‘An excellent information/starting point for a new subject leader. Good ideas to use in action plans which can easily be implemented.’ - course participant 2018

Developing the role of the Subject Leader (Advanced) Informed and active subject leadership is seen to be a key factor in moving science forward. Undoubtedly, where schools have a strong subject leader who is engaged and excited by science, with the capacity to impact and influence, change takes place and outcomes for children respond accordingly. During this day course you will explore the nature of your leader- ship and consider strategies that you might use to influence others and impact on the teaching and learning of science in your school. A series of crucial updates will also be provided, ensuring that you feel confident and equipped to support others in, for example, assessment matters, working scientifically, subject knowledge and OfSTED related concerns.

Assessing Primary Science All courses delivered by Nicola Beverley

Fit for purpose assessment (two day course) There is no one-size-fits-all approach to science assessment that works in all settings. However, these two (stand-alone) assessment courses will give teachers and subject leaders the opportunity to explore best practice drawn from schools, plus the chance to learn about freely-available resources that are available in the wider educational world.

These courses are ideal for primary school teachers and subject leaders who want to familiarise themselves with current expectations around assessment and children’s progress in science. Teachers will experience practical ways of exploring children’s understanding of key concepts and aspects of working scientifically, recognising that looking at and listening to children provides excellent (and valid) evidence of learning. The importance of planning for learning with assessment in mind will be emphasised throughout and strategies which inform the process will be considered.

Day 1 • An introduction to assessment policy and practice, providing access to latest updates around statutory assessment, the OfSTED perspective and other influencing factors. • Current best practice, under pinned by research while drawn from quality classroom practice • Whole-school strategies to develop understanding of progression and age related expectations • Informed record-keeping that is manageable, minimal and useful • Developing CPD and working with others to improve assessment practice.

Day 2 • Exploring children’s understanding of subject content and working scientifically across the key stages – practical activities, assessment resources and ideas for all year groups • ‘Evidence’ of learning in science and what that means for primary teachers • Moderation of learning outcomes – what constitutes ‘secure’ or better within children’s responses

Fit for purpose assessment (one day course) This one day course will provide an introduction to assessing primary science. You will:

• use a range of AfL strategies effectively to promote children’s learning • acquire a deeper understanding of progression • make confident and reliable teacher assessment of learning in science and identify children’s next steps Course Course code Date Venue Booking link

Science Curriculum Workshops Presenter: Nicola Beverley

Designed to improve the knowledge, understanding and skills of teachers, teaching assistants and subject leaders and enable highly productive practical science in the classroom. Join us for a whistle stop tour through science at each key stage or part key stage. Important questions will be explored, which are of relevance at each point across the key stages: • What are the big science ideas children need to know and understand? • How can I plan with assessment in mind? • What outcomes should I look for? • How should children use, apply and communicate their knowledge and understanding as they work scientifically? • How does our science curriculum deliver for children in our classes and schools?

As ever, plenty of practical ideas and useful strategies will be included to take back, use and/or share with colleagues.
