CTK had a team of nine from ICE and they were full of energy and gave 150% to the day. They gave their all and beat everyone and made the final play off with Redhill Academy, who are normally the winners in most of the games that we have been too in the past, we knew this match was going to be the ultimate challenge. Action packed afternoon at Our Lady and St Edwards!

On Friday 13th June staff from the Technology Department visited Our Lady and St Edwards Primary School for an action packed afternoon. Working with the year 5 students Mr Bull and Mr Johnson took them through the practical activity to create a book mark which they shaped, finished and manipulated on the strip heater. Students were left with a souvenir from the laser cutter to show them what can be achieved in Technology at CTK. A fun filled afternoon leaving the students wanting more.

I can’t believe we’ve come to the end of another year here at Christ the King, it has flown by in a blur of fun and happy memories. This have been my first year full time at Christ the King and it has been such a great year; looking back at our retreats to the Briars, the Good Shepherd Confirmation, lots of cake sales, our Easter and Christmas Liturgies, House Masses, Lunchtime Masses, the great work of the Chaplaincy Team, the Philosophy and Ethics Day, Year 7’s Ethos day at the Cathedral and many more it has been such a jam packed year that will take some topping.

Transition One of the great things about this time of year is that I get to take part in our transition sessions. This is when we go into our partner primary schools and get to know the year 6s who will be joining us in September; then those who aren’t in our partner primary schools come to us for an afternoon. This is a great experience for me as I get to meet this great bunch of young people and along with Mrs Mansell we set aside any fears they may have, answer their questions and have lots of fun. We then welcome them during their Induction Days and introduce them to their new school. For me that is how we pray as a community, its importance and start their journey from children in faith to adults in faith. I’ve had lots of fun on these sessions, our Induction Evening with parents and the two Induction days. I can’t wait to welcome them back as fully fledged students and members of our Community and I hope their singing is as good for our Welcome Mass as during these days!

Walsingham On Sunday 15th June two Students from our Walsingham House and I joined the Diocean pilgrimage to Walsingham. This was the first time that Christ the King has joined this pilgrimage and we hope to develop this further next year, and the years to come. Pilgrimage is very important to our community as all our Houses are called after places of pilgrimage in Britain and we are very actively involved in the Lourdes Pilgrimage. Walsingham is a shrine dedicated to Mary that dates back to the 11th Century! Groups from the Diocese go every year and this year we joined them walking in procession of over a mile from the Anglican Shrine to the Catholic Shrine! Our students were asked to read bidding prayers as well as walking near the front carrying the school banner! We look forward to bringing many more students next year.

House and Lunch Masses This half term we had our last House and lunch time Masses of the year. Fr Kevin Clark from Melton Mowbray came to celebrate Iona’s House Mass for St Columba’s day. Fr Kevin used to teach Science here at CtK for many years before becoming a Priest so it was great to invite him to celebrate the first House Mass for Iona, the Science House. The year 9s have been leading our Lunch time Masses this half term and it has been great to see how enthusiastically they have joined in this. Learning about the Mass and preparing the prayers, readings and other ministries of the Mass. These celebrations have been wonderful this term and having our students be able to get hands on in organising and planning a Mass; as well as all the items used in Mass… we may even have a few budding priests!! Lourdes When you are reading this we may well be in Lourdes!!! It’s been a lot of work to get here but that’s one of the wonderful parts of the pilgrimage that makes it even more enjoyable. We are very grateful for the support, donations, sponsorship and gifts we have received from so many people in our community, especially the great supports from Sacred Heart Parish and the Good Shepherd Church who have denoted approximately £1000. We were blown away by the incredible generosity for our sponsored wheelchair push, we collectively pushed each other for 14 miles! Even through the rain!!

In the first week of July we gathered together as a community to prepare spiritually for our pilgrimage, our Liturgy was led by Fr Simon Gillespie, the Deputy Director of the Lourdes pilgrimage. Fr Simon led us in a reflection of the joy of Lourdes that reminds us of the joy we should feel everyday following Christ. Andrew Kelly from the Catenians association was also present and presented us with a bursary of £400 for our fund. Mr Kelly’s child used to attend CtK and he said how great a pleasure it was to come and support the work of our sixth formers. We prayed for our pilgrimage and all those who had enabled us to go; the Liturgy concluded with Fr Simon giving us a special blessing for pilgrims. We will keep all of you in our prayers as we answer Our Lady’s call to come to Lourdes on pilgrimage in prayer and service.

Enjoy the Summer

So that is it the end of a very jam-packed year! I’ve really enjoyed this first full year of being the Lay Chaplain to Christ the King. I’d really like to thank all the priests who have supported us in our various liturgies, visiting us, praying for us and much more: Canon Philip Ziomek, Fr Neil Peoples Fr Biju Joseph, , Fr Bill Gull, Fr Robbie O’Callaghan, Fr Kevin Clark, Fr John Cahill, Fr John Martin and Fr Andrew Cole. We would especially like to thank Fr Eamonn O’Hara for his incredible support over many years as Parish Priest at Sacred Heart and St Bernadette, he is held in great respect by students and staff, for being a wonderful Priest, Governor and friend to the School; we wish him a very happy retirement and he is very welcome to pop in anytime.

I would also like to thank the Chaplaincy Team of Fraser, Ania, Georgina, Finley, James, Michael and Tap; they have worked really hard this year and done so much in developing the faith of the school.

I wish all of you a very restful, happy and safe summer; enjoy the holidays if you are going away or not and I look forward to walking in faith with you again next year.

God Bless

Joe Hopkins Lay Chaplain. CTK’s A level and AS level Art Exhibition – ‘Reflections’

On Wednesday 25th June we opened our doors for the annual CTK A / AS Level Art Exhibition. The exhibi- tion included coursework and exam work from all our 6th form Art students. Once again the students amazed everyone with their imagination, creativity and skill. The artwork, the drinks and delicious nibbles (expertly served by our year 12 students) resulted in a truly lovely evening. We are incredibly proud of all our students and would like to wish our year 13s every success as they embark on their next education adventure in September.

Who would have ever thought it would have been so successful? A few weeks ago Mr Cuomo had an idea that students could take part in a competition in an attempt to collect all of the litter in school and in the local community. He anticipated a group of maybe 30 students who would be willing to take part, but when 50 students turned up to the provisional meeting, he was surprised, but very pleased. When more than 80 (yes 80) students arrived on the actual day to take part it was clear that this competition had really captured the imagination and that students really wanted to do something special for the school and for the community. On the 10th of July, despite numerous weather forecasters predicting rain, it was a beautiful day and students arrived at 12:15 for an early lunch and to collect their pickers, gloves and bin bags. They then processed to the school field as the starting point for the competition and the scenes were incredible. Mr Cuomo counted down, 3…2…1…GO! The rush of students to the ‘hotspots’ was astonishing and it was clear that many had carefully planned out their strategy. Students then had 20 minutes to collect as much litter as they could from anywhere in school in the knowledge that the ‘spies’ were out and those who raided bins would be disqualified! When the 20 minutes were up and students returned to the Hall for the shortlisting. The eventual winners were the pairings of Amy Hoyle and Poppy Scoffings and Isobelle England and Millie Morris, who received a £20 Victoria Centre Voucher. The runners-up were the pairings of Callum Barnett and Sean English and Holly Barnett and Abigail Cassey. These 8 students then had the opportunity to go out into the local community around the school and to ‘tidy-up’ the local streets, accompanied by Mr Cuomo and Mr Brogan. On their return, they were treated to juice and biscuits in the Principal’s office as a well-deserved reward for all of their efforts. All of the students who took part perfectly demonstrated the tremendous attitude of a Christ the King Student. They proved themselves (yet again) to be students of great quality, who we are extremely proud of and we would like to thank them all for their efforts. Well done to each and every one of you!
