National Formula 1 Championships The South African National Championship started in 1953 and the races were mostly handicap events for several categories, but by 1960 only formula-type cars were entered, although the Championship was still run as Formula Libre. In 1961 the rules were changed to make only the cars conforming to the new 1.50 liter FIA Formula 1 specifications be eligible for Championship points, although Formula Libre cars also competed in some events until 1963. The series was contested on circuits in South Africa and Southern Rhodesia (today’s Zimbabwe) with some non-Championship races also taking place in Mozambique. In 1962, 1963, 1965, and 1967 the SA Championship also included the Grand Prix of South Africa, where the so-called ‘international drivers’ (those regularly competing in the World Championship) were excluded from the SA Championship results...unless they were SA nationals (i.e. Tony Maggs). Some of these ‘international drivers’ also competed in certain other SA Championship races and were again not eligible for points. For 1965/66, the engine capacity was increased to 3.00 liters, again in accordance with the new FIA rules. Formula A and F-5000 cars were allowed during 1968. Those were restricted to minimum weight of 1500 lbs/680 kg (versus 500 kg for F-1 cars). Later on Formula 2 cars were also included and although Formula 1 cars were still prevalent, the Championship again became Formula Libre. In order to reduce the ever increasing costs, the series changed to the 1.60 liter Formula Atlantic cars for 1976. Beginning in 1980 the Championship became the first major series to require use of the Wankel rotary engine, and continued unchanged until 1986. In 1962, the former Lotus employee Pieter de Klerk entered the series in his own car and immediately became a factor in the Championship, although he had never raced before. The series was dominated by relatively few team owners who could afford the best equipment and sufficient tyre supply. Two most prominent personalities were John Love, the man who led and nearly won the 1967 World Championship South African Grand Prix, and later Dave Charlton, both winning six titles. The Formula Atlantic era was dominated primarily by Ian Scheckter, who also won six titles. The South African Championship claims the appearance of the first Formula 1 car fully-liveried in sponsorship, when John Love's Brabham and Sam Tingle’s LDS were revealed in the orange-brown-gold of the Gunston cigarette brand (affiliate of Winston Tobacco) at the 1967 Rhodesian Grand Prix, and again at the World Championship South African Grand Prix in January 1968. If an ‘international driver’ achieved a pole position, fastest race lap, or high race result, the fastest qualifier and highest race finisher from among the ‘local drivers’ eligible to compete in the SA Championship were credited, as noted in the tables below, with their overall position specified in (). Počínaje rokem 1968 byly uznány i vozy Formule A a F-5000, i když s omezením minimální váhy 1500 liber (680 kg), zatím co vozy Formule 1 podléhaly minimální váze 500 kg. ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.

To put the T3 in context, its T2 predecessor suered a very poor ending to the 1977 season, failing to get the necessary warmth into its cross ply Goodyear tyres. In fact, brand new Ferrari driver, Giles Villeneuve, recalled the T2 feeling ‘unbelievably bad’ as he slipped and slided his example around Mosport during the Canadian Grand Prix that year. Ferrari designer, Mauro Forghieri spent much of 1977 creating a brand new chassis design in which the at-12 engine would continue into its ninth year of competition. Given the problems with the Goodyears, the new chassis was conceived around the dened characteristics of the Michelin radials. Other notable dierences between the T2 and the T3 were the completely new front suspension design and notably dierent upper body aero, which – in stark contrast to the T2 – sported a square-cut, predominantly at body top and engine cover, maximizing the air ow both over and under the centre pillar rear wing. Although not ready to be debuted until the third round of the championship at Kyalami in South Africa on 4th March, the T3 showed promising form during pre testing for the race.

In addition to the interviews, I am also led to believe we are providing one or two tracks etc. for the general public to have a go on and also as a means to promote the Club further, consequently as per previous years we are looking for a small and dedicated team of members to assist the Committee over the two days. So we are asking for any members who can spare a couple of hours to get in touch (email me please or see me at the Orpington swapmeet) and volunteer to help your Club, there may be a little something in it on the day and you can also get to purchase an event T-shirt from us, a very limited memento of the event! Finally, as previous years we have booked a nice little hotel near the event so those that wish to assist or who are just attending can join us for the Saturday evening (Friday and Sunday night are also available).

  • GP DE PAU HISTORIQUE (25/26 MAI) L’Année Des Retours

  • South African Motorsport - a Business Perspective of The
SOUTH AFRICAN MOTORSPORT - A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE OF THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY BY: GARETH JOYCE (STUDENT NUMBER: 9704663) RESEARCH THESIS PRESENTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE. REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF COMMERCE IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT IN THE FACULTY OF ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCE OF THE RAND AFRIKAANS UNIVERSITY STUDY LEADER: PROF. S. KRUGER OCTOBER 1999 Key Value Drivers of Track Motorsport in South Africa OPSOMMING TITEL: "SOUTH AFRICAN MOTORSPORT - A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE OF THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY" rormule Een motorsport is vir bale entoesiaste die hoogtepunt van motorsport.
