Preparing for munitions production for total war, finding out wha t weapons to make, and their perfection into prototypes for mass produc- tion, takes in time upwards of two decades . After this preparation period, a mass production on a nation-wide scale is at least a four-years' task in which "the first year yields nothing ; the second very little ; the third a lot and the fourth a flood" .' When Japan struck in December 1941, Britai n and the British Commonwealth had been at war for more than two years . During that time they had to a large extent changed over to a war economy and increasingly brought reserve strength into play . Indeed, in 1940, 1941 and 1942, British production of aircraft, tanks, trucks, self-propelled gun s and other materials of war, exceeded Germany 's. This was partly due to Britain's wartime economic mobilisation, and partly to the fact that Ger- many had not planned for a long war. Having achieved easy victories b y overwhelming unmobilised enemies with well-organised forces and accumu- lated stocks of munitions and materials, the Germans allowed over- confidence to prevent them from broadening the base of their econom y to match the mounting economic mobilisation of Britain . -

From the President Welcome to the March 2020 edition of Call the Hands. We hope you find the mix of contemporary and historic Australian naval stories of interest and provide feedback which is always appreciated. Accompanying this edition are two quite different occasional papers. The first (OP 73) on ships badges and mottos, like many of our stories, arose out of a research query on the correct spelling of a ships name. HMA Ships Shepparton and Ballarat being the focus of attention. The former has been spelt with both either one or two P’s and the latter with three or four A’s at different times. In the case of HMAS Ballarat, the ships motto and its link to the Eureka Flag (1854) are also examined. Occasional Paper 74 focuses on shipping (naval and support) in and around the Port of Darwin on 19 February 1942. It provides details of the damage and losses incurred by these vessels and provides an overview of other World War 2 heritage sites in the vicinity of Darwin. Now in the 75th year since the end of War in the Pacific we are reminded that the ranks of our World War 2 veterans are diminishing. Sadly, Vice Admiral David Leach, AC, CBE, LVO who joined the Navy in January 1942 is one of them. The Society acknowledges his service of 43 years and leadership of the RAN for three of those years. The publication of this issue coincides with the 78th anniversary of the loss of HMAS Yarra (2) on 4 March 1942. -

CHAPTER 1 6 DEFEAT IN ABDA RILE the Japanese surface forces stealing up the Musi River wer e W being continuously attacked by Allied air forces on the 15th Feb- ruary, Doorman's striking force was the target for repeated fierce attack s by Japanese aircraft to the east of Banka Island . The force weighed and left Oosthaven at 4 p .m. on the 14th, and formed in two columns . The Dutch cruisers, led by De Ruyter, were to starboard ; and the British, led by Hobart as Senior Officer, to port . The six U.S. destroyers screened ahead ; and three Dutch astern. One of the four Dutch ships had bee n sent on ahead to mark Two Brothers Island off the south-east coast o f Sumatra, and join later. Air reconnaissance on the 13th had indicated four groups of enemy vessels : two cruisers, two destroyers, and two transports about sixty miles south of the Anambas Islands, steering south-west a t 10 a.m. ; one cruiser, three destroyers and eight transports some twenty miles to the eastward of the first group, and steering south at 10.30 a.m. ; three cruisers, five destroyers and one transport, about sixty miles nort h of Banka Island and steering west at 3 .30 p.m.; and two destroyers with fourteen transports about 100 miles north of Billiton island, and steerin g S.S.W., at 4.30 p.m. Doorman led his force northwards in accordance with the decision s reached by him and Helfrich—to go northwards through Gaspar Strait, round Banka, and back through Banka Strait, "destroying any enemy force s seen". -

CHAPTER 1 1 MEDITERRANEAN TO END OF 194 1 RITING after the war of the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean W consequent on the loss of Crete, Admiral Cunningham said : The immediate repercussions were threefold. The supply and hence the safety of Malta were jeopardized ; attacks on the Libyan convoys were made very hazardous; and the route through the Mediterranean was virtually closed . The answer seemed clear. We had lost the northern flank and were unlikely to regain it . Therefore we must try and get the southern flank. If the army could reach, say, Derna, a good deal would have been done to ease the situation.) The British key points on this southern flank were Malta and Tobruk , each of which contributed to the enemy's difficulties in maintaining his communications in North Africa, while the nourishment of each impose d heavy burdens on the Mediterranean Fleet . Events were to show that British success or otherwise in dealing with the Axis sea supply line to North Africa varied in almost direct propor- tion to the naval and air strength that could be based on Malta . As was told in Chapter 7 it was possible to base surface forces there for a few weeks during April and May 1941 ; but these were withdrawn in Ma y to reinforce the fleet in the struggle for Crete, and thereafter surfac e forces were not again based on Malta until October 1941 . Attacks o n enemy convoys had to be left to submarines and aircraft, and for a time Malta had to rely for supplies, including petrol, on two minelaying sub - marines. -

From the President Welcome to Edition 41 of Call the Hands and accompanying occasional papers. It is apt that the theme of this edition is ‘HMAS Brisbane’ given that pennant number 41 was allocated to both HMAS Ships Brisbane (II) and (III). Captain Ralph Derbidge MBE RAN (Retired) has assisted greatly by providing two occasional papers on HMAS Brisbane. The papers have quite different themes and portray very different aspects of Brisbane (III) in particular. As space did not allow any significant coverage of Brisbane (I) readers with an interest in aviation may appreciate the story of HMAS Brisbane (I) and the Sopwith Baby, published by the Fleet Air Arm Association of Australia. Interesting links are also provided in this edition to papers published by the Sea Power Centre-Australia on the conventions of naming ships, assigning designations and pennant number, a subject which can cause considerable confusion. As always, I am grateful to members and subscribers who provide feedback and additional material on our stories. Our special thanks this month to Hugh Stevenson, Gerry Shepherd John M Wilkins. Research into HMAT Ballarat led to Occasional Paper 79 which is a first hand account of the loss of Ballarat in the English Channel during World War II. The Society is pleased to acknowledge the commissioning of NUSHIP Sydney (V) into the Fleet on 2 May 2020. Unfortunately, the ceremony will be a low key, practical event for ship’s company only without official guests and family members. The ceremony will simply mark the occasion the ship is commissioned into service. -

Brief history of the Royal Australian Navy during World War I When the Australian Government declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Fleet comprised of one battle-cruiser, six light cruisers, six destroyers, two submarines and numerous support and ancillary craft. The total number of personnel serving in the Permanent Naval Forces was 3,800 (all ranks). The Reserves provided a further 76 officers and 2,380 sailors for home service, and 51 officers and 1,775 sailors for service overseas. The ships and men of the RAN operated as an integral part of the Royal Navy and served in all naval operational areas in World War I. The Royal Australian Navy's first task was to protect Australia's ports, shipping and trade routes. The first wartime operation for the RAN took place on the night of 11th August 1914, when the three black-painted destroyers HMAS Warrego, HMAS Yarra and HMAS Parramatta swept into Simpson Harbour in German New Guinea with orders to torpedo any German warships they discovered. The harbour was found to be empty. On 12th August 1914, HMAS Encounter (old light cruiser) intercepted and captured the steamer Zambezi, an ex-British vessel under German control in New Guinea waters and was the RAN's first wartime prize The light cruiser HMAS Encounter capturing Zambezi in August 1914. CHAPTER 1 0 THE MIDDLE EAS T HE campaigns in Greece and Crete, and their outcome, made a con- T siderable impression in Australia, the effects of which were felt widel y elsewhere. Since Australian and New Zealand troops were engaged on a proportionately large scale, and casualty lists were long, it was natural that events in the Eastern Mediterranean during April and May 1941 should be viewed out of their perspective by a contemporary observer in Australia. This was sensed by the Australians fighting overseas who, forti- fied by their confidence in each other and by their measure of the enem y they fought, saw the situation more truly). In Australia, newspaper criticism of the strategy and of the conduct of the war in the Eastern Mediterranean, coupled with political discussions whether the Advisory War Council should have been consulted on the participation of Australian troops in Greece, received wide publicity whic h was cabled overseas and (helped by enemy propaganda) gave rise abroa d to misconceptions as to Australia's attitude towards the war . The Aus- tralian Ministers in the United States (Mr Casey) and Japan (Sir Joh n Latham) both protested to the Government regarding the effect this wa s having in those countries. 2 On receipt of these protests, and as the result of a request from Mr Fadden3 (Acting Prime Minister in the absenc e r After the evacuation of Greece, a rating in Stuart wrote to his parents : " . From the President Welcome to the August 2020 edition of Call the Hands. The theme of this edition is the War in the Pacific which concluded on VP Day 75 years ago. We hope you find it of interest and provide feedback which is always appreciated. The significance of the 75th anniversary of the end of the War in the Pacific is of great importance to the Committee and Volunteers of the NHSA in that our Society was founded by veterans. Many had served in WW2 and later wrote numerous books published by the Society from firsthand accounts and diaries kept by their colleagues. In this our 50th year we are proud to still have amongst our membership a small number of WW2 veterans some of whom have served on the Committee or as volunteers. Accompanying this edition are three occasional papers (OPs). The first, OP 86 summarises the activities of the Royal Australian Navy in the Pacific War. OP 87 focuses on the disposition and employment of RAN ships deployed north of Australia in August and September 1945. Following the end of hostilities, these ships were tasked with; ferrying participants to or conducting surrender ceremonies, internee and POW repatriation, transporting troops and stores, landing occupation forces and mine sweeping operations. The publication of this issue also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the deployment of HMA Ships Adelaide, Darwin and Success to the Middle East 3 days after the Cabinet decision to commit Australian forces to the United Nations multinational force. OP 88 describes the lesser known logistics support aspects (pre deployment and in theatre) for Operation Damask the Australian code name for the operation.
