Whether it is the Christian Coalition or the opposing Christians for a New Political Vision, we seem to have entered a new era of religious self-assertive­ ness. There is no longer any reticence about promoting an avowedly religious point of view. Even for one who is sympathetic to the gen­ eral cause, it is difficult not to notice that we have lost the two major sources of restraint on the public espousal of religiously motivated proposals.
