Mcc Committee Members B Manawatu Car Club Inc MAGAZINE APRIL 2018 Something for Everyone Page 1 of 58 EDITORSPEAK… So my thought for this month is please don’t be a dick. When you are on the road, be patient, we are I’ve lately been reading a “new to me” book titled usually all in a hurry however take the time to be “How to Drive a Car – the Nicities of Control” courteous to others, smile at people (you’d be written by the team at The Motor magazine in the surprised how much that unsettles them!!), and UK, sometime in the mid 1920’s. It’s pretty generally just do the right thing. Especially if you are enlightening. For instance you got a licence by sporting a Manawatu Car Club sticker in the back paying 5 shillings to the local or county council. You window. could then sally forth onto the roads - it was up to you to learn how to drive!! I guess that was the While on the subject let me tell you a little story. same here in the same period. The book deals in all We live at the end of a nicely twisty 35 kms of aspects of driving, from the actual mechanics of tarmac that threads its way up from Waiuku to the controlling a (now vintage) car (hand throttle, tip of the peninsula. It’s a real mix of a road, some advance/retard lever, central accelerator pedal, bits are wide and nice and flowing, others less so as outside handbrake etc…) to dealing with other the road follows the course of the original gravel. traffic, including trams, and policemen on points Having said that, it is entirely possible on a decent duty – does anyone else still remember them or am day to travel most of the way at 100kph without I showing my age?? What struck me most unduly distressing passengers or endangering other throughout the book was the constant call for road users (in fact its probably easy enough to travel vigilance and consideration of all other road users. much quicker, though I couldn’t possibly confirm This is something that could be taken onboard by that because we all know you can only do that on many of todays steerers (I won’t call them drivers the circuit or a private road, don’t we!!). There are simply because many are emphatically not). I know some stunning views, both over the harbour and most Jaffa’s complain of the traffic, but in many out to the ocean, and I enjoy it every time I use it. cases the problems are brought about by ignorant, Sadly the road is also notorious for accidents, many self-entitled and discourteous knobs of both serious, which happen with frightening regularity. I genders. As an example, merging from 2 lanes to simply can’t understand why so many people get it one inevitably brings traffic to a standstill because wrong. It’s not a hard road to drive, and the worst invariably the traffic in the lane that’s disappearing corners are very well marked. The latest was a head will wait until the last minute to merge, because on where a woman and her very young son were they don’t want to risk losing a few car lengths, sent to hospital by helicopter – not nice, and the resulting in cars having to stop (or almost stop) to result of one vehicle crossing the centre line. Is it let them in. Bloody annoying for those that lack of basic car control, inattention, not driving to anticipate the lane closure and actually merge the conditions / your ability, lack of anticipation, earlier while traffic is still moving. driving under the influence of whatever, or ….. ?? Or are we, with our increasing health and safety mollycoddling breeding stupid?? I wish I knew as, being selfish, I really don’t like the idea of sharing the road with these people. We all moan about the tourists, however I think we need to look a hell of a lot closer to home. Many of the accidents involve locals, which is a sad indictment. Do we need a different approach to the current licence system?? We certainly need more ProDrive / Holden Street Smart type programmes where hands on driver coaching is given to augment the theory, given the issues above. Ultimately, in my opinion, it comes down to the individual taking responsibility for their actions and Page 2 of 58 sadly too few do, forgetting that their errors may Palmy, so don’t restrict yourselves. No doubt many of you have closely followed the Australian GP, both for Brendon’s first race of the season and the Kiwi Supercars contingent. There were quite a number of MCC members waving the flag at the circuit. For Brendon it was a solid performance despite pitting early for new tyres after a brake lock-up, and later suffering a puncture and car damage, and I bet beating his team mate throughout the weekend will be morale boosting personally. On a circuit that’s notorious for having very few passing opportunities, despite adding an extra DRS zone, he did well to hang on to more experienced drivers. The Trump administration have just announced a mandatory recall of all 4,125,801 Toyota XV10 and XV20 series Camry’s sold in the United States between 1991 and 2001. While the authorities have confirmed they are aware many of these vehicles will have been lost due to natural attrition over the years, a significant number of owners are likely to be affected, many in the lower socio-economic groups of the population. Spokesperson for the US Department of Transportation, April Phoule advised that current owners on their database would be contacted within the month. Officially no reason has yet been given for the recall, however it is widely believed that the State Department have been pushing for some time to have owners declared unpatriotic citizens for their appalling taste in bland cars. The streets of Adelaide await.. GB Galvanizing M Motorsport Preview Rnd#2 Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli (Clipsal, Adelaide SA) 26 February, 2013 After an outstanding debut to his 2013 national GT campaign, dual Victorian Sportscar State Champion Justin McMillan heads to round two of the Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli, on the daunting streets of Adelaide, but as he showed during round one at Bathurst, he’s not daunted by the big stage.. “There’s no denying that there was some level of trepidation heading to Bathurst for the first time, but we went with an experienced crew, with two experienced drivers, and the goal of completing laps,” McMillan admitted. “In the end we achieved what we set out to achieve, and came out of Bathurst placed fifth in the championship heading to Adelaide, but where I had Richo [Steven Richards] and Ross [Lilley] to pace myself against there, I’m on my own in Adelaide, and I can’t wait..!” From opening practice at Mount Panorama the GB Galvanizing Gallardo LP600 was quick, and for experienced Bathurst veteran Steven Richards, he was impressed by McMillan’s pace, but also his eagerness to listen and learn. “Justin drove brilliantly all weekend,” the new AGT DSO [driving standards observer] agreed. “He paced himself early and got quicker and quicker as the weekend wore on. Had we not suffered the gearbox issue, we could well have been inside the top five, so to debut that way, and come away from an event that was as difficult to negotiate as any I’ve ever contested with a straight car, was an almost perfect result.” Justin’s debut on the streets of Adelaide won’t be the M Motorsport teams only debut for the weekend, with new partners Interlloy Engineering Steels and Alloys and FUCHS Lubricants joining existing supporters GB Galvanizing, Strategy One Human Resources and Australian Post Tensioning for the first time at Clipsal.

Farming can be so frustrating at times, however it can also be so much fun writing about the frustrations!! THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF DUNLOP MOTORSPORT IN TOUCH [ www.injection.tv ] ISSUE TEN, NOVEMBER 2008 Simoncelli, di Meglio and Dunlop celebrate in style! Marco Simoncelli and Alvaro Bautista have been the most consistent finishers in the MotoGP 250cc category, each scoring in 13 of the 15 races this year and are first and second in the riders' standings with one race remaining, in Valencia at the end of October. With his third place finish in Malaysia mid-October, seconds behind Bautista at the chequered flag, it was Simoncelli who was crowned the 2008 250cc champion and the Italian celebrated by completing a helmet-less victory lap around the track. Simoncelli has scored five wins to Bautista's four so far this year, but the Italian has consistently finished on the podium. Mid-season he was on devastating form, finishing second to Mika Kallio in France, and then winning the Spanish and German Grands Prix, finishing second in Britain, and third at the Dutch Grand Prix. Bautista had fallen far behind by the time the bikes lined up in Spain, having scored one win, but just 16 more points in the Mike di Meglio wins the Australian 125cc race and Dunlop's 12th straight category title opening six races. The Spaniard worked hard during the second half of the year, starting on his home ground where he was second to Simoncelli, and that led Dunlop celebrates another successful to a run of six straight podium finishes, culminating in victory in South Africa. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.
