They were only ever on sale at the circuit, and were sold to raise funds for things going on in Silverstone Village. Being sold on the circuit gave them access to some very hard to find signatures, as you can see from this initial selection. The Domingo’s – Racing around Prejudice Greg Mills POSITIONED ATOP THE KILLARNEY CLUBHOUSE IN THE EARLY 1970s, I remember clearly the comment of one smirking safari-suited individual as Des Ally blasted his ex-works Chev ‘CanAm’ into the lead down the back-straight. In those days, before enclosed bars and eating areas, we used to run across the second-floor of the Clubhouse every lap to watch the cars shoot under the bridge and brake for Hoal’s Hoek (sadly renamed in the 1980s after some transient sponsor) and then we would dash over to the other side to view them up the short-straight into the Malmesbury Sweep before they headed off at a rate of knots down to the banked BP corner. ‘See what happens when you give a black man power?’ Mr Safari exclaimed, at least half, I prefer to believe, in jest about the coloured driver’s obvious speed. Ally was among the pioneers of removing prejudice from the sport if not from individuals. But the honour of being the first to do so should go to the Domingo family. They were the first F1 drivers ‘of colour’, to invoke modern parlance, way before Lewis Hamilton or even the US star Willy T Ribbs. Family patriarch Solly Domingo had been a car enthusiast since the 1930s, participating in races in the 1950s at Grand Central, according to eldest son Joe. Joe, interviewed in 2008 when 68, is one of four Domingo brothers who took up the sport in the 1960s and 1970s – along with twins Mike and Alan, born in 1946, and youngest son Yunus. -

This division of amateur and professional prevented him from racing until 1955 when he entered and won his first race at the old Killarney in an 1172cc side-valve Ford Spyder, beating the South African champion Bill Jennings in a handicap event. He raced a variety of cars after that and secured the Western Province Championship on two separate occasions. When his racing career ended, Adrian again became involved in the administration of the WPMC and this involvement as an administrator continues to today. -

THE F1 EXHIBITION’S IN THE RICHARD MILLE’S SPACE The Formula 1 is the queen of motorsports with its numerous racing stables as famous as the others. However, this discipline still has a few hidden details within its history! The Richard Mille’s space (Hall 1, P052), with a dedicated exhibition, will introduce amateurs and specialists the four-wheel and six wheels single-seaters vehicles that have transformed the F1’S world. Visitors will have the opportunity to admire six racing beasts at the Retromobile tradeshow! CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY The history of Formula One is inextricably intertwined with the investigation of new technologies. Since the dawn of this – the highest class – of motorsports, engineers have spent their time looking for new technical solutions so that whichever constructor they represent can steal a march over its rivals and dominate the discipline. These wins which are supposed to push motor performance through the roof can sometimes take an unexpected turn. One example involves British engineer and inventor Harry Ferguson, noted for his role in the development of the modern tractor. In 1960, he asked Tony Rolt – the director his research firm – to design and build a four-wheel drive F1 car. Cosworth F1 4WD The single-seater P99, designed around a tubular spaceframe and featuring a front-mounted Climax engine, was first raced in the 1961 British Empire Trophy. The designated pilot, Jack Fairman, was aided by Stirling Moss, but Moss was disqualified for outside assistance. Moss used the rain to his advantage to drive the car to victory at Oulton Park in a non-championship event. -

1975 Williams FW04 chassis 02 Debuted at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, the FW04 was the second ever model created by the fledgling Frank Williams Racing Cars Team. For 1975, the team would use a combination of Arturo Merzario, Jacques Lafitte, Ian Scheckter and Lella Lombardi for driving duties. A very limited budget (even resorting to buying second hand tyres at some Grand Prix) didn’t hold the plucky team back though - the talented Lafitte even managing to bring the first FW04 home in second place at the 1975 German Grand Prix, earning the team a very valuable six championship points. Whilst reliability often eluded the FW04, the car showed real flashes of pace, and hinted at the great things to come from the team. In late ’75, this car (chassis 02) was constructed by the team and entered into the US Grand Prix for the lighting quick lady-driver Lella Lombardi. Reliability issues sadly curtailed her weekend, and the car wouldn’t run in another Grand Prix. With Canadian oil baron Walter Wolf buying up 60% of Frank Williams Racing Cars for 1976, FW04 chassis 01 had one more race with Renzo Zorzi, who even outqualified team-mate Jacky Ickx in the new FW05 at the opening round in Brazil. Both FW04s were then retired by the team, who had since moved onto the FW05. Chassis 02 is newly rebuilt by Hall & Hall, and comes equipped with a fresh Richardson DFV. Ready to race in Masters F1, and a great entry for Monaco 2018 (this is the only race-ready FW04 in existence), the car represents a perfect entry for those looking to be competitive in a car wearing one of the most iconic names in Grand Prix history. -

Basil Van Rooyen's Motor Racing Career Stretched from the Late 1950S
Aleš Norský: Basil van Rooyen’s motor racing career stretched from the late 1950s until 1980, and reached from motorcycles to touring and sports cars, all the way to Formula 1, where he started in two World Championship events, and was multiple race winner in the South African Championship. He has won a number of other races and three Championships. Along the way, van Rooyen had also displayed remarkable engineering abilities, which led him to form the renowned car performance and accessory company, Superformance. After his retirement from racing, van Rooyen has managed several large companies, and this work eventually resulted in relocating his family from South Africa to Australia, where he still lives today. For the past dozen years (or so) Basil channels his energies to innovation and creative engineering. We had this following e-mail discussion in January 2017. A.N. You started to race motorcycles and then switched to saloon cars, but was it always your ambition to race, or did it just happen, somehow? B.vR. My folks never saw a motor race...nor did I...but I wanted a motorcycle to impress the girls that my hormones had discovered, and to get around at 17. By 18 I upgraded to a Puch 250 from my James 200, and heard about a race coming up...and entered my road machine. This led to my being chosen to ride one of three works Puch’s from Austria, in the upcoming 24-hour race near Johannesburg, and my realisation that I could ride. I rode the winning bike, but fell ill with kidney bruising from lying flat on my stomach with legs outstretched to slip-stream larger machines, and having no kidney belt.
