  • The Discourse on Humour in the Romanian Press Between 1948-1965
SLOVO, VOL. 31, NO. 2 (SUMMER 2018), 17-47 DOI: 10.14324/111.0954-6839.081 The Discourse on Humour in the Romanian Press between 1948-1965 EUGEN CONSTANTIN IGNAT University of Bucharest INTRODUCTION Once the official proclamation of the Romanian People’s Republic takes place, on the 30th of December 1947, the process of imposing new cultural values on society gradually permeates all areas of Romanian social life. Humour also becomes part of this process of transforming the social and cultural life, often regarded as a powerful weapon with which to attack ‘old’ bourgeois mentalities. According to Hans Speier, the official type of humour promoted by an authoritarian regime is political humour, which contributes to maintain the existent social order, or plays its part in changing it – all depending on those holding the reins over mass- media.1 Taking the Soviet Union as a model, the Romanian new regime imposes an official kind of humour, created through mass-media: the press, the radio, literature, cinematography, and television. This paper analyses the Romanian discourse on humour, reflected in the press, between 1948-1965,2 in cultural magazines3 such as Contemporanul (1948-1965), Probleme de 1 Hans Speier, ‘Wit and politics. An essay on laughter and power,’ American Journal of Sociology, 103 (1998), p.1353. 2 This period represents the first phase in the history of the communist regime in Romania. After a transitional period (1944-1947), the year 1948 marks the establishment of the communist regime in Romania. Through a series of political, economic, social, and cultural measures, such as the adoption of a new Constitution, banning of opposition parties, nationalization of the means of production, radical transformation of the education system or ‘Sovietisation’ of culture, the new regime radically transforms Romanian society.

  • ROMANIAN IDENTITY and CULTURAL POLITICS UNDER CEAU§ESCU: an EXAMPLE from PHILOSOPHY1 Katherine Verdery
ROMANIAN IDENTITY AND CULTURAL POLITICS UNDER CEAU§ESCU: AN EXAMPLE FROM PHILOSOPHY1 Katherine Verdery Studies of intellectuals, their relation to power, and their role in shaping social ideologies' occupy an important place in twentieth-century social science (e.g., Mannheim 1955, Gramsci 1971, Shils 1958, Gouldner 1979, Foucault 1978 and 1980, Bourdieu 1975 and 1988, Konri.\d and Szelenyi 1979, Bauman 1987). While earlier writings (such as Shils 1958 and Coser 1965) treatec;i intellectual activity as "free-floating" and as relatively independent of political interest, the consensus of the 1970s and 1980s emphasizes, rather, that intellectual production is situated, embedded in political and social relations. Different theorists have different views concerning the political character of scientific findings and scholarly debates. Some emphasize the ways in which knowledge develops practices that contribute to subjection (e.g., Bauman 1987, Foucault 1978); others focus on the politics that occur within afield of intellectual activity and on how that field is tied to political and eco~omic processes in. the society as a whole (e.g., .Abbott 1988, Bourdieu 1975, 1988). Still others examine how the discourses of "intellectuals build up ideological premises that either construct or challenge social hegemonies (e.g., Simmonds-Duke 1987). This essay, and the study of which it forms a part (Verdery 1991), follow the third of these routes. My objective is to investigate how intellectual activity in Romania under ceau~escu contributed to reproducing

  • Haiku in Romania by Vasile Moldovan
Haiku in Romania by Vasile Moldovan Romanian poets expressed their interest in Japanese culture as early as at the very beginning of the 20th century. Two classics of Romanian literature, Alexandru Macedonski and Vasile Alecsandri, were fascinated by the beauty of Japanese landscape poems, and wrote several poems inspired by classical Japanese literature. First Romanian essays on haiku and tanka appeared in the Iasi-based Literary Event magazine in 1904. In the same year, the poet Al Vlahuta published an essay titled “The Japanese Poetry and Painting” in the By the Fireside magazine; this essay contained a number of tanka and haiku poems. Poet Al. T. Stamatiad published the first haiku poems in Romanian language, 12 in total, in the anthology titled Tender Landscape, which won the Romanian Academy Prize. In the 1930s, the poet Ion Pillat experimented with one-line poems, many of which resembled haiku. His best miniatures appeared in his collection that he called- One-line Poems (1935). These poems usually had a caesura and comprised of thirteen to fourteen syllables. In the preface he claimed that even if his poems differ from mainstream haiku they should be regarded as a form of haikai poetry. Pillat’s book proved to be influential, and nowadays many Romanian poets follow this trend. At approximately the same time poet Traian Chelariu published Nippon soul, an anthology of classical Japanese poetry in his translations (incidentally, he translated it through German). Chelariu adhered to the 5-7-5 pattern, which afterwards influenced many Romanian authors of haiku. In 1942, Al. T. Stamatiad published Nippon Courtesan Songs.

  • New Images of the Nation in Postcommunist Romanian Literature
ANDREEA MIRONESCU THE INTERRUPTED COMMUNITY: NEW IMAGES OF THE NATION IN POSTCOMMUNIST ROMANIAN LITERATURE What Can One See through a Hole in a Flag The 1989 Romanian Revolution brought to the forefront one of the most powerful and suggestive images of the interrupted community: the hole in the flag. Cutting out the national emblem of the former Socialist Republic of Romania could have been a purely contextual and defiant action during the insurrection against Ceausescu’s oppressive regime, but it had immediate and large echoes. Andrei Codrescu, a reputed Romanian-American writer who travelled back to Romania in December 1989 to relate the revolution as a radio commentator for ABC’s Nightline, was one of the first to speculate upon this image in his homonymous book published in 1991: “suddenly there, under the cold moon, there it was, the Romanian flag with the socialist emblem cut right out of the middle. […] It’s through that hole, I thought, that I am returning to my birthplace”1. Codrescu connects the hole in the flag not only with a maternal tunnel through which he returns in his homeland, but also to the motif of the empty space which featured recurrently in Romanian theories of national culture ever since the interwar period, as Bogdan Ştefănescu suggests2. However, a more transparent connection to the interrupted community, as Jean-Luc Nancy defines it in his celebrated book The Inoperative Community, is to be found in Slavoj Žižek’s interpretation of the hole in the flag. For the Slovenian philosopher, the Romanian hollowed flag is a “sublime image” of a suspended and open historical situation: “the rebels waving the national flag with the red star, the Communist symbol, cut out, so that instead of the symbol standing for the organizing principle of the national life, there was nothing but a hole in its centre”3.
