Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each. -

B Manawatu Car Club Inc MAGAZINE APRIL 2018 Something for Everyone Page 1 of 58 EDITORSPEAK… So my thought for this month is please don’t be a dick. When you are on the road, be patient, we are I’ve lately been reading a “new to me” book titled usually all in a hurry however take the time to be “How to Drive a Car – the Nicities of Control” courteous to others, smile at people (you’d be written by the team at The Motor magazine in the surprised how much that unsettles them!!), and UK, sometime in the mid 1920’s. It’s pretty generally just do the right thing. Especially if you are enlightening. For instance you got a licence by sporting a Manawatu Car Club sticker in the back paying 5 shillings to the local or county council. You window. could then sally forth onto the roads - it was up to you to learn how to drive!! I guess that was the While on the subject let me tell you a little story. same here in the same period. The book deals in all We live at the end of a nicely twisty 35 kms of aspects of driving, from the actual mechanics of tarmac that threads its way up from Waiuku to the controlling a (now vintage) car (hand throttle, tip of the peninsula. It’s a real mix of a road, some advance/retard lever, central accelerator pedal, bits are wide and nice and flowing, others less so as outside handbrake etc…) to dealing with other the road follows the course of the original gravel. -

Editorial. a Couple of Big News Items This Month. Firstly, and Following On
July 2018 Number 2 66 www.northkentlotusgroup.org Editorial . A couple of big news items this month. Firstly, and following on from the item in last month’s newsletter, the decision has been made to relocate the club nights. As from the next meeting, Wednesday 12 th September, we shall be meeting at The Moody Mare. See the panel below for more details. The proposal did, eventually, generate some discussion, and whilst it’s impossible to keep all the people happy all the time the consensus was that relocation to The Moody Mare would be a good move. Turn-out for the last two or three club nights has been excellent, helped by the good weather of course, and we’ve run up double figures on each occasion. I acknowledge that we are in the holiday season and some people will be away, but can I urge all of you who can to make a special effort to get to the first meeting at The Moody Mare on the 12 th ? I shall be speaking to the pub to see if they can provide some ‘nibbles’ as a welcome pack, and whilst I’m aware that many Member s saw the facilities there when they attended the barbeque, it would be good for as many as possible were able to attend and provide some feedback. Second notable item is that there is to be a run to Hethel on Saturday 29 th September to celebrate Lotus’s th 70 anniversary. A note has been circulated to this effect that I hope you’ve all seen. -
