Its primary aim is to facilitate the teaching of English as the second language to speakers of Serbo-Croatian. The results should also have relevance for the teaching of Serbo-Croatian to English speakers. It is further hoped that these results will afford new insight Into the linguistic structures of the two languages and will constitute a contribution to contrastivelinguistics. The Project is directed by Rudolf Filipovid, Professor of English and Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Za. greb, Yugoslavia, and coordinated by the Center for Applied Linguistics, Washington, D.C., U.S.A., represented byWilliam Nemser, Director of the Center's Foreign Language Program. INTRODUCTION 1.1.Compounding as a word-formation device is significantly less frequent in Serbo-Croat than in English. This is only natural in view of the positional function in Serbo-Croat syntax being nowherenear as important as its English counterpart (owing to the inflexional nature of Serbo-Croat). 1.2. Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Sven Grawunder Tag der mündlichen Prüfung: 01.11.2018 ABSTRACT Jevgenij Zintchenko Jurlina: The production of lexical tone in Croatian (Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Henning Reetz and Prof. Dr. Sven Grawunder) This dissertation is an investigation of pitch accent, or lexical tone, in standard Croatian. The first chapter presents an in-depth overview of the history of the Croatian language, its relationship to Serbo-Croatian, its dialect groups and pronunciation variants, and general phonology. The second chapter explains the difference between various types of prosodic prominence and describes systems of pitch accent in various languages from different parts of the world: Yucatec Maya, Lithuanian and Limburgian. Following is a detailed account of the history of tone in Serbo-Croatian and Croatian, the specifics of its tonal system, intonational phonology and finally, a review of the most prominent phonetic investigations of tone in that language. The focal point of this dissertation is a production experiment, in which ten native speakers of Croatian from the region of Slavonia were recorded. The material recorded included a diverse selection of monosyllabic, bisyllabic, trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic words, containing all four accents of standard Croatian: short falling, long falling, short rising and long rising. Each target word was spoken in initial, medial and final positions of natural Croatian sentences.

In Bosnia-Hercegovina more than a million people are said to be affected by the torrential rains. Principle roads are blocked by landslides, isolating important parts of the country, according to Caritas Bosnia-Herzegovina’s situation reports. In Tuzla canton alone 147 landslides have been reported. Croatia will be under a separate report today. Currently a team of 20 volunteers supporting including support from our partner Translators Without Borders. The Humanity Road Urgent Needs team is fielding pleas for assistance at Smederevska Palanka Hospital. The Agriculture Ministry has appealed for chlorine bleach, quicklime and disinfectants to stem the risk of disease. Waters have receded in some areas revealing rotting animal carcasses & waste. Impacted Highlights - The town of Obrenovac is closed. Serbs have been urged not to consume food and crops from the affected areas. http://bit.ly/1jbdaQO - The town of Odzak needs volunteers, food, tools, medicines, cleaning supplies, mosquito repellant, and help to remove dead animals. A lot of aid is bypassing them for larger towns. - Villages in Zenica-Doboj Canton also need help. - Šerića is isolated from the rest of the world. - Roads are difficult, and communications with many areas has been limited. - About 11,000 people have been evacuated from Gunja, Strošinaca, Racinovac, Rajeva Sela, and Posavski Podgajaca.

Media in more than 150 countries wrote about the educational publication of the Institute of National Remembrance. Within couple of days the information about “The Queue” appeared on several dozen thousands internet websites, radio stations and in press. Such global information services as BBC, CNN, Fox News and Associated Press paid attention to it.
