CONCEPTIONS OF TERROR(ISM) AND THE “OTHER” DURING THE EARLY YEARS OF THE RED ARMY FACTION by ALICE KATHERINE GATES B.A. University of Montana, 2007 B.S. Integral to this concept is the variable and highly subjective distinction made by various parties between “good” and “evil,” “right” and “wrong,” “us” and “them.” This thesis examines these concepts as they relate to the actions and manifestos of the Red Army Faction (die Rote Armee Fraktion) in 1970s Germany, and seeks to understand how its members became regarded as terrorists. -
5-28-1972 Bonn Gets Warning of More Bombings
11/4/11 From the archive: May 28 1972: Bonn gets warning of more bombings | Wor… Printing sponsored by: From the archive: May 28 1972 Bonn gets warning of more bombings May 28 1972: Neal Ascherson reports on the mood of panic across West Germany as Baader-Meinhof conduct a wave of attacks Neal Ascherson The Observ er, Saturday 27 May 1 97 2 l ar ger | smal l er The wave of bombings in West Germany, culminating on Wednesday in the death of three American soldiers when a parked car exploded at the United States Army headquarters at Heidelberg, may not yet have reached its peak. An urban guerrilla 'commando' has warned that there will be attacks in major cities next Friday, and proclaimed: 'The armed struggle has begun...only violence can help, when violence rules.' The attacks are deeply alarming the Government. Herr Genscher, Minister of the Interior, said that counter-intelligence squads would be enlarged. The head of the Federal Criminal Office booked 10 minutes of television on Thursday night to appeal to the public to act as detectives against the bombers. On Friday, Chancellor Brandt called an emergency conference of provincial Ministers of the Interior to study the problem. It seems likely that the urban guerrilla groups loosely united in the 'Red Army Faction' have become stronger in spite of a three-year manhunt. The nucleus was the group led by Ulrike Meinhof and Andreas Baader, both still at large although several members of the band have been killed in gun battles, captured or have given themselves up. -
THE EDUKATORS (German)
THE EDUKATORS (German) Activity Guide by Amanda K. Plummer Title: The Edukators Director: Hans Weingartner Country: Germany Year: 2004 Starring/Character: Daniel Brühl: Jan Julia Jentsch: Jule Stipe Erceg: Peter Burghart Klaußner: Hardenberg Writers: Katharina Held, Hans Weingartner Length: 127 minutes Language: German Location/Time of Action: Berlin, Germany, circa 2004 More information: http://imdb.com/title/tt0408777/ http://www3.ifcfilms.com/theedukators/ http://www.theedukators.com http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/edukators http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Edukators SUMMARY: The Edukators is about three young people living in present-day Berlin. Jule is a student who is horribly in debt as a result of an automobile accident. Early in the film she is evicted from her apartment, despite having finally paid six months worth of back rent. Her boyfriend, Peter, invites her to move in with him and his friend Jan. Jan and Peter are more than friends; they are partners in a political/social activism scheme. Calling themselves “The Edukators,” they break into the homes of extravagantly wealthy people. Instead of burglarizing the homes, they rearrange the valuables and leave a note with a lesson. The one at the beginning of the film reads, “Your days of plenty are numbered.” Jule learns of this secret life when Peter goes to Barcelona for three days, leaving her alone with Jan. Together, Jule and Jan break into the home of Hardenberg, the businessman whose car Jule crashed into. They leave Hardenberg a lesson that reads, “You have too much money.” Unfortunately, they also leave behind Jule’s cell phone. Jan and Jule return to Hardenberg’s house the following night to retrieve the phone and are interrupted by Hardenberg. -

Black Hands / Dead Section Verdict
FRINGE REPORT FRINGE REPORT www.fringereport.com Black Hands / Dead Section Verdict: Springtime for Baader-Meinhof London - MacOwan Theatre - March 05 21-24, 29-31 March 05. 19:30 (22:30) MacOwan Theatre, Logan Place, W8 6QN Box Office 020 8834 0500 LAMDA Baader-Meinhof.com Black Hands / Dead Section is violent political drama about the Baader-Meinhof Gang. It runs for 3 hours in 2 acts with a 15 minute interval. There is a cast of 30 (18M, 12F). The Baader-Meinhof Gang rose during West Germany's years of fashionable middle-class student anarchy (1968-77). Intellectuals supported their politics - the Palestinian cause, anti-US bases in Germany, anti-Vietnam War. Popularity dwindled as they moved to bank robbery, kidnap and extortion. The play covers their rise and fall. It's based on a tight matrix of facts: http://www.fringereport.com/0503blackhandsdeadsection.shtml (1 of 7)11/20/2006 9:31:37 AM FRINGE REPORT Demonstrating student Benno Ohnesorg is shot dead by police (Berlin 2 June, 1967). Andreas Baader and lover Gudrun Ensslin firebomb Frankfurt's Kaufhaus Schneider department store (1968). Ulrike Meinhof springs them from jail (1970). They form the Red Army Faction aka Baader-Meinhof Gang. Key members - Baader, Meinhof, Ensslin, Jan- Carl Raspe, Holger Meins - are jailed (1972). Meins dies by hunger strike (1974). The rest commit suicide: Meinhof (1976), Baader, Ensslin, Raspe (18 October 1977). The play's own history sounds awful. Drama school LAMDA commissioned it as a piece of new writing (two words guaranteed to chill the blood) - for 30 graduating actors. -

Hindenburg - the Last Flight
MIPCOM 2010 Line-Up Booth R31.01A Phone: +33 (0) 4 92 99 88 53 www.betafilm.com Visit our Screeningroom! Miniseries (2 x two hours, HD) Hindenburg - The Last Flight An awe-inspiring airship. A murderous conspiracy. A devastating catastrophe. Frankfurt, May 1937. The Hindenburg, the world's largest airship, is getting ready to fly to New York. A vehicle of staggering dimensions, it is the pride of Nazi Germany. But it has one serious flaw: due to an American embargo preventing the sale of helium to Germany, the Hindenburg is filled with highly combustible hydrogen gas instead. To Merten Kröger, an engineer who helped design the Hindenburg, the ship is a stick of dynamite waiting for a spark. The young man of great charm but modest means has fallen in love with the wealthy Jennifer van Zandt, the daughter of an American industrialist who wants to sell helium to the Germans. Just before the ship takes off, Merten learns how far the industrialist will go: he has had a bomb placed on the airship. What van Zandt didn't know is that his wife and daughter would be on board. Merten sneaks aboard the airship without a minute to spare. The young couple is reunited, and despite the great difference in class and social status between them, Jennifer, too, avows her love for Merten. He tells her of the bomb hidden somewhere on the airship. But there is little time for explanations, since Merten must flee: he is being sought for a murder he says he did not commit. -
