Ochrona Beskidów Zachodnich 2: 51–101, 2008 Biegaczowate (Coleoptera, Carabidae) Gorców Th e ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) of the Gorce Mts Tadeusz Wojas Abstract: Th e ground beetle fauna (Coleoptera, Carabidae) of the Gorce Mts (Western Carpathians) has been so far very poorly studied: there had been recorded about 45 species, while this study resulted in 215 species what gives in total 219 species including those not found in these investigations (nearly 44 % of Polish fauna). Th e carabids occurred in communities (groupings) in 15 habitats distinguished in the studied area. Th e zoogeographical analysis was done with special regard to montane species. Acta Biologica Sibirica 7: 125–141. https://doi. org/10.3897/abs.7.e67015 Abstract Bulgarian ground beetle (Coleoptera, Carabidae) fauna is relatively well studied but there are still many species and regions in the country which are not well researched. The present study aims at complementing the data about the distribution of the carabids from the tribes Pterostichini, Spho- drini, and Platynini, containing many diverse, interesting, and endemic species. It gives new records for 67 species and 23 zoogeographical regions in Bulgaria. The material was collected in the period from 1926 to 2021 through different sampling methods. Twenty-three species are recorded for the first time in different regions. Six species are reported for the second time in the regions where they were currently collected. Thirty-one species have not been reported for more than 20 years in Eastern and Middle Stara Planina Mts., Kraishte region, Boboshevo-Simitli valley, Sandanski-Petrich valley, Lyulin Mts., Vitosha Mts., Rila Mts., Pirin Mts., Slavyanka Mts., Thracian Lowland, and Sakar-Tundzha re- gion. -

Ekológia (Bratislava), Vol. 35, No. 4, p. 340–349, 2016. Communities of epigeic beetles were studied using pitfall trapping on 10 plots with the different stage of decline and clear-cut plots without coarse woody debris. Species richness (number of all species, S), total species diversity as the Shannon–Wiener’s index (H) and equitability (e) were calcu- lated in the DBreleve. The Ward’s method of hierarchical agglomerative classification with Euclidean distance was used for the differentiation of the communities on the plots. Species data for this analyse were represented by logarithm-transformed activities [log(x+1)]. The single-factor analysis of vari- ance (ANOVA) was used for statistical testing of differences in structural parameters (e.g. species richness and diversity) amongst distinguished groups of the plots. The species diversity and activity differs on glades without trees and coarse woody debris. -

This study represents a critical revision of the available literature, museum collections and a three years field study of the carabid beetles of the Bulgarian and Turkish parts of Strandzha Mountain and the adjacent Black Sea Coast territories. New information A total of 328 species and subspecies of Carabidae, belonging to 327 species from the region of Strandzha Mountain and adjacent seacoast area, have been listed. Of these, 77 taxa represent new records for the Bulgarian part of the region, and 110 taxa new records for Turkish part of the studied region. © Kostova R, Guéorguiev B. ©Gesellschaft für Angewandte Carabidologie e.V. download www.laufkaefer.de Verantwortlichkeit für den Schutz und Raumbedeut- samkeit von Laufkäfern in Deutschland: Taxa welcher Lebensräume Deutschlands sind betroffen?1 Horst Gruttke 1 Gewidmet Prof. Dr. Gerd Müller-Motzfeld Abstract: Responsibility for Conservation and Space Importance of ground beetles in Germany: Taxa of which Habitats are concerned? – Concepts of responsibility and space importance have been combined by Müller-Motzfeld , Trautner and Bräunicke in 2004. Both concepts are linked to the tasks deri- ving from the Rio Convention on Biological Diversity. Responsibility of Germany for the conservation of organisms consist of 2 main categories (“especially high responsible”: “!!” and “highly responsible”: “!”) and 1 category for highly isolated outposts “(!)”. Space importance comprises 3 categories: endemic in Germany (E), central European distribution (rz) and wider European distribution (re). A Swiss approach to derive reasonable threshold levels of areal proportion adequate for assigning national responsibility from a so called “expectation value” for a country and some modifications including propor- tions of “suitable habitat” as reference are discussed. In Germany temperate woodland and flood-plains or estuaries had been originally dominating, comprising together about 10 % of these habitat types in Europe. Among taxa with high conservation responsibility, species of woodlands and humid habitats are dominating as well, but species of meadows and xero-thermic or mountain habitats are listed, too. The distribution of carabid taxa with high space importance is similar but with some significant differences. It comprises more alpine and mountain species, particularly those from block and rubble-slopes. Arguments for a revision of existing lists are presented, Carabus auronitens being an exemplary candidate for integration into the list of taxa for which Germany bears a high conservation responsibility. -

In many countries, they are well established for environmental impact assessment, but even in the well-studied Central European fauna, species identification can be very difficult. A comprehensive and taxonomically well-curated DNA barcode library could remedy this deficit and could also link hundreds of years of traditional knowledge with next generation sequencing technology. However, such a beetle library is missing to date. This study provides the globally largest DNA barcode reference library for Coleoptera for 15 948 individuals belonging to 3514 well-identified species (53% of the German fauna) with representatives from 97 of 103 families (94%). This study is the first comprehensive regional test of the efficiency of DNA barcoding for beetles with a focus on Germany. Sequences ≥500 bp were recovered from 63% of the specimens analysed (15 948 of 25 294) with short sequences from another 997 specimens. -

Communities of epigeic beetles in the montane spruce forests of different decline stages in the Modrava area (Bohemian Forest) Jaroslav Boháč 1), Karel Matějka 2) 1) Alšova 837, 373 41 Hluboká nad Vltavou, Czech Republic 2) IDS, Na Komořsku 2175/2a, 143 00 Praha 4, Czech Republic Introduction The most important challenge of the European forestry is a sustainable farming with both the feasible wood production and encouragement of non-production functions of forest including biodiversity (LINDENMAYER ET AL. 2000). The majority of virginal forests in submontane and montane areas of the central Europe was cutted down and changed on the spruce monocultures (RÖHLE 1991; PRETZCH 1996; VACEK ET AL. 2009). These even- aged stands have the high productivity but they are very sensitive to weather conditions (especially wind storms) and insects outbreaks (ROTHE ET BORCHERT 2003). In forests, competition between humans and saproxylic beetles has a long history (GROVE 2002). The European spruce bark beetle Ips typographus is considered to be the most serious pest species of mature spruce stands, mainly of Norway spruce (Picea abies), throughout Eurasia (GRODZKI ET AL. 2004; WERMELINGER 2004). Among all types of forest damage from 1950 to 2000 in Europe, 2–9 million m3 of timber per year were destroyed by bark beetles, mainly I. typographus (SCHELHAAS ET AL. 2003). The preference of this species for mature spruce trees increases the economic impact of its damage. With regard to these facts, it is not surprising that most published research on bark beetles deals with damage and prevention of outbreaks in commercial forests (ERIKSSON ET AL. -

A total of 27 species of ground beetles (Carabidae) were collected using pitfall traps with vinegar. Important is finding of Carabus irregularis and Pterostichus selmanni roubali which are considered to be relict species of old-growth forests. Saproxylic beetles were collected using flight interception traps with salt solution. A total of 112 species belonging to 30 families were collected. 11 of these species are reported in the Czech Red list of endangered species. Cryptophagus corticinus is considered new in the Czech Republic, Cryptophagus falcozi is new in Bohemia, and Xylosandrus germanus is new in the Šumava Mountains. Critically endangered stag beetle Ceruchus chrysomelinus and very rare click beetle Ampedus karpathicus were found by additional hand collecting. These findings reveal conservation value of the studied site which host rich communities of saproxylic and epigeic species. Some of the species are known as old-growth forest indicators.
