    Haiku in Romania by Vasile Moldovan Romanian poets expressed their interest in Japanese culture as early as at the very beginning of the 20th century. Two classics of Romanian literature, Alexandru Macedonski and Vasile Alecsandri, were fascinated by the beauty of Japanese landscape poems, and wrote several poems inspired by classical Japanese literature. First Romanian essays on haiku and tanka appeared in the Iasi-based Literary Event magazine in 1904. In the same year, the poet Al Vlahuta published an essay titled “The Japanese Poetry and Painting” in the By the Fireside magazine; this essay contained a number of tanka and haiku poems. Poet Al. T. Stamatiad published the first haiku poems in Romanian language, 12 in total, in the anthology titled Tender Landscape, which won the Romanian Academy Prize. In the 1930s, the poet Ion Pillat experimented with one-line poems, many of which resembled haiku. His best miniatures appeared in his collection that he called- One-line Poems (1935). These poems usually had a caesura and comprised of thirteen to fourteen syllables. In the preface he claimed that even if his poems differ from mainstream haiku they should be regarded as a form of haikai poetry. Pillat’s book proved to be influential, and nowadays many Romanian poets follow this trend. At approximately the same time poet Traian Chelariu published Nippon soul, an anthology of classical Japanese poetry in his translations (incidentally, he translated it through German). Chelariu adhered to the 5-7-5 pattern, which afterwards influenced many Romanian authors of haiku. In 1942, Al. T. Stamatiad published Nippon Courtesan Songs.

The evaluation took place in 2013 in the framework of the project “Ready for innovating, ready for better serving the local needs - Quality and Diversity of the Romanian Universities”, which aims at strengthening core elements of Romanian universities, such as their autonomy and administrative competences, by improving their quality assurance and management proficiency. The evaluations are taking place within the context of major reforms in the Romanian higher education system, and specifically in accordance with the provisions of the 2011 Law on Education and the various related normative acts. While the institutional evaluations are taking place in the context of an overall reform, each university is assessed by an independent IEP team, using the IEP methodology described below. 1.1.     Vasile Alecsandri 1821 – 1890 He was a poet, playwright, folklorist, politician, minister, diplomat , founding member of the Romanian Academy, creator of Romanian theater and dramatic literature in Romania. Constantin Brancusi (1876, Hobita, Romania - 1957, Paris, France) was a Romanian sculptor with overwhelming contributions to the renewal of language and plastic vision in contemporary sculpture. Ion Creangă is considered to be one of the classics of Romanian literature, especially because of his autobiographical work "Memories from childhood". Ion Luca Caragiale is considered one of the greatest playwrights in Romanian language and literature, as well as one of its most important writers and a leading representative of local humor. Mihai Eminescu (1850- 1889) was a Romanian poet, prose writer and journalist; he is the most important poetic voice in Romanian literature. George Emil Palade (1912 - 2008) American science of Romanian origin, specialist in cell biology, awarded in 1974 the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. Teatrul Național Iași The National Theatre of Iasi It is the oldest national theatre and one of the most prestigious theatrical institutions in Romania. In 1956, it was given the name of the renowned Romanian playwright and poet VasileAlecsandri. Casa Poporului The Parliament of Romania It is the seat of the Parliament of Romania. Located on DealulArsenalului in central Bucharest (Sector 5), it is the largest administrative building in the worldwith a height of 84 metres. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes.

    The Carl Beck ; Papers in Russian & East European Studies Number 1607 Constantin Iordachi Citizenship, Nation­ and State-Building: The Integration of Northern Dobrogea into Romania, a. 1878-1913 Constantin Iordachi is currently an advanced Ph.D. candidate in comparative history at the Central European University, Budapest (expected defense: Fall 2002). He graduated from the University of Bucharest (BA and MA) and the Institute of Intemational Relations, University of Leeds (MA). He was also a visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh, and a Junior Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, in Washington D.C. Starting in the 2001/2002 academic year, Iordachi is a Local Faculty Fellow of the Civic Education Project at the Bab~-Bolyai University, Cluj (Romania), and a visiting lecturer at the ELTE University, Budapest (Hungary).     On Diffident and Dissident Practices: a Picture of Romania at the End of the 19th Century1 Roxana Patraș Abstract: The present paper explores diffident and dissident practices reflected by the political talk at the end of the 19th-century in Romania. Relying on Jacques Rancière’s theories on the ‘aesthetic regime of politics,’ the introduction sketches a historical frame and proposes a focus change: the relation between ‘politics’ and ‘aesthetics’ does not stand on a set of literary cases, but on political scripts as such. Thus, the hypotheses investigated by the next three parts can be formulated as follows: 1. though determined by an ideological direction (Conservative or Liberal), the political speech still preserves his tendency towards aesthetic autonomy. 2. oratorical merits (hinting at aesthetic autonomy) can turn into practices of political autonomy, diffidence and, then, dissidence. Methodologically, two types of aesthetic practices organize the chosen materials; both the diffident script and the theatre of dissidence help us to perceive how the philosophical and moral meaning of these practices could change into an ideology of dissidence. The formalization of diffident practices, their conversion to outspoken dissidence, also corresponds to the symmetrical symptom of unlimited authority; when old- time politicians warned on ‘Caesarism,’ ‘Vizierate,’ ‘Despotism,’ ‘Omnipotence’ or ‘Tyranny,’ the Romanian society had already been training for a long experience of ‘dictatorship.’ Keywords: diffident practices, dissidence, historical party, dictatorship, political speech I.     FOCUS Romanian Parliamentary Debate on the Decisions of the Congress of Berlin in the Years around 1878-1879 by Iulia Onac Abstract The Romanian parliamentary debate around the Congress of Berlin (1878-1879) offers a bird’s eye view of the evolution of antisemitic speech in Romania. Naturalization of the Jews - an issue raised by the Great European Powers during this Congress - came into conflict with the wishes of the Romania political class, which presently exploded into a violent antisemitic campaign in the political debates and public speeches. The “Jewish danger” presented by many intellectuals and politicians will be accompanied by the accusation that the Jews constitute a state within the state, a nation within the nation, both devoted to world conspiracy. Amidst this welter of accusations, antisemitic discourse grew heavy with racial arguments. But by far the main characteristic of the Romanian variant of antisemitic discourse was the rapidity of its adoption in the parliamentary debates. The more or less troubled history of Romania had also an impact on the history of Romanian Jewry. Orthodox Christian Romanians along with Jews have been the witnesses of major historical changes starting with second half of the 19th century.1 This period is characterized by the creation of the national state, enabled due to the Paris Convention of 1858 after the Crimean War, and the invention of Romanian nationalism.2 Its basic concepts (homeland, people, nation) have a “pre-history” with ancient roots in the collective mentality, but they were
