THE LONG RED THREAD HOW DEMOCRATIC DOMINANCE GAVE WAY TO REPUBLICAN ADVANTAGE IN U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ELECTIONS, 1964-2018 by Kyle Kondik A thesis submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Baltimore, Maryland September 2019 © 2019 Kyle Kondik All Rights Reserved Abstract This history of U.S. House elections from 1964-2018 examines how Democratic dominance in the House prior to 1994 gave way to a Republican advantage in the years following the GOP takeover. Nationalization, partisan realignment, and the reapportionment and redistricting of House seats all contributed to a House where Republicans do not necessarily always dominate, but in which they have had an edge more often than not. This work explores each House election cycle in the time period covered and also surveys academic and journalistic literature to identify key trends and takeaways from more than a half-century of U.S. House election results in the one person, one vote era. GOVERNORS The Gubernatorial Elections of 2015: Hard-Fought Races for the Open Seats By Jennifer M. Jensen and Thad Beyle Only three governors were elected in 2015. Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi are the only states that hold their gubernatorial elections during the year prior to the presidential election. This means that these three states can be early indicators of any voter unrest that might unleash itself more broadly in the next year’s congressional and presidential elections, and we saw some of this in the two races where candidates were vying for open seats. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) was elected to a second term, running in a state that strongly favored his political party. Both Kentucky and Louisiana have elected Democrats and Republicans to the governorship in recent years, and each race was seen as up for grabs by many political pundits. In the end, each election resulted in the governorship turning over to the other political party. State Senator Richard Posthumus: A Profile by David Kimball, Senior Consultant for Public Policy At age 40 Senator Dick Posthumus regularly is heralded as one of the brightest stars of Michigan's Republican Party. His star still is rising: The election that just gave Posthumus his third Senate term also propelled his close, longtime friend John Engler to the governorship, and in the Senate Republican caucus last week Posthumus won the majority leader's post, a position formerly held by Engler. Respected by his colleagues and widely considered a born politician with uncanny tactical instincts, Posthumus is unassumingly self-confident and wears an easy smile on a youthtd, untroubled countenance. He credits much of this interpemnal ease to the fact that he punctuates his time at the capitol with the daiIy commute to his AIto (near Grand Rapids) home where he grows cash crops on a 600-acre family farm. "You can get so deeply into politics that everything else becomes secondary and family life tends to be destroyed," he says. "When I first decided to xun I made a commitment that I was not going to let that happen-that my family was going to come first no matter what. One of the ways I accomplish that is by going home every night." Although Posthumus occasionally stays in Lansing after a late session, these exceptions are relatively rare. "When I get home, there are four kids dngaround hollering, and all of a sudden I'm back to reality. There's no lobbyist taking me out to dinner telling me what a great legislator I am." "I can honestly say," he muses, "that I could walk away from this job tomorrow-not without some feeling of loss-but with no regret. -

2016 Post-Election Briefing: Politics, Policy and Philanthropy November 16-17, 2016 Penn Quarter A & B, Grand Hyatt, 1000 H St NW, Washington, DC SPEAKER BIOS Sandra McAlister Ambrozy, Senior Program Officer, Human Services, The Kresge Foundation Sandra McAlister Ambrozy is a senior program officer with The Kresge Foundation’s Human Services Program. She joined Kresge in 1982 and has served in many roles during her time at the foundation. With more than 30 years of experience in philanthropy, Sandra has developed expertise in human services, arts and culture, green building initiatives and civil legal aid. She helps shape and refine grantmaking for the Human Services Program so Kresge’s philanthropic dollars are used effectively to advance innovative, multi-sectoral policy solutions in human services and foster the next generation of human services organizations. In particular, she helps nonprofit leaders structure their organizations, adapt to evolving forces in the field and access resources. Sandra was named as a 2016 Presidio Institute Fellow and is participating in the fellowship program to build cross-sector leadership skills to address complex social challenges. She also serves on the Steering Committee providing guidance and oversight to the Grantmakers Income Security Taskforce (GIST). Her work has been recognized with six Wilmer Shields Rich Awards from the Council on Foundations for creating transparency and accessibility in Kresge’s communications. Sandra also coordinated the Partnership to Raise Community Capital, a national initiative for community foundations. Alabama: Commandments, Amendments, and Defendants Patrick R. Cotter Alabama’s 2004 election was a quiet affair. Signs that a presidential campaign was occurring—candidate visits, partisan rallies, hard-hitting tele- vision commercials, or get-out-the-vote efforts—were largely missing from the state. The outcome of Alabama’s U.S. Senate race was a forgone conclu- sion from the beginning of the year. All of the state’s congressmen were easily reelected. Contests for the few state offices up for election in 2004 were generally both invisible and uncompetitive. The only part of the ballot that generated any interest—and even here it was limited—involved a pro- posed amendment to Alabama’s already long state constitution. Alabama’s 2004 election was also a clear Republican victory. Republi- cans George W. Bush and Richard Shelby easily carried the state in the presidential and U.S. Senate elections. The GOP kept it 5-to-2 advantage in Congressional seats. Republicans swept all the contested positions on the state Supreme Court. Alabama’s 2004 election campaign was not the first time the state had experienced a quiet presidential campaign. Nor was it the first in which Republicans did quite well. Both the 1988 and 2000 campaigns were also low-key affairs. Both were also campaigns that the GOP clearly won. These earlier low-key, Republican-winning, presidential campaigns did not significantly alter the state’s partisan politics. Rather, the close partisan balance that has characterized the state since the 1980s continued beyond these elections. Eisenhower. This thesis explores and examines why the emergence of a thriving suburban community that voted Republican occurred. This examination used a collection of numerous sources, primary and secondary. Newspapers served as the most important tool for discovering why the new suburbs aligned to Republicanism. The sources describe a suburban area that aligned with the Republican Party due to numerous reasons: race, Eisenhower’s popularity, the Cold War, and economic issues.
